About

The BLADRNR Story

One day about a year ago I was trying to remove a transparent Sticker from inside of the front Windshield of my car using one of the typical hand held single edge Razor Blade Scrapers. As I was pushing the Scraper it suddenly slipped and I sliced the inside Windshield Molding.  I thought to myself wouldn't it be nice to have a small, powered scraping tool that would allow you to remove that Sticker in a precise controlled manner.  This is when I came up with the idea for the BLADRNR Power Scraper.  After 6 design iterations and 3 prototypes I have come up with a final working prototype and a final production design.

BLADRNR Description

The BLADRNR is a small compact hand tool approximately the same size as a Dremel. The BLADRNR utilizes a unique mechanism that translates rotary motion from an small electric motor into a reciprocating linear motion very efficiently.  On the end of a reciprocating shaft is a pivoting holder that holds and secures a standard single edge Razor Blade. The Blade reciprocates back and forth 1/64" at a cyclic rate of 91 cycles per second.  Since the Blade holder is allowed to pivot, the Razor Blade will always maintain full contact with the working surface regardless of what position the BLADRNR Handle is in. The electric Motor is a small permanent Magnet type operating on 12 volts DC of Battery Power.  The Battery pack is a rechargeable 12 volt Nickel Metal Hydride type.  An integral charging receptacle on the end of the unit will accept the supplied 120VAC/12VDC wall Charger.  Patent Pending.

Typical Uses are removing Paint, Tape, Calcium buildup, Labels, hardened Glue, etc from smooth surfaces such as Glass, Tile, Stone, metal, Stone, Ceramic, electric Stove burner surfaces and even kitchen counter tops. It could also be used by people that apply Car Window Tint Film to precisely trim away the excess Film.

The BLADRNR is not only designed to remove substances in a precise manner it is also very powerful.  It not only works as a precision Tool but it can perform the task very quickly. After a thorough testing regimen, the BLADRNR by far exceeded all performance goals.  This Tool just flat out works!

Evolution of the Design

Bladrnr design #1 - This design utilized a bearing on a crank shaft to generate a reciprocating motion.

Bladrnr design #2 - This design is similar to design #1 with the exception of a gear reduction drive for increased torque.

Bladrnr design #3 - This design utilized a Face Cam driven by a spherical follower. It used a 6 volt Motor & Battery pack. This design proved that the Face Cam concept was the way to go but it lacked the power I was looking for.

The Team

  • Tony Balsillie - Tony is the inventor and developer of the BLADRNR.
  • Chris Balsillie - Chris is a brilliant Mechanical Engineer who's design & engineering input to this product has been invaluable.
  • Kim Balsillie - Kim's contribution to this product from a stylistic standpoint has been very much appreciated.
  • Nicholas Butler - Nicholas will be a key part of the business aspects when we ultimately reach production status.
  • Kristi Balsillie - Kristi will be in charge of marketing the BLADRNR to reach future production goals.

Where is Your Money Going?

I have funded the prototype so far with my own savings combined with many, many hours at the Computer developing the design and building 3 prototypes.  The single largest expense are the Injection Molds for all the Plastic parts. Another major expense are the manufacturing costs for the all the molded and machined parts, purchased component procurement, assembly and packaging.  A portion of the component parts will be manufactured overseas with the final assembly completed in the U.S.A.

Timeline

  • Kickstarter funding - March through  April 2014
  • Injection Mold manufacture completion - end of May 2014
  • Raw material procurement - end of May 2014
  • Purchase component & hardware procurement - end of May 2014
  • Molded plastic parts completion - end of June 2014
  • Machined parts completion - end of June 2014
  • Assembly - July 2014
  • Package and prepare for shipping - end of July 2014
  • Ship 1st 500 BLADRNR'S to backers - August 2014
  • Ship 2nd lot of 1000 BLADRNR"S to backers - September 2014

Risks and challenges

We are there and ready to go. The prototypes are built and fully durability tested. All manufacturing drawings and solid models are complete. The component part suppliers have been chosen as well as the manufacturers. Our funding goal was calculated to meet our suppliers and manufacturers minimum quantity requirements. As in any industry, the major risk is for our manufacturers and suppliers to meet their promised deliveries. We will have workarounds in place and work our Tails off in the event of a any slip. Our final step is to get your support to make this happen. Make sure that you check the periodic updates on our project so we can be as transparent as possible to our backers.
