Katinka's ArtBook (Title is Top Secret until release) is works of art, within a work of art. For many years people have recommended I create a childrens book, with wide eyed innocent doll like characters, all happy and sweet; for some reason that never seemed as appealing to me as it seemed to others. This is not that book.
Leonardo Di Vinci found the most beautiful faces to be those with symetry. I do not. I love the imbalance of features that arrest the eyes. I think large ears, big cheeks, a full or crooked nose, these are the things that can make a face unique, and what makes use unique is where true beauty lies. In the last couple of years I have been emphasising these things in my portrait paintings. I feel their personalities emerge as I paint them. I call the series Portraits of Imaginary Friends. They will be the people the book will be about. The book will be just a small peek into their personalities, hopefully with a bit of my dark satirical humor, something to sit on your coffee table to confuse who ever picks it up, until they get two or three pages in and start giggling, and then get a few more pages in and can't put it down because they have been sucked into the genius of my work. (evil laugh here)
I am doing this project not just to intoduce my friends, however imaginary to the world, but also to remind people that beauty is not in perfection but in the imperfections. There is delight in the insymetrical. The book will also touch, if in a humorous way, the basic human need we all have for companionship.
You might find that some of my imaginary friends seem like people you have met, or had dreams about at least, (or a nightmare maybe). I think the things that make someone a little odd may also be the exact something that reminds them of someone you know well. Maybe even yourself. Two things we all have in common is we are each unique and we all have a need to connect; both these themes will run through the book.
This book will be in a softcover formate similar to a graphic novel or a very nice magazine. The goal amount will cover making (and shipping) 50 books.
Risks and challenges
I have probably two paintings to complete, to have the full body or art for this book. I imagine I will have them both finished before the Kickstarter goal is met.
I am making the creation of this book my full time job, although I will continue to teach parttime while working on it. I will be putting the energy out there that it will get funded.
I have given myself a little extra time than I actually expect it will take me to finish the book, because I never seem to know what challenges will get thrown at me by my unpredictable health, but that justs means with a little luck you might get your books a bit earlier.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
