About

I've always had a love affair with words. Language is my art, a kind of spoken music. I also love life, this beautiful planet called earth and the cultures and people that make up our world. This summer I'll be embarking on the most exciting and difficult writing project that I have ever tried. I'll be traveling to an island country that ranks high in poverty, crime and human trafficking - the Dominican Republic. Here I'll be immersed in another culture and another language - a language that I truly love. I want to learn all that I can about life in the Dominican Republic, about the customs, language and people. Especially, I want to learn about the women. These beautiful women and girls live in a place where human trafficking is part of everyday life. Abandoned children and preteens with no other option for survival are brutally violated day after day. The Dominican Republic is the third highest country worldwide in sex trafficking. The women who live there are at very great risk.

When my church (http://firstbaptistlapeer.org/) announced that the staff was organizing a women's mission trip to the Dominican Republic, I knew right away that this was something I wanted to do. I long to touch lives, especially those of other women and girls. We'll be working with a group of ladies from Dare For More Ministries, (http://dareformore.org/women-on-mission-dominican-republic/), and reaching out to women transitioning out of prostitution and girls rescued from situations of abandonment or neglect. I'll have the privilege of worshipping on Sunday with the Dominican believers.

When I return from my brief, ten-day trip in the Dominican Republic, I'm going to set to work writing. I want to raise awareness for what is going on in countries like the Dominican. It's my plan to journal exhaustively while I'm away, recording thoughts, impressions and experiences - everything that I observe or that impacts me. Back stateside, I'll sift through my notes and start to write. I want to retain the freshness and vulnerability of those scribbles in my journal, so that the end result will be, not just facts and statistics, but like a window into my soul and into the soul of the Dominican Republic. My intent is to write an article, but I never know if it's going to turn into a book!

My ultimate goal in this mission trip and the writing project is to glorify God, who has loved me, saved me, transformed me and sent me with his message of hope to a dark world. My second great desire is to change lives. My prayer is that I will be able to do that in the DR by showing love that ignores cultural and ethnic differences and speaks straight to the heart of the women there. And in my writing project I hope to do it by exposing a need and sparking compassion, action, and gratitude for the blessings that we have here in the U.S. and other countries. I fully expect my own life to be changed through this experience as well.

So, thanks for reading and for your interest! Whether you choose to contribute or not, I hope that you will be inspired to help women at risk around the world. I hope that you have a truly beautiful day.

Risks and challenges

I said that this was the most difficult writing project I have ever tried and I say this truthfully. It won't be hard to find things to journal about as I'm bombarded with the sights and sounds, the tastes, the colors, the language and music of a culture so different from my own. But it will be hard for me to express the deep-rooted tension of my feelings as I take it all in. It won't be easy for me to even think about the utter horror of the outrages that are committed against girls so much like me. How will I express the beauty of meeting women who have left prostitution behind, of laughing with children who have been rescued from danger? Or the angst of seeing and knowing that there are still so many girls that need help? I don't know how I will do it, but I know that God will give me the endurance to handle what I learn and experience and the words to express it. I want to open people's eyes to what is going on so that they will never again take for granted what they have. People need to hear - they need to know, no matter how hard it is. And may something beautiful grow out of our grief and our tears - a love for these women and a commitment to help them that will change lives.
