In Search of a New Position
Everyone who sits for any period of time is aware of the discomfort from sitting in one position for too long. We're talking about the pain in the low back, neck, and butt, as well as the stiffness as you attempt to stand up and walk away.
The evolution of ergonomic chairs over the past 20 years has offered seating that is a better fit to an individual. However for the most part ergonomic chairs only offer a single fixed, static position, which is well documented to be a source of poor health.
The CoreChair design is inspired by the growing frequency of people intuitively taking an exercise ball to their office to create an active sitting opportunity. We set out to make this dynamic approach to sitting more effective as an office chair and more functionally reliable and safe. For the past six years we have been developing an active seating system where the actual seat articulates about an axis immediately beneath the user's center of mass, allowing them to move their seat with them in any infinite direction. This movement can be adjusted to suit your needs from very dynamic, similar to the ball, to very firm, similar to the ergonomic chair.
There are a number of significant benefits of active sitting that are achieved through the CoreChair design. The obvious is the ability to employ the chair as you would an exercise ball, challenging your core muscles through standard exercises and enhancing your core endurance for long term sitting and other activities of daily living. A recent study conducted at the University of Waterloo, (Ontario, Canada) by Dr Jack Callaghan, PhD, concluded that the CoreChair performed as good as, and better than, the exercise ball at recruiting these core muscles. And, with a simple adjustment to the mechanism, the CoreChair becomes an ergonomic office chair, offering all of the same support and functionality.
Additional benefits of the CoreChair include:
• The ability to constantly mobilize the joints of the hips, pelvis and spine as you change your position throughout the day, a counter measure to the imbalance of soft tissue surrounding these joints, where one side becomes stretched and the other shortens in a normal fixed static seating experience

About the CoreChair Design
The movement of the mechanism is assisted with an dampening system that closely resembles hydraulics and results in a very smooth ride.
This patented mechanism has an adjustment feature that is engaged by a simple lever that transforms from a very mobile support for optimal core stimulation, to a stable support complimenting your natural tendencies to move while reducing the strain on your spine.
To compliment the dynamic feature, the CoreChair has a sculpted seat to encourage an optimal sitting support and a back support that hugs the top of the back of your pelvis. In harmony, these supports encourage an upright vertical pelvis that prevents slouching and balances the ascending spine to provide additional comfort in the upper back and neck.
Where We Are
The CoreChair has evolved over the past 6 years with design, engineering, research studies and field trials. Our production prototype has undergone extensive testing, exceeding the 300,000 cycles required for industry standards and completing an impressive 1,000,000 cycles-- and still ticking! It was important for the CoreChair to not only meet, but exceed industry standards and user safety and reliability.
We have engaged the input of a diverse scope of allied health professionals including physical therapists, chiropractors, personal trainers, pilates instructors, massage therapists, ergonomists and most importantly, people like you and I who sit for long periods of time.
The CoreChair's active seating mechanism is patented in Canada and has patents pending in 36 other countries. We have invested in excess of $800,000 to date. Product design has been finalized and we have tooling and manufacturing quotes in hand from reliable partners. We are fortunate to be working with Inertia Engineering and Design Ltd., a Toronto based engineering firm known for their progressive approach to innovative designs.
Next Steps: Manufacturing Process
With accelerated life cycle testing complete, engineering specifications and all 2D and 3D drawings updated and a final production prototype fabricated, CoreChair is now ready to proceed to design and fabrication of tooling. All prototypes have been fabricated by way of a CNC machining process using blocks of materials that will be used in production. We have received quotations from potential suppliers for the tooling, which is the moulds to manufacture the parts and the actual parts themselves. The tool makers use the 3D drawings to machine the negative of the parts in fine detail, taking into account the consistency of material and the process to both inject the appropriate liquified material and how to remove the final part. Up to 6 trials are common to perfect the tool and create samples that are tested for fit, function, strength and aesthetics.
The process takes approximately 16 weeks. During this time, samples are checked over and revisions to the tool are detailed. Once the pars are perfected, the tool is fabricated from a very large block of steel. It goes through a process called Nitrate Surface Hardening, which ensures long term durability of the tool. Due to the precision requirements of the entire CoreChair mechanism, the candidate manufacturers are required to be highly skilled in this as well as an existing producer of very high standards specifically in the office chair sector.
With a six year investment in the development of this chair, our team is very focused on the success based on highest quality standards to compliment the functional benefits. When the manufacturer produces the parts, each par undergoes a quality control inspection to confirm specifications have been achieved. The parts then go through incremental assembly, where they are each tested for fit and function. Once they have passed this stage, they will be packaged ready for shipment.
CoreChair has developed relationships with partners who will facilitate fulfillment of orders in Europe, the USA and Canada. These partners will carry inventory of standard product and have an ability to alter the specifications of various components and then ship to the customer. The manufacturer will produce the chairs and send them to these partners who will manage the inventory and order fulfillment.
CoreChair will introduce the chair initially through direct sales and place a focus on developing a network of dealers and distributors, who in turn will make the chair available to institutions and individuals. The list of interested dealers is growing daily in parallel with the interest from individuals seeking an optimal sitting experience. The initial warranty of the chair will be five years which has been supported by the success of the cycle testing completed. The 1,000,000 cycles compares to an individual moving on the chair to full range at the highest resistance every 75 seconds over an eight hour day, five days a week, for 10 years. This chair is built to keep you moving for a long time!
Funding arising from the Kickstarter project will contribute to fund tooling and manufacturing and purchase initial inventory in order for the CoreChair to be available in January of 2014. We are seeking funding of $50,000 to complete these next steps and deliver you a product that will allow you to enjoy your sitting experience. Risks and challenges
We have done extensive business planning, mapping out financials and timelines. We have shareholders and other investors who have committed to funding our initial inventory, warehousing, and freight to bring the first production of CoreChairs to us so we can get them to the end users. Once we press the button to order our tools for production, our biggest setbacks could come in terms of delayed timelines. We have over 100 people who have pre-ordered the CoreChair and have been waiting patiently for production.
As our design and engineering is completed, our production prototype has been tested and approved, and we have selected vendors for tooling, manufacturing, and distribution, we truly believe time is our biggest hurdle.
We are introducing a whole new concept in sitting. As such, the initial launch will be reliant on early adopters to spread the word, as well as progressive-thinking business people to recognize the value in this business opportunity.
