About this project
Who We Are:
We are two students living in San Jose, California. We hope to embark on a once in a lifetime film-making trip from the source of the Mississippi River and kayak all the way to southern Louisiana where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Game Plan:
We will be flying from SFO to Minneapolis. Upon arrival, we will pick up our gear and head about 4 hours north to the source of the Mississippi River, Lake Itasca. Our daily travel distance and rest points are already predetermined and mapped out for the most part. Weather and stamina may alter those plans slightly but we will keep to our daily goals as best as possible.
We will be camping along the river banks and possibly have to fight bears in hand to hand combat. Michael will be filming and I will be keeping a detailed journal blog of all our encounters. The trip will take approximately 2 months and will allow us to showcase the beauties of the river, as well as give an intimate portrait of some of its inhabitants. The final product will be worked on and edited by Bay Area film students. Barring any unforeseen disasters, we will be able to produce and distribute a polished documentary about our adventure and hopefully not something that ended up being Deliverance 2.
Making It Happen:
Travel to Minnesota, gear for the river, and filming costs are the financial obstacles that stand before us. With your help we will be able to overcome them. We are investing a good deal of our own money into this, as well as a huge time commitment for the planning, execution, and refinement of this project. This is a dream of ours to be able to make this documentary and we promise to put every every fiber of ourselves into it. Making an entertaining, educational, and inspirational film is our mission, and being able to share it with as many people as possible is paramount. Please help us make this a reality!
Risks and challenges
Some of the risks include: Not being able to find any students with interest in the project or without time to edit the footage, but we've already been in touch with a few who are interested. We're hoping to get near-professional quality editing for the project, but since we will be using recently graduated film students, it may not turn out as perfectly as we're hoping it will. Something unforeseen may happen on the trip, such as serious injuries or illness, that cause us to end early, in which case we will still plan on creating the video up until the point we reached. If only one person is injured or sick, we may try to finish the rest solo, but that would be a last resort as the danger involved is much greater.
Death is another thing that comes to mind: bears in the north, gators down south, and the normal dangers associated with navigating a river for an extended amount of time. We both promise not to die. However, if such a case arises, we hope someone can make a story about it and be able to deliver to you in an entertaining way to make up for our failure.
As far as the post-production goes, we anticipate having the film ready to go in November at the latest. If that changes, we will be on top of things and communicate every bit of information we have.
We both have the drive and tenacity to see this project through no matter what problems we encounter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
