We have built TEO, the world's very first key-less padlock system, that you can open, close, access and share with a simple touch of your smartphone. Anytime and anywhere you happen to be.

The Tech: How TEO works . . .
TEO is the first keyless padlock that you can unlock, lock, access and share with our app on your smartphone or other Bluetooth enabled device.
Hardware: Form3 Design in Vancouver, BC has designed TEO to be a rugged yet compact, spring-loaded padlock. TEO will be manufactured by Heliox Technologies in Newark, California, a proven supplier of high performance technology products.
Electronics: TEO's Bluetooth Low Energy technology is inherently secure and adheres to international standards and compliance requirements. It also has a proprietary chipset designed specifically for TEO - designed from day one to be electronically secure.
Software: We've been working on TEO for two years now and are currently working to develop a proprietary module for use in TEO. Our prototypes use standard BTLE chipsets, which provide a number of features and our production unit will feature firmware and software optimized for TEO.

We have spent significant time developing the feature set and road map for the software and verified capability. A decision was made in July 2013 to pursue an alternative BTLE chipset with features specific to TEO. This approach was selected to allow for the inclusion of specific TEO features in firmware, including energy management and serial number tracking.
The current app provides testing and limited operation, including searching and finding locks, selecting locks, locking and unlocking, timing and duration, battery strength and signal strength.

Risks and challenges
There is always a risk when producing a product that combines both electronic hardware and software. So we have done everything to reduce it to a minimum before launching TEO here on Kickstarter.
We have a lock that works and the patent is pending.
The hardware used by the current version of TEO is a proven, tested hardware. The main risks concerning hardware are thus reduced to logistics. Unplanned delays in the manufacturing process can still occur, but problems related to the hardware design of the device are very unlikely.
On the software side, we're currently working with a manufacturer to develop a proprietary module for use in TEO. Our prototypes use standard BTLE chipsets, which provide a number of features and our production unit will feature firmware and software optimized for TEO. We are confident we can do it during the next 12 months.

How long the battery lasts will depend on how much TEO is used and specifically, how often the Bluetooth module is "awake".
In sleep mode, TEO consumes very little power.
We are targeting a battery life of at least one year as the design standard. A battery "gas gauge" graphic has been built into the application so that the user is able to directly and easily monitor TEO's battery strength.
A Fob is in development to 'jump start' TEO, as well as contact a spare battery to exchange for the old one. Stay tuned for our upcoming update on the TEO Fob!
With the proprietary Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) TEO module, you will be granted with a new electronic "key".
TEO's Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) electronics are inherently secure and adhere to international standards and compliance requirements. A proprietary chipset has been designed specfically for TEO and the lock has been designed to be electronically secure.
TEO stands for: Transferable Electronic Operation.
The current TEO app has been developed for Apple iOS, however, yes! We will also develop an Android app for TEO that will follow a similar timeline as the iOS.
TEO's manufacturer, Heliox Technologies, Inc from Newark, California, has been designing and manufacturing underwater technology products for the best part of the last decade.
They have worked very closely with the U.S. military on custom product development, so as you can imagine, Heliox develops products that operate and last in the harshest of environments.
Heliox worked in close consultation with TEO's industrial design team, Form3, and contributed their experience in product development for harsh conditions to ensure that the design and manufacturability of TEO is of the very highest standard and will withstand the harshest of conditions.
Some of you great folks have been asking about TEO's dimensions:
We're working on improvements to further tamper-proof TEO, which will alter the width and potentially the height of the shackle clearance. We intend on constraining the diameter of the shackle to fit through 3/8in / 9.5mm holes.
This dimension is a common hole size for hasps and locker handle boxes.
