MOOF! Our new CD for the new year with a new approach:
Double Naught Spy Car invited some of our favorite fearless musicians to write and record brand new instrumental songs. The sessions were fun and action packed, and we had a difficult but delightful task of whittling down to these 12 CD tracks.
Special guests Nels Cline, Mike Watt, Sylvia Juncosa, Joe Baiza, Joe Gore, Sara Ardizzoni, Elvis Kuehn, Ben Vaughn, Chris Lawrence, Woody Aplanalp, Danny McGough, Vince Meghrouni, and Carlos Alvidrez came in blazing with killer ideas, solos, textures, and energy. (click on each name to check out their rock adventures.)
Genres? Well: space rock with Nels Cline, Hermannesque noir blues with FIDLAR's guitar slinger Elvis Kuehn, neo lounge with Danny McGough's Italian 60s keyboard, exotica darkly with Ben Vaughn's telecaster, scorched metailica with Sylvia Juncosa, chiming Byrds 12 string melody with Chris Lawrence, math rock with Joe Baiza, Euro pop with Euro star Sara Ardizzoni, 70s funk jazz with Mike Watt, Joe Gore, Vince Meghrouni and Carlos Alvidrez, and dreamlike soundscape ambience with Woody Aplanalp. That's as close as we can come to descriptions. Each song is as unique as its collaborators.
We're raising funds to pay for mastering, CD manufacture, and radio and press promo. Joe and Kira from Non Credo are working with Grammy winner Rachel Gutek on the deluxe CD artwork. Mastering will be by five time Grammy winner Alfonso Rodenas. This might be our best release yet!
Risks and challenges
The big risk is done, and we're glad we got up the nerve to do it! Inviting 15 musicians you've long admired to come into your studio, sit down, plug in, and make up songs--well, it might go quite well, and it might go quite badly, or worse, fall flat.
Our best hopes came in--fun, wit, heaviosity, and ideas sparking from the moment we rolled tape. A feast of colors, textures, and solos.
We also sent song basics (drums, bass, and guitar/steel) to out of towners Nels Cline and Sara Ardizzoni, and they sent back overdubs that reshaped and redefined the songs in ways we couldn't have imagined. The muses were smiling.
We have lots of other songs that didn't make this cut that we'll release in some form on our new Bandcamp page throughout 2017, see Rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
