ACTIONCAM360. 360° panoramic video lens for GoPro & Similar
Capture the action from all angles with this new lens which is compatible with GoPro cameras & others to give 360 interactive viewing.
How many people have missed videoing their friend doing something amazing or wiping out in spectacular style because they’re behind them on the slopes or race track? This will never be missed if you are recording in 360
What is the actioncam360?
The actioncam 360 is very special housing for your GoPro camera that will enable you to capture 360 degree video with a single camera. Once you have filmed it then our software will process it and make it fully interactive when either viewing locally on your own PC or sharing them with friend online through our 360 hosting platform.
Initially we are focused on launching actioncam360 housings suitable for the GoPro HERO 2 and GoPro HERO 3 (and 3+) cameras which we expect to retail at £250 and £280 respectively. So by backing us you'll get the earliest availability and save approximately 20%, along with web hosting for your videos.
Note:GOPRO®, HERO®, & NAKED® are trademarks or registered trademarks of Woodham Labs, Inc. in the United States and other countries.
We will be introducing further projects to cater for the ever increasing availability of newly developed products from alternative manufacturers.
actioncam360 makes the news
When Andy Blackmore from Metro reviewed the Gadget Show in London he wrote: “the actioncam 360 stands out head and shoulders above the rest.”
Whilst Cosmin Anton at softpedia noted that the actioncam360 "gives you the freedom to capture 360° video with a single camera"
In January 2006 Pano Pro Ltd was incorporated.
From that time Pano Pro Ltd has continued to work in the field of 360 degree imaging and has constantly been developing its products, software and methods to meet the advances in new technology.
The company was originally formed because we were excited by the possibilities of capturing full 360° single shot stills and our Pano Pro MkII is a growing success story which is sold worldwide. Developments in computing and higher image quality video cameras now allow users to create affordable 360° video using their camcorders and DSLR cameras with the Pano Pro MkII.
Technology and people don't stand still so now it's time for a new challenge and we're focusing on the ever increasing capabilities of smaller 'action cams'. To do this we are developing the "actioncam360".
People keep thinking of new and exciting uses for 360° cameras and videos and we want to put the right tools in their hands (or on their heads!) to enable them to capture and share their exciting journeys.
The designed unit is made up from 3 parts making it easy to replace any scratched/ damaged parts ( we see the tube as being the most commonly replaced part)
- The Housing.
- This housing will hold the camera and include:
- A secondary "correcting" lens along with a circular viewing restrictor/ anti reflection cowl,
- A threaded mount for attaching the tube.
- The Clear Tube
- This tube is of highest quality cast acrylic to give the best possible optical clarity, it is machined to length and threaded at both ends to connect to the housing and the cap with mirror.
The Cap with Mirror.
This is an aluminum cap with the glass mirror bonded centrally to the underside of it, the cap is threaded to fit the acrylic tube.
In order to move from a working prototype to a production model there are still further further actions required.
- Professional underwater testing to a depth of 40 meters,
- The manufacture of production tooling so that we can achieve economies of scale needed to make the units affordable.
- The further development of software.
- The development of units for the latest models of the GoPro cameras.
- The investigation/testing of secondary coating of the clear tube with a Hydrophobic nano coating
We are now at the stage where we are happy that this new product will bring excitement in sharing experiences and also help to improve techniques in extreme sports.
To be able to study in detail how you have performed on a race track or rally course after the event is over will act as a great learning tool. This would apply to many sports and also allow you to share your excitement with friends and acquaintances. It of course does not just apply to sport but can capture the very many important times in your life. Your wedding, Music festivals, Birthday parties, School sports days or in fact almost anything you can imagine.
Please join us on this journey by becoming part of the development. .
The development of the actioncam360 has gone through many stages as shown below.
The first working prototype was for the Cam1 infinity which had interchangeable lens. It made sense to start working with this model as it allowed the use of a small mirror which could be focused on by choosing a suitable lens to adapt the focal length.
GoPro is the market leader in actioncams but as they have fixed lenses we needed to put in some extra development work to produce a unit which could be used with their cameras.
In order to focus on the mirror without making changes to the camera (no one wants to invalidate their warranty and it would also make the camera out of focus for regular use)
This has been achieved by the use of additional focusing aids in the system for which forms part of the Patent applied for No. 1312542.2.

In many applications this size is not a problem however when using actioncams for certain sports size is definitely important so the ideal would be to make the unit as small as possible whilst maintaining as much quality of image. So we now concentrated on reducing the size of the unit and improving picture quality for use with the full range of GoPro cameras. This has been achieved by the use of additional focusing aids in the system for which Patents have been applied for No. 1312542.2. The resulting unit is shown below.
Links to Images from the HERO 3 unit will be uploaded once the final prototype has been produced,
We have worked on a timing plan for all units and have the below table to show a concise version of this
This is the extent of this project, however we will be bringing forward new projects to deal with alternative actioncam video cameras from other manufacturers.
Risks and challenges
As you can imagine we have learnt a lot from developing the Pano Pro. We have a wealth of experience in sourcing, the production of prototypes, drawings, suppliers for full production, packaging, and distribution.
Despite all this experience as the project progresses we expect to find that there are further design/ manufacture challenges we have to address so that that we ensure that the final product is of the highest standard and quality.
This, as with the Pano Pro, will be achieved by extensive in house testing and providing Beta models for user feedback.
The Software that is being developed for this project is under way with the hosting nearing completion and the GoPro firmware modification having been assigned to a developer,
The hosting should be going live during the run of the kickstarter project, a link will be provided as soon as it is available for viewing.
In the event that we have problems with any of our chosen suppliers we have set up secondary supply chains to ensure we can get back on schedule as quickly as possible. All this has been achievable due to our experience in producing the Pano Pro lens.
