Skyline Chess is a company founded by two London based architects, Chris and Ian. We take iconic architecture from around the world and reimagine it as pieces on a chessboard, allowing you to play with your favourite cities and pit them against each other.
The concept was first conceived when we shared a flat together and would play chess in the evenings. The idea grew out of a conversation about whether we could replace the classic pieces with our favourite buildings. This led us to design and develop our first set, based on the skyline of our hometown, London.
Following the success of the London edition, we are delighted to present the next skyline in our range - New York City.
Having visited this city many times, its inspirational and iconic high-rise architecture made it the perfect choice for us to bring to the chessboard.
We've chosen a range of buildings from across the city, some of which capture the essence of the early 1900's construction boom and the growth of skyscraper architecture, through to their more contemporary counterparts, along with some of the city's most recognisable silhouettes.
We gave careful consideration to selecting each piece on the board, to ensure that it both visually reflected the appropriate chess piece and also reflected the architectural status and scale of that building in the city.
King - One World Trade Tower
Queen - Empire State Building
Bishop - Chrysler Building
Knight - Flatiron Building
Rook - Guggenheim Museum
- Pawn - Brownstone House
After we made these initial choices, we modelled and then 3D printed our prototype set, to make sure the scale and proportions were suitable for play. From there, we will develop the pieces further to ensure they can be injection moulded - including the design of a cavity inside each piece for a metal weight core to be inserted, to ensure a pleasing weight on the chess board.
We are funding on Kickstarter to allow us to complete our first production run of sets and packaging - this will allow us to produce the full 32 piece chess set, complete with presentation box and folding board. Each set contains an information sheet with details on each building and how to set up the board.
We have a range of different rewards for our Kickstarter backers to help us reach our target.
We would like to thank all of our Kickstarter backers for the opportunity to help us realise our vision.

Risks and challenges
We learnt a huge amount through the experience of launching the London edition of Skyline Chess and it took us a lot of time to find the right team to work with.
Through extensive prototyping and sampling we are able to ensure that each piece has the quality and detail that meets our high standards, and each set will be quality control checked to make sure it is of the highest possible standard.
As with any first production run, there might be delays due to unforeseen circumstances. We've taken a conservative approach in setting our timeline, and will aim to ship products out sooner if we can.
