About

Hello Kickstarter!

First, let us introduce ourselves. We are a team of two people: My partner, Damian, is working as a technician, so he really knows how to work with metal and CNC machines of any kind. I myself am a student of physics named Claudio. We met while attending a course to teach our profession – in Switzerland it is normal but not mandatory to work for a company while attending school for one or two days a week for three to four years. The result of this is a government-approved certificate to verify our skills at our chosen profession. Therefore both, my teammate and myself, are trained professionals when it comes to working with metal as well as modern machinery.

Now what could we use our skills for? Obviously we want to use them to make something awesome!

The idea

So we started thinking and came up with some nice ideas. We quickly realised that we should make some high quality products that are some kind of art but still have a purpose. After long hours of thinking we came up with a plan: We will make the most awesome dice ever.

Development of the idea

We found that some people also started a campaign on this site with dice, but none of them fulfilled our expectations on the most epic dice ever: Lots of them were poorly manufactured or not round enough.

What do we mean by “not round enough”, a die should be cubical, shouldn't it? Dice should roll, so the throw cannot be manipulated. Therefore the edges should be as round as possible. So we used our maths and physics skills to come up with a formula:

Let “a” be the length of the dice and “b” the value of roundness you want the edges to have in the centre of the dice.

Use some maths and you get: Diameter d = root(a^2 + a^2) – 2b

Rearrange this and we get our final formula: d = root(2a^2) – 2b

Now we use our numbers and get a final diameter of 17.25mm

With these extra steps in planning our product we assured maximum randomness when rolling our dice.

Even more planning

Now we had a plan: We knew how our dice will be looking like when it comes to shape, so we started thinking about the manufacturing process. As you know by now we are both trained professionals and highly motivated to not just make a dice, but a piece of art. We quickly realised that we need a turning machine that is also capable of milling to cater to our high standards.

The next step was searching for a manufacturer. After some time of scrolling through the top manufacturers of Switzerland we found a small company with a perfect machine. We contacted said company and made a good deal.

The dice will be turned/milled out of a massive piece of stainless steel on a Nakamura Tome SC250MRY.

We set some very strict standards when it comes to producing our dice (for example the circular milling shape made with a milling tool with a 3mm diameter on the faces of the dice).

Getting the prototypes

Now that we are holding the first prototype in our hands, we can only say that we are stunned: The dice look awesome! This is the type of small object you have on your desk to play around with when thinking about your next important decision. We assure you, that not only you will be impressed by those dice every time you look at them, but also your colleagues, friends and family who will undoubtedly have a look at them when they are talking to you when you are on your desk.

FAQ

How do we continue?

Now that we are on Kickstarter, we will do everything to stay in contact with you as much as we can and if we are successful with reaching our goal we will instantly start production: We are confident that everyone will get their dice as soon as possible.

Why do we need such a huge amount of money?

It is very difficult and expensive to create a company in Switzerland, therefore we need to set the goal very high – we apologise for that!

Why are the dice so expensive?

As you well know we set to ourselves and to our suppliers only the highest of standards, so production is not cheap. It needs a lot of time to mill and turn one of our dice and we produce on a top-notch machine. The final product is definitely worth it.

How can you help us?

You can not only support us with buying our product, you can also share our idea with your friends via social media. We are very grateful if you do!

Risks and challenges

There are not very much risks you are taking when supporting us: We already have a producer and we know what costs will occur while producing and delivering our product.

The only thing we cannot guarantee is the delivery date. Even dough we planned everything and set ourselves a very realistic goal, it would be possible that production takes longer than expected. However, we think the chance of that happening is very small.

Please note that we will not take any responsibility for damage or harm caused by or with one or more of our dice. Do not eat or give the dice to someone who could eat them! (We cannot believe we actually have to say this)
