-First, the Flood lights on the Omnipacks are 56 lumens! The Omnipack is able to do this by using 5mm straw hat LEDs.  These LEDs are built into the straps and have 160 degree angle for maximum flood capabilities. Also, since the Flood lights are built into the straps that are 56 lumens of hands free light.

-Second, the Directional light is located in the strap. The LEDs used are Nichia LEDs, which means they are some of the most efficient LEDs on the market.  Ten of these 5mm LEDs have the brightness of 255 lumens! Also, the LEDs have a viewing degree of 35, which increases the hotspot of the light.

-Third, the Taillight consists of 4 red 5mm LEDs on the back of the backpack. These LEDs can be seen up to 500’. The taillight is great for anyone walking, running, biking, etc., during early morning or late night. Unlike some red signal lights, like headlights or flashlights, the LEDs are spread out so any drivers or others do not miss the signal light.

-Fourth, the Amplified speakers consist of an amplifier and 2 speakers. To play music, just plug the included 3.5mm audio cable into the audio jack on the strap and plug the other end into your phone, mp3 player, tablet, etc. Then, on the side of the pack there is the dashboard, that controls the amp. The dashboard also has an on/off switch for the amp.

-Fifth, the RGB LEDs are built into the straps. RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue light, these colors are great for different uses.

-Sixth, the USB phone charger, which can charge up most every device that uses USB. The charger can charge up to 1,000mAh at a time, similar to a wall charger.

About the customized Backpack with Paramount Bags Company

Over this past year, Mahnke Labs worked with Paramount Bags.  After many, many hours of designing and adding features to the backpack, we finally came up with a final design and features to go along with that. The pack is made with ballistic nylon, and is designed just for the needs of the Omnipack series. For example, one of the things that were added were wire tunnels. These wire tunnels are on and around the backpack, with no exposed wires.  All the tunnels lead to 3 different meeting areas.  The battery box (located on the bottom of the main compartment), the dashboard (located on the side of the pack) and lastly the control panel located on the straps.

-About Paramount Bags,

Omnipack and Natural disasters

Phones being charged after Hurrican Sandy
Phones being charged after Hurrican Sandy

The Omnipacks are an excellent choice to be used during and after natural disasters. Between its rugged design and the exceptional features, it is the perfect tool to have during many natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina, where the power was corrupt for a long period of time.  The Omnipacks would excel. The Omnipacks could easily light up a room with 56 lumens of flood light to save power, or use the directional lights with 255 lumens of bright light to illuminate a room or both with 311 lumens for needed light situations. The night lights could be used with either the taillights or the front red, green or blue LEDs. Also, the pack can easily be recharged in the sun light during these situations.  Additionally with the Omnipack Canonic, the AA can be easily replaced if dead. Along with lights, another big problem is charging phones.  Phones are a big part any natural disaster, if you want to call for help, or tell other people you are okay.  When there isn’t any power to charge your phone, you have a problem. With the Omnipacks that is not a problem anymore!  The Omnipacks are able to charge your mobile phone. Along with the Nichia LEDs being one of the most efficient LEDs on the market, that means many hours of use. Also the Omnipack and Omnipack Extent are able to amplify small radios, so many more people can listen to important radio updates or music.

Will the wire get in the way?

No, The wire in the Omnipacks are routed through a unique hardly noticeable tunnel system along the sides of the wall on the backpack. The wires are along the seams, so they do not interfere in any way with the pockets.

ML Omnipack Prototypes

Over the past year and a half, many lessons were learned through the prototypes of the Omnipack Series. Some of the problems that were faced during the prototypes stages were deciding on what kinds of LEDs to use. During the prototypes, Surface Mount LEDs were ruled out because of their wide angle.  A reflector or convex dome would have to be used to focus the beam into a directional or even a useable flood (upwards of 5 feet). So the decision was made to use lamp type light emitting diodes (LEDs). Another major decision was choosing the wattage of the audio amplifier. With 3.1 watts, it is the perfect match between decibel level and the wattage that can be obtained while also charging a phone or having all lights on. In addition to deciding on the amp, we had to decide on 1 or 2 speakers.  We ended up going with 2 speakers for better sound area, where there is less of a chance of the speaker being covered up. Then, we had to determine the wattage of the speakers.  We picked speakers with higher rated wattage than the amp puts out, meaning better sound with less distortion. We also needed to choose the amperage of the USB output (phone charger). Unlike most other portable USB chargers that put out 300 – 800 mAh which means longer charge times, the Omnipack puts out 1 Amp.  This is similar to a wall charger which means fast charge times. The reason the Omnipacks can achieve this is because of the large battery in each backpack. Other decisions consisted of whether or not to add RGB (Red, green, blue) lights to the pack. In the end, we decided to include RGB’s. RGB’s add many more features on the Omnipacks with a different use for each waveform of light. Choosing what type of material to use was a big decision as well. We did not want the Omnipacks to rip after 1 or 2 years of use, yet the electronics still be intact. So we decided to use ballistic nylon.  Ballistic nylon is a very rugged material that was once used in bulletproof vests in WW2. Another example of choosing between two different areas of the backpack, was deciding on whether to use 4 LEDs to show the charge of the battery. We chose to use a color-coded Voltage indicator.  We did this to give the user better perception.  With a 4 LED system you can only tell between 25, 50, 75 and 100%.  However, it could be anywhere between the percentages (example: 50% LED could mean anywhere from 26%-74%). With a color coded battery indicator, the colors blend together for much more perception.  Instead of having only 4 options there are instead, many colors to tell the voltage.

Risks and challenges

Some of the challenges were getting a customized backpack. So Mahnke Labs partnered with Paramount bags to make the Omnipacks. Trying to tell paramount how to make the straps and make the dashboard and control panel was difficult. But after many month it was finally achieved. Also another challenge was coping with voltage sag. In USB charger there were some problems with voltage sag, these have since been fixed with a new ic that can handle 1A output, and the data ports going to the smartphone.
