About this project
Timeless design for modern lifestyles. The Sphelar Lantern is hourglass shaped solar lighting you tip down during the day recharge, and tip up at night for a soft light.
The Sphelar Stick is a handy solar flashlight that with its unique solar cells allows for a cylindrical shape that has been difficult to produce with typically flat solar cells. The rounded shape makes it easy to use for all of your outdoor activities and even on your bicycle.
Until now, solar lighting has been largely intended for outdoor use. The Sphelar Lantern was designed to balance and coordinate with interiors as well as exterior living spaces so the benefits of solar can be enjoyed every day. Sphelar Lantern shines with the soft light of a candle, stimulating dinner table ambiance or offering tranquility by the bedside.
The Sphelar Stick is practicality beyond form and function. The natural white light LED is bright enough to use while cycling. Keep it on you to light the streets at night, or use the included wooden stand to keep by your window for whenever you may need it.
No more clunky, black squares to keep you from further including solar energy into your design lifestyle. Sphelar lighting offers both the benefits of renewable energy and modern design to make solar a personal part of your everyday life.
Sphelar Lantern is a harmony of natural wood and advanced materials designed to fit the elegance of the modern interior. The opalescent acrylic shade locks into the wood base for everyday water resistance—another proud feature of the craftsmanship involved. And less than the size and weight of an average bottle of water, it is unobtrusive and easy to handle.
The Sphelar Stick handle is made from aluminum, but with a choice of colors, you can carry it around with you in style. Go with modern silver, a subdued navy or copper inspired by the gradations of the sunset, or the ever-friendly olive green. The handle diameter is sized to that of other common LED flashlights, so it will fit many available bicycle flashlight brackets.
The innovation behind these two products are micro bead solar cells we call “Sphelar”.
Those little black pearls embedded in the clear acrylic are the solar cells. Because of their spherical shape, Sphelar catch light from 360°. Our patented solar cell structure answers the long pondered over question of how to capture light at any angle. Powered by Sphelar, the Sphelar Lantern and Sphelar Stick will always be ready catch the sun regardless of which direction it is shining.
The hourglass shape of the Sphelar Lantern is more than just stylish design. When flipped upside down, Sphelar Lantern knows when to light and when to charge. Setting the Sphelar Lantern with the black Sphelar pearls up, it begins to recharge. When recharged, turn it over with the shade up to turn on Sphelar’s soft light. Just like sand in a real hourglass, you can imagine the circular flow of the solar energy.
To turn on the Sphelar Stick, simply give the LED end a twist. In its off position, there will be a slight gap from the base and the head, and when twisted on, the head will reel out—opposite from traditional flashlights. We also paid special attention to give the Sphelar Stick an aesthetically pleasing look when closed.
And because both the Sphelar Lantern and Stick use the Sphelar solar cells, they can be recharged without having to worry about which way the sun is coming from. Place on your windowsill or balcony to charge and add to your decor, or take your Sphelar Stick with you clipped on your purse or bag as an essential accessory.
Sphelar lighting strikes a firm balance between charge and lighting times.
Sphelar Lantern is a fully contained product. Place it on your windowsill during the day, and Sphelar will “remember” the light. Then at night, Sphelar will “recall” that light for you. On a clear day, the Sphelar Lantern takes 4 to 6 hours to recharge, giving about 4 hours of lighting for night. As is with all solar cells, on rainy or cloudy days, charge capacity does diminish, so nighttime lighting will be reduced. Through your experience with Sphelar, we hope you will enjoy a deeper consciousness of the changes that nature brings. But there is always the USB connection to charge Sphelar when needed.
The LED light of the Sphelar Stick will run for a maximum of 4 hours. With a 6 to 8 hour charge during the day, Sphelar Stick will give you a lighting time of 30 minutes. This balance of charge and lighting time differs from the Sphelar Lantern due to the compact size, and with this balance in mind, we designed Sphelar Stick for two main situations. The first is for an everyday use of 30 minutes to brighten your way from work or school at night. The second is for weekend camping and outdoor activities where you can take advantage of its 4 hour lighting capacity.
The Sphelar Lantern and Sphelar Stick are already for sale in Japan. The Sphelar Lantern was first available in the winter of 2011, and the Sphelar Stick in the summer of 2013. The Sphelar Stick was also featured at MoMA in New York and test marketed in Singapore, but we have not been able to launch Sphelar for export. It has pained us to tell tourists coming back to their home country that they could not purchase it where they live.
Our motivation with this Kickstarter is make our Sphelar available everywhere. Having already gone through test marketing in Japan and with the feedback we have received, the Sphelar product line has already undergone several modifications including making the Sphelar Lantern lighter and water resistant. We have also obtained CE certification.
