With your support, today we hit our goal!

Thank you for sharing our passion to get this film into full production. Though we are enjoying this milestone moment, we are not resting. With 7 days left in this campaign, we want to keep pushing to reach our stretch goal - $40,000.

Central to the film is volunteer head coach Frank Ruona, a veteran of 78 marathons and 38 ultra-marathons

By adding $10,000 in pledges, we can add to the number of shooting days this season, continue to shoot and edit into the film’s mid-season, create social media content to build-out our online presence and grow our grassroots community. So we encourage you to continue to pledge and share this campaign with your friends and networks.

Together, let's go the distance.

ABOUT THE FILM

San Quentin Marathon documents the making of marathon runners inside San Quentin State Prison. As inmates train with their volunteer coaches for the annual race, they navigate the complexities of incarceration and their emotions. The film explores the impact of running on the rehabilitation and redemption of prisoners, and of released men as they build new lives on the outside.

"I think we run for penance. We don't get a trophy or a scooby snack for running a marathon. And yet, so many guys are here dedicated." -Rahsaan Thomas is a member of the 1000 Mile Club, writer and member of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The San Quentin Prison Marathon is a grueling test of willpower and stamina. Since the marathon started in 2008, more than 300 inmates have signed up to join The 1000 Mile Club - the prison's running club - to run the 26.2 mile race. But only 32 men have successfully completed the punishing course -- 105 laps on a quarter mile uneven, dirt and concrete path that loops the prison's lower yard.

The members of the 1000 Mile Club have committed a range of crimes, from murder and armed robbery to drunk driving and drug related violations. Throughout the year, Frank Ruona, their volunteer coach, and his dedicated volunteer assistant coaches, organize track events to prepare the inmates for the annual marathon. But there are a myriad of organizational challenges and on top of that, many inmates struggle with issues stemming from feelings of anger, failure, guilt, or ill health. But for all the men, participating in the marathon is worth the fight. Mastering the art of long distance running is a chance to see themselves as something other than the sum of their crimes and to experience freedom, or something like it.

Markelle Taylor, the "Gazelle of San Quentin" is the club's current reigning champ, placing first at the marathon for 2 years in a row. He holds the club record for finishing in 3:16:07 in 2015.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

I first read about the San Quentin marathon in a GQ Magazine article. Being a runner myself, I could imagine the therapeutic benefits running could have on inmates, and the image of a person running around in circles to find some kind of freedom inside a prison resonated with me profoundly and with cruel irony. As I began my research, I was moved to learn that for some, completing the marathon is their single greatest achievement in life. They say running teaches discipline, gives a space to visualize success, and offers a calm mental place to mend broken family relationships. What I found most inspiring was learning that, over the years, the impact of the 1000 Mile Club has expanded beyond the prison walls.

My main passion is telling stories of under-represented voices. This comes from my experience as a woman and as a person of color and the feeling of invisibility that comes from not seeing images that reflect and reinforce your place in the US mainstream. Most of my previous work has been in narrative storytelling and when I started this project, I approached it as such. But in my research, I began to feel limitations with the narrative format and felt the documentary medium would allow me to address directly the issues brought out organically by the subject matter.

A life-long registered Republican, Volunteer Coach Frank Ruona has evolved into an accidental advocate for prison reform.

There are those who believe that programs like the running club coddle inmates and that prisoners should not have access to them. A life-long registered Republican, Coach Frank Ruona has become more attuned to the US prison system over the years volunteering at San Quentin, and now finds himself questioning how we as a society treat those who are incarcerated. Punishment or rehabilitation?

THE ISSUES

With 2.2 million men, women and juveniles behind bars, the United States incarcerates more people than anywhere in the world. But we also release them – about 90% are eventually set free. However with little to no support after their release, 76.6% of those released are re-arrested within 5 years. What are the root causes of recidivism? What is the relationship between recidivism and access to programs, like the running club? What impact does running have on the lives of current and former inmates?

MAIN SUBJECTS

 SUPPORTING SUBJECTS

 USE OF FUNDS

The goal of this campaign is to raise a minimum of $30,000 through Kickstarter, a funding platform for creative projects, which uses an "all or nothing" approach. If we successfully reach our goal before our 30-day campaign ends, your credit card will be charged, we will send your chosen rewards, and we will be on our way to getting the film shot and several steps closer to the finish line.

If we do not reach our funding goal, we keep $0, your card will never be charged, the super cool rewards won't get sent, and we will not be able to share SAN QUENTIN MARATHON with you anytime soon.

With the money we raise, we will capture the early training season, the physical and mental journey of the inmates, formal and informal workouts and daily life with our featured subjects inside San Quentin. We will explore how Frank organizes the club within the complex prison bureaucracy and the challenges faced by former inmates on the outside. The early training season culminates with released members running The Dipsea in Marin County, the oldest trail race in the USA, which we will shoot with a multi-camera crew.

We have begun shooting with our subjects on the outside and to date have paid for all costs with our own money - research and development, production, editing, legal and travel. The money we raise here is vital to getting our documentary into full production and will cover the minimum for:

  • Production Costs (including crew, equipment and editing) - 75%
  • Travel Costs (several crew members are LA based) - 6%
  • Insurance - 3%
  • Legal - 3%
  • Cost to produce and ship Kickstarter Rewards - 5%
  • Kickstarter fees and credit card payment processing fees - 8%

We have left the starting line and need your help to reach the finish line.

WHY KICKSTARTER

We chose to turn to the Kickstarter community of individual backers to launch the film for two reasons. First and foremost, maintaining an independent status and delivering a movie we feel is authentic and without compromise in the portrayal of its subject matter is of highest priority. Second, building the film's audience upon a foundation of Kickstarter supporters is proven to be extremely advantageous in bringing the film to as wide an audience as possible -- our ultimate goal. You are that foundation and, as a supporter of this Kickstarter campaign, have the opportunity to experience SAN QUENTIN MARATHON not only as a completed film, but also the journey towards the finish. As they say, "half the fun is getting there."

Every contribution to this campaign is appreciated and essential in enabling us to bring our shooting to completion this year.

stARTup Art Fair is a contemporary art hotel fair founded by artist, Ray Beldner, in San Francisco to provide more opportunities for independent artists to show their work to an audience of industry professionals and the art loving public. Since its inception in 2015, we've expanded to Chicago and Los Angeles, started a POS image recognition app, and created a partnership with Shenzhen City art fair in China.

The more access that dedicated artists have to dealers, collectors, art advisors, and arts organizations and the art buying public, the better they can thrive as artists and professionals. Our mission at stARTup Art Fair is to create such an opportunity for artists and art enthusiasts.

THE TEAM

We are eager to share with the world an uplifting story about something positive that is happening in our prison system. We hope the film can put a human face on and create a connection with a few of the 2.2 million people who are now living behind bars. Lastly, we hope the film empowers you to believe that change is possible -- that it is happening.

Risks and challenges

This is an ambitious project. While this documentary will take a verite approach in many of our personal moments with subjects, the sporting events featured in the film require careful coordination and planning in advance. At this juncture, lack of proper funding is our greatest challenge. This is an independent film -- we need funds to film this story and your involvement to let people know about it.
