About

I grew up in Denver and became involved in the punk scene in 1982. A group of friends and I formed a band in 1983 and played our first show in 1984. I eventually got involved in promoting shows (1987-92) and started a record label, Donut Crew Records (1988-1991), to document current Denver area bands of the time. In short, punk and hardcore music from that era have always been my passion.

In 1996, I started gathering fliers and talking to people with the intentions of writing a book documenting the Denver Punk Scene. The idea was shelved for almost a dozen years. This project has been re-awakened by the loss of a handful of friends from the scene. I had to make the decision that it was now or never. I dusted-off a handful of old stories, started making art, and reconnecting with old friends. Thus far, it has been an incredible journey.

My intention with the project is to document a time that was important in Denver's cultural evolution. Overall, there is vacuum when it comes to the documented history of underground music and culture in Denver. The project thus far has captured the climate of the early-to-mid-eighties through storytelling and art. Denvoid and the Cowtown Punks isn't attempting to be the defining word in Denver's rich punk history; it is simply an introduction, as we all have our own story to tell.

What makes Denvoid and the Cowtown Punks a different kind of punk history book is its fusion of writing, art, and collected artifacts. I have turned photographs into expressive brush and ink drawings and/or oil paintings that I feel emulate the energy of the the subject matter. I have created more than 100 of these images.

Currently the project is posted online at: http://punkerbob.blogspot.com and will soon be turned into a physical book with additional art, stories, and other information. The book will be released in late September 2015 and will coincide with an opening and art exhibition in Denver (TBA). Punk historian, professor, and author David Ensminger (Left Of The Dial: Conversations With Punk Icons and Visual Vitriol: The Street Art and Subcultures of the Punk and Hardcore Generation) will be the editor. Our very own Sonny Kay (Angel Hair/The VSS/Gold Standard Labs.) is the layout and design guru. I greatly admire both David’s and Sonny’s work and feel honored by their willingness to be involved with this project.

Thank you in advance your support.
