About this project
Tact-Tiles are highly portable, rigid, thick plastic, wet and dry-erase, gaming tiles. No more erasing the mat and starting over when the PCs run off the edge! And no more fussing with a rolled up mat!
The new run of Tact-Tiles are 100% compatible with the original Tact-Tiles from BC Products.
If you are a gamer who uses miniatures, or just in need of a good portable dry-erase and wet erase solution, Tact-Tiles will provide you with the best solution for a play surface. But don’t take our word for it. You can see what others have said about the original run of Tact-Tiles:
RA Salvatore - "Read the quotes from game industry giants and believe them. I used tact-tiles for years and will again now that they're back in production (with better production values)."
Monte Cook - These really are wonderful game aids.
Sean K Reynolds - Tact-Tiles — as in, “Holy crap, they’re making Tact-Tiles again!” — is a wet/dry erase tile system for gaming maps, and they’re amazing.
Ten years ago, Tact-Tiles were impossible to find and incredibly desired by GMs. Now is your chance! - @nperkins
Tact-Tiles are great. I have some from the original run. If you missed out, now is your chance! - @JediSoth
SWEET MOTHER OF ODIN. Tact-Tiles are back(!) - @DungeonBastard
We are ready to go into production right now! By altering the material and print processes, we are once again able to produce Tact-Tiles of the same design and quality as the originals. And we're bringing them back to the market with your help, through Kickstarter.
To be perfectly frank, these aren't some cheap knock-offs. These are the real deal, tweaked to improve the manufacturing processes to insure we can bring them to you at an affordable price.
Each tile measures 10.5"x10.5"x.125", and weighs about 9 oz. And unlike the original Tact-Tiles, the new design is both dry and wet erase.
This is a pic of the first completed sample that we feel is representative of the manufacturing run.
We expect to go into production within two months of completion of the Kickstarter campaign. This is the lead time required by the injection molding supplier to get the tiles into their production schedule after we place our order. Of course, we will do what we can to speed this process along.
Once the tiles are molded, they have to be printed. Based on current projections, we can expect to print and ship about 3,000 tiles a week.
Backers of the expedited tiers can expect their sets to be among the first shipped. Others will be shipped according to the sets they ordered, with the larger sets being shipped first.
In the past few years, shipping costs have risen dramatically, especially for international shipments. We've selected the cheapest possible shipping methods, but the cost is still considerable. We apologize, but unfortunately this is beyond our control.
$100,000 - Every set of tiles will come with a cardboard storage box. We plan for this box to include a handle for easy transportation, and have enough room for markers as well.
$120,000 - We will offer a premium carrying case as an add-on.
$200,000 - We will begin investigating the possibility of doing hex tiles. This would require a new mold, and we need to first determine demand. If you would be interested in purchasing hex tiles, please let us know.
You must first back a regular tier containing 6 or more tiles before adding Add-Ons.
To select an Add-On, simply increase your pledge total by the amount listed below. At the end of the campaign, all backers will receive a survey. On the survey, you will be asked your shipping address and which Add-Ons you selected. Please make sure you double check your math when selecting Add-Ons and inputing your pledge amount!
Additional 12 Tile Deluxe (US Only) - Add an additional $106 to your order. This includes shipping costs.
Additional 12 Tile Deluxe (International) - Add an additional $116 to your order. This includes shipping costs.
2 Tile Booster Pack (US Only) – Add an additional $18 to your pledge to add 2 more Tiles. This includes shipping costs.
2 Tile Booster Pack (International) – Add an additional $21 to your pledge to add 2 more Tiles. This includes shipping costs.
4 Tile Booster Pack (US Only) – Add an additional $36 to your pledge to add 4 more Tiles. This includes shipping costs.
4 Tile Booster Pack (International) – Add an additional $42 to your pledge to add 4 more Tiles. This includes shipping costs.
Blank Tile Booster Pack (US Only) - Add $15 to your pledge to add 2 blank Tact-Tiles to your order. Blank Tact-Tiles do not have a grid printed on them, and are great for taking notes or expanding one of the blank tile tiers. This includes shipping costs.
Blank Tile Booster Pack (International) - Add $18 to your pledge to add 2 blank Tact-Tiles to your order. This includes shipping costs.
Again, you must first back a regular tier containing 6 or more tiles before adding Add-Ons.
Risks and challenges
We've spent the last year working on eliminating the manufacturing risks involved in this project, and we've got a set of prototypes that we know we can reliably reproduce.
The challenge, and the expense, is in the production processes. Large volume production is far cheaper than low volume, so we have to achieve our goal to be able to produce enough tiles to bring the production costs down to reasonable levels.
Yes. The new tiles are totally compatible with the original Tact-Tiles. Just make sure you don’t use wet erase on the old tiles.
No. The back side has injection marks from the tool on it, and is not polished. That means that the markers will likely stain.
We are looking into this, but as of yet have not found a cost effective way to do clear tiles. The problem is that the high pressures involved in injection molding has a tendency to turn the clear material white.
It’s not possible to produce hex tiles in the Tact-Tile’s current shape and size. This is problematic because it requires a new mold. We spent some time looking at ways to use a hex pattern, and determined that it’s not just a matter of printing something different on the same shape/size. The same problem applies to different sized squares.
We’d need a new mold with different injection points. Another issue with this is the fact that the play surface is polished to better handle the markers. You wouldn't want to slide the tiles around on this surface because it could scratch it. Double sided tiles would, by their very nature, always be used with a polished surface down. And that's not good for the tiles.
A new mold is very expensive, as much as $20,000 or more. We don’t have the budget for it at this time. If the Kickstarter is wildly successful, this might be possible. But we’d first need to gather a sense that enough demand exists to justify the cost.
Good question, and we sympathize with your frustration. We tried our best to get the best rates we could, but unfortunately, there is only so much we can do. We aren't making a profit on shipping and handling. See here: https://plus.google.com/116244995146409669204/posts/1QfAKu2YWEh
Simply put, we’re dealing with 10 years of inflation on a petroleum-based product. Consider the price of gas, or minimum wage, a decade ago. We’re also manufacturing entirely in the US, and aren’t willing to sacrifice quality to produce a cheaper product. We tried to keep the costs down as much as possible, which included cutting our original profit margins by 25%.
We’re hoping to have prototype samples there for a few GMs to use at their game tables, but we will not be selling them in them dealer’s room. If you are running a game at GenCon or DragonCon, let me know and I’ll see about getting you a set to demo/play with.
