Originally released using a modified version of the Fate system contained in Strands of Fate and Fate Core, Nova Praxis is going to be re-released for the Savage Worlds game system.
This new core book will contain the setting information contained in the original Nova Praxis core book, expanded with new material from Machinations: the Nova Praxis GM's Guide. The Savage Worlds rules are being written by Shaintar creator and industry veteran, Sean Patrick Fannon!
The Book and PDF
Nova Praxis: Savage Worlds Edition will be released in the same digest format as the Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition. We estimate it to be roughly 250 pages, standard print. We are shooting for an August release in hopes of getting it out to everyone by GenCon.
The PDF will be a bookmarked version of the print edition. But if we hit the stretch goal (see below), we will also produce an Augmented PDF, featuring a tablet friendly layout and a number of enhancements for improved navigation. You can learn more about the A-PDF for the Fate version here. And we're striving to make sure the one for Savage Worlds is even better.
The playtest is live! One of the updated visible to backers includes a link to the playtest doc.
Nova Praxis was originally released for the Fate system. The Savage Worlds Edition will have different game mechanics of course, but here's what people have said about the original version...
“Nova Praxis has a stunningly realized and fleshed out setting. I mean this in a very good way. The worlds of the solar system, factions and organizations within the world are all well thought out and realized within the game. I think that this is a key to a game that wants to be transhumanist: you have to understand and work out the social structures of the setting. Transhumanism is an evolutionist philosophy (from my viewpoint) that tries to work out how great changes in technology and science will impact not only those sciences but society and people as well. In Nova Praxis, the Void Star Games people have certainly gotten that part right. Thought has gone into the world of their future, and how the advances have impacted it and the people who live there.“ – Christopher Helton, Dorkland
“Man, it was exactly what I was looking for!… Needless to say, if you play any kind of Fate, and want sci-fi, transhuman, or cyberpunk elements in your game, then you couldn't go wrong with Nova Praxis.” - Paul M. [5 of 5 Stars]
[Referring to the Augmented PDF] “Quite possibly the most useful and beautiful PDF ever created for gaming…” – Seth B. [5 of 5 Stars]
“I don't do a lot of reviews, but I feel compelled to do so in this case. The game I'm reviewing, Nova Praxis, a FATE-based ruleset, is just that good. And the delivery system, an enhanced PDF, is really amazing in terms of its clean aesthetic and overall usability. Color me very, very impressed.” – Edgar Johnson
“It is a very engaging game with an excellent developed setting that tackles many fundamental issues and themes inherent to the genre itself. Action, conspiracies, ethical and moral issues, social dichotomies, and much more! Basically, this roleplaying game offers us a fantastic playground to develop and create any types of memorable stories.“ – Yohann Delalande
IMPORTANT! - PLEASE READ!
If you back a tier that offers a print copy of the book, when it becomes available, you will be sent a coupon code to get the book at cost from DrivethruRPG. What does "at cost" mean? It means the coupon code will cover the cost of the book, but not printing or shipping. Void Star Studios makes no profit at this stage. This is the cost of printing and delivery paid to DrivethruRPG to get the printed book into your hands.
The book will be available in softcover and hardcover, in standard and premium color. DrivethruRPG estimates the print costs as follows:
- Softcover Premium Color - $13.30 to $16.50
- Softcover Standard Color - $7.50 to $8.80
- Hardcover Premium Color - $18.80 to $22.10
- Hardcover Standard Color - $12.60 to $14.50
Make sure you factor this in when selecting your backer tier. This is the amount you will have to pay in addition to your backer tier and shipping costs.
Shipping costs vary by location. DrivethruRPG ships internationally, and estimated shipping costs can be found here.
To clarify... After the Kickstarter has ended and the book has been released, you will be issued a coupon code that discounts the price of the print version such that you only pay for the print and shipping costs. How much you must pay at that time depends on the type of print job you select (as shown above) and your location.
Evolved Backers: As a thank you, your name will be listed in a special "Thank You" section of the book. Also, you will get PDF copies of all the books unlocked through the stretch goals listed below as they are released. And if we raise enough to produce an Augmented PDF ($9,000), Evolved backers will get both the regular PDF and the Augmented PDF at no extra cost.
$8,000 - The Augmented PDF [DONE!] - We will develop an Augmented version of the PDF. Evolved backers will get both the regular PDF, and the Augmented PDF, at no additional cost.
$8,500 - Game Master's Screen - We will develop a Nova Praxis: Savage Worlds Edition Game Master's Screen PDF. Evolved backers will get this PDF for free.
$9,500 - Ghosts in Darkness - We will develop and release the introductory scenario, Ghosts in Darkness for Nova Praxis: Savage Worlds Edition. Evolved backers will get this PDF for free when it is released.
$10,000 - Work Hazards - We will begin developing Work Hazards, a book of alien creatures, biotechnological horrors, combat drones, terrorists, pirates and other NPCs to challenge your players with. Evolved backers will get this PDF for free when it is released. Work Hazards will be released featuring both Savage Worlds and Fate stats.
$11,000 - Nova Praxis Cards - We will develop a custom set of Nova Praxis playing cards for use in determining initiative. These cards will be available through DrivethruCards around the same time the book releases. Evolved backers will get a PDF of these cards for free.
$12,000 - Fragmentation - Mike McConnell will begin writing Fragmentation, a Nova Praxis novel. Evolved backers will get this ebook/PDF for free when it is released.
$13,000 - Galactic Gazetteer: The Sol System - We will begin development on the Galactic Gazetteer: The Sol System. This book, for both the Fate and Savage Worlds version of Nova Praxis, will feature an in-depth look at the planets in the Sol system, with particular emphasis on Earth. Evolved backers will get this PDF for free when it is released.
$16,000 - The Vantage Strain - We will begin developing The Vantage Strain a massive pre-written scenario for both Savage Worlds and Fate versions of Nova Praxis. Evolved backers will get this PDF for free when it is released.
$18,000 - Designer Raise! - Contributing writers get a 10% pay raise! RPG writers are woefully under paid, and this lets us better support those who worked hard to bring you this book.
$20,000 - Digital Initiative - If we come this far, we're going to dive into a new digital initiative. We'll start with character creation apps for the web, Android and iOS phones and tablets; and expand from there with additional digital tools for both Savage Worlds and Fate versions of Nova Praxis.
Risks and challenges
We've already ran one successful Kickstarter, and this one is very similar. But even though our first one was a success, we still had a few challenges. This time we have the benefit of experience, and know more about the potential pitfalls we might fall into.
The biggest pitfall last time was in correctly estimating international shipping costs, an issue we will be avoiding entirely this time.
The biggest challenges are getting the product put together. This will be our 4th book of this sort, so we are well aware of what it takes to get the writing, editing, art and layout done. Publishing will be handled through DrivethruRPG, a company we have a great relationship, and much experience, with.
We also have Sean Patrick Fannon onboard this time, and he also has experience with running a successful Kickstarter.
We are keeping it simple and to the point with this campaign, being careful to not over-promise or under-deliver.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
