Help us go digital or we'll go dark!
Save our theater!
We're a small town with a love of movies!
Hollywood studios are reducing their movie production and distribution costs by eliminating the use of film. Every movie theater will either convert their film projection systems to the digital format or they will have no movies to show.
This means that the Harbor Theater must upgrade its audio and visual equipment at an estimated cost of at least $70,000.
Since the Harbor Theater is an independently owned theater, it will have to pay these costs on its own. The Harbor Theater is a labor of love, operated as a community service by a retiree. There is no shrewd businessman or big chain behind this local theater, just a man who loves movies. The theatre just breaks even so we are appealing to movie lovers to help us make the transition into the digital age.
Digital is the future, plain and simple. The digital picture and sound is awesome!! Moviegoers will be pleased. No more scratches, pops, splices, or missing frames!
Here is a link to an article about digital conversion:
To stay open, The Harbor Theater needs to purchase the following equipment:
A “D-Cinema” digital projector
An upgraded audio system to deliver digitally produced sound.
New lenses to display the movie properly on the screen.
A server to download and store the digital movie content.
A backup system to keep the server online in case of power failure.
The base for the projection system and server.
Cost of delivery, installation and alignment of this new equipment.
Kickstarter may be the answer!
Our small community is doing its best to help us raise the money we need to upgrade to digital equipment. Over one hundred people have made pledges totaling over $26,000 towards our digital upgrade. This is a great start, but time is running out! We need to make the conversion before 35mm film becomes unavailable. It is already getting hard for us to get 35mm films to run. It is anticipated film will become unavailable as soon as the first quarter of 2013.
We're hoping the Kick Starter community will come to our rescue and help us raise the rest of the money we need.
Our donors will receive the best rewards we can think of!
Keep in mind Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing funding opportunity. If we don't reach our goal, the pledged funds disappear and we have nothing.
This is our last shot! Please help the Harbor Theatre make the conversion so we can continue to provide movies in the Boothbay region for years to come!
