“We are Ambassadors of Morning; an ever-changing gathering made up of friends from all different walks of life, making music as we cross paths.”
We were in France, South America, West Africa, the Mediterranean. We were documenting in Costa Rica. We were jamming alongside The Roots. We were performing at peace rallies. We were developing a passion for exploring the world and all its cultures. We’ve met some amazingly talented and wonderfully different people along the way who’ve opened our minds to new ideas. We’ve been built and fueled by Love, travel, culture and the desire to blend styles with artists from all over the world to create a global sound.
We are Global Citizens. We are travelers and philosophers. Astronauts and artists (okay, maybe we're not astronauts). Letter sending, genre-blending geniuses of sound. We are people with all different influences and backgrounds, playing all kinds of instruments, pulling from all different genres to create one cohesive and epic work of art. We’re always open to new ideas and voices so if you believe in our mission and love music as much as we do, get involved HERE!
We are planning our fifth project and it is becoming the most mature, well rounded, and diverse collection of pieces we’ve brought together thus far. We are writing, jamming, and experimenting (messing around with a ton of instruments!). Just recently, friend and incredibly talented drummer, Jon Laine and Leon Mobley came down to our very own Sweet Spot Studio, and threw down some (killer) drums for a couple songs we’ve been working on. We are reaching out to all corners and putting together the musicians that will become Ambassadors of Morning for this album. We are incredibly excited for the opportunities, connections and possibilities that we have today and hopefully, by tomorrow, we’ll have something truly universal and globally collaborative with a universal and timeless sound.
We are musicians, artists, engineers, drummers, flautists, singers, guitarists, sittarists… We are composers, writers, idea-igniters, kickstarters, and storytellers, all of different paths, roots, experience and voices but of a common desire to connect the world through music. We are… THE PEOPLE
Among all the things we need to acquire and fund to make our vision possible, the first and most important elements are our partners and guest musicians.
At the heart and always there to meet the rising sun, Samir Moussa is a lyricist, pianist, percussionist, guitarist, bassist, singer, native american flautist, (mandolinist, banjo-ist?, banjoer, nope I checked it’s banjoist. Oh also, the ukulele.) and primary songwriter for Ambassadors. He is the man with the plan and a vision for the love and togetherness that only music could naturally and universally achieve. Raised in the capital of the United States, his exposure to different cultures, views, approaches and styles fueled his desire to learn more and meet more like-minded artists and music lovers. College brought him north to Toronto, Canada, while family and friends would welcome him back in Lebanon and Colombia for the holidays and summers. So, travel was common in Samir’s life and as he picked up new experiences and passions like documenting a medicine man in Costa Rica, playing at the Om festival in Ontario, rallying for peace in San Francisco... It was there in California where he would continue to record music and befriend fellow DC-native musician, Raleigh Neal. Soon the sounds of a bigger family would bring him and his wife, Lisa, back to his hometown where Raleigh would introduce Samir to the owner of DC’s very own Sweet Spot Studio.
The mad scientist of music and without whom the album would not be possible, Nico Laget is a production genius, sound engineer, innovator, musician, philosopher, owner of Sweet Spot Studio and co-creator of the album. He is the brilliant weaver of sound, taking the songs we could only hear in our heads and manifesting them on the record. A French Citizen originally, Nico moved to and grew up in Congo before later moving to the United States where he would pursue a career in music production, helping artists realize their visions, and giving them the atmosphere and understanding to reach their fullest potentials. After meeting Samir and recording a few of his tracks, they would quickly realize their spiritual and ideological connection and begin to plan for a new project. Nico, as another songwriter alongside Samir, contributes his talents as a well-traveled producer, talented and experienced engineer, worldly composer, arranger, lyricist, flautist, saxophonist, pianist and general lover of music in all its forms.
Another intensely driven music lover and incredibly well-traveled percussionist, we are excited to introduce the talented and always-laughing Leon Mobley. After meeting on the road and chatting whenever our paths crossed, we're excited to collaborate with Leon’s worldly experience and (african) culture-fueled style. Leon grew up studying under Nigerian master drummer Babatunde Olatunji, bringing African-style drumming into the mainstream with his infectious smile and genuine love and energy. He studied for ten years at a Massachusetts fine art school before moving on to travel the world and performing with a vast array of impressive artists. Bringing African-style drumming into the mainstream with his infectious smile and genuine love and energy, He’s toured with greats like Stevie Wonder, Madonna, Michael Jackson and is on the road now with amazing artists like Ben Harper, Damien Marley, and Nas. He’s performed in places ranging from Africa to Japan, even taking some time to teach as well. We are honored to have such an influential and wise figure like Leon Mobley join us this album as an Ambassador of Morning.
With a voice as soft and full as the winds carrying her between all the countries she’s called home, we look to have Lou Lou Ghelichkhani return for her second appearance as an Ambassador. Despite being born in Iran, raised in Paris, living in DC and now pursuing her music in Austin, TX, Lou Lou hardly seems foreign to us. Both of Lou Lou and Samir shared a passion for the DC music scene and grew to realize the unique and mesmerizing blend of their voices as they worked to create the vibrant and distinct vocal atmosphere in Wide Awake, Ambassadors of Morning’s 2011 album release 'Amour'. During her time in the nation’s capital, Lou Lou has found recognition and success with several different international music acts. Along with her work with Ambassadors, she’s been a part of several impactful and powerful projects including 'Thievery Corporation', 'Sharpsword', and 'Bone, Fur and Feathers'. In her career, she’s seen major festival stages, Grammy nominations, and has even sold out five back-to-back shows at one of DC’s most live and popular venues, the infamous 9:30 Club. Upon getting to know Lou Lou and hearing about her many experiences with benefit concerts and hunger awareness missions, we can see that she understands the power and potential of music to both speak for society and influence it as well. We are excited to have such a powerful woman, musician and friend with us on our journey.
Not last and certainly not least, we are proud to collaborate with the well-traveled, versatile and powerfully energetic percussionist, Jon Laine. He is ahead of the game but knows how to ride behind the beat. John holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music and was recently recognized and awarded by Downbeat Magazine for his solo instrumental and drumming work. Born and raised in the DC area, Jon experienced culture and connection through the abundance and variety of globally influenced musicians he found himself working and touring with. He has performed on the road with Aretha Franklin, Kenny G, Erykah Badu and Common to name a few. With no intention of slowing down now, Jon is currently traveling with fellow DC-native Oddisee & Good Company, selling out shows from the UK to Germany. We've already made a personal investment to engage John's talents and skills to our vision. We can’t wait to hear how his drums will cut through in the final tracks after our friends come in and lay down their ideas and styles. And, since we’re always looking for new friends, we hope we’ll hear from you too. Money talks but we also wanna hear you sing!
Between all of us, we have traveled to the far corners of the world, enjoyed our own villages, and found inspiration in so many music cultures and cultured musicians including here at home! And yet, this alone is not enough to fuel our global vision for what we have in mind for tomorrow.
Bringing our vision to life will require a sizable investment, $5,000 to be exact. These resources will help us lay the foundation of our musical dream house.
