My name is Jillian Morris and I am the founder of Sharks4Kids, Inc. We are an education non-profit with the main goal of creating the next generation of shark advocates through education, outreach and adventure. We offer a diverse range of education materials and experiences for both students and teachers. Our website has free downloadable curriculum, activities, games and videos to help educators and students dive into the world of sharks.
Our outreach programs include classroom visits, shark snorkel/dives and student shark tagging trips/camps. Our Skype lessons have also been an integral part of the reach we have, allowing us to connect with over 30, 000 students in 31 countries and 44 US States (we’ve added another since the video was recorded) in just under 2 years. We are a very small organization, but we are all incredibly passionate about saving sharks and will continue to spread shark education to as many kids as possible around the globe.
Our FIN tastic Video Series provides a glimpse into the life of a specific species of shark along with activities to accompany the video. We want kids to get excited about these amazing animals and realize they are not man-eating monsters, but are actually incredibly important for the health of the oceans. We hope our materials and programs will inspire and empower kids to speak up and make a difference. 100 million sharks are killed each year, but we can all do something, no matter how young or old we are.
Norman the nurse shark was the second character we created as part of our shark crew and we want to bring his story to life in the form of a book. Nurse sharks are often over looked because they do not demand the same attention as white sharks or tiger sharks, but our whole team has a special place in our hearts for them, so we decided to select Norman for our first story. Norman will travel on an exciting adventure throughout the Bahamas in search of a place to call his home. Along the way he will meet some interesting characters, one of which you could select by supporting the project, and teach kids about nurse shark characteristics, adaptations, habitats, shark sanctuaries and why these animals are incredibly important for oceans around the world. The story is fun, but also educational.
For me, writing a children’s book has been something I have wanted to do since high school, so I am really excited about this and it is definitely a passion project. We found an amazing artist to bring Norman to life, one who believes in the power of ocean education and our project. Norman will look slightly different than his shark crew depiction, but will still be the adorable little shark we know and love.
We decided to do a Kickstarter campaign because we literally need a kickstart to bring this project to life. Our goal is to print 1100 copies of the book, of which we will donate 100 to schools through the Bahamas and South Florida where we do the majority of our outreach programs. Nurse sharks are common in this area and many of the students we work with have been fortunate enough to see them. We hope the book will inspire kids to explore their own backyards and take action to protect the incredible wildlife that is found there. Proceeds from the additional books will go back into producing more books in the series, even a book featuring a shark character you can select and name!
You support will help us take our shark education goals to the next level and inspire another generation of ocean and shark advocates. Sharks are not monsters, but are majestic, charismatic and fascinating animals. Help us tell their story and help us save sharks.
Risks and challenges
We are all very passionate about bringing this book to life and will make it a reality. We believe it is an important story to tell and believe our backers will feel the same. We have an incredible support system and we’ve already been able to work with and connect with so many students. The challenges we face are getting the layout exact without all of us being in the same location. We are confident we can get this accomplished and launch a wonderful series of fun and educational books to inspire kids to make a difference and do their part to protect and conserve these amazing creatures.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
