All Rack: The High-Capacity Bike Carrier for Families
A compact hitch-mounted bike carrier that securely holds twice the number of bikes as most other racks. Now the whole family can ride!
If you have a big family, or ever needed to transport more than three or four bicycles at a time, you'll appreciate the problem that the All Rack elegantly solves. If you're mixing adult and children's bikes, you can fit up to eight on the All Rack! That's crazy awesome.
The All Rack attaches to a standard 2" trailer hitch, and then modular wheel baskets can be added or removed from the top bar as needed. The modular nature of the baskets is a real innovation, allowing you to add or remove bikes of various sizes and wheel dimensions as you wish. Bikes are securely held by their respective basket, and then each wheel is also strapped to the rack itself for added security and stability.
One of the many benefits of this design is that bikes don't need to be removed in any specific order, unlike many other carriers. If you want to take one bike off the All Rack, just lift it out of its basket, and leave the other bikes on the rack!
I'm an engineer, and like most engineers I love solving problems and innovating creative solutions. My problem was that my family (wife and five kids) likes to bike together, but no bike rack on the market could accommodate all our bicycles. So I built my own — my dream bike carrier!
Friends, family, and even strangers on the street began asking me where I got my unique bike rack, and then if I could build one for them, too. So like many engineers-with-a-dream before me, I've come to Kickstarter to get the funding necessary to begin a larger scale production effort, and to see if others agree that the All Rack is a good idea.
I hope to sell the All Rack online and in bike stores once the Kickstarter is (successfully) completed. I anticipate that they will retail for a lot more than backers can get them for here (probably around $1000), so it's a good opportunity to get an All Rack now if you want one! And if you act fast, you'll even get yours in time for Christmas. (Ah, there's nothing like the gift of tailer-hitch-mounted bike accessories!)
And bear in mind there is currently extra value if you're from the United States, since the reward tiers are all set in Canadian dollars. (So an $700 rack ends up costing only ~$530 US!)
The All Rack weighs 60 lbs without wheel baskets, and each basket weighs around 3 to 5 lbs each, depending on their size.
The All Rack fits into any heavy-duty 2-inch hitch, and is not compatible with fork-mounted fenders. (Though most fork-mounted fenders are easy to remove.)
The baskets can hold wheels from 12 to 29 inches in diameter, and from 23mm to 5 inches wide. See below for a detailed list. (The basket that holds a 29-inch diameter wheel is not pictured here.)
- 1. Fits 12 to 16 inch diameter wheels, up to 2 inches wide
- 2. Fits 16 to 20 inch diameter wheels, up to 2 inches wide
- 3. Fits 20 to 27.56 inch (700mm) diameter wheels, up to 1 inch wide
- 4. Fits 20 to 26 inch diameter wheels, up to 2 inches wide
- 5. Fits 20 to 26 inch diameter wheels, up to 4 inches wide
Note: If you have a particularly heavy bicycle, (like a three-wheeler), or plan to use the All Rack on the back of a travel trailer, or expect much off-roading, you may wish to upgrade to a "heavy-duty" style basket. If so, please add $20 to your pledge level ($5 per basket).
(Additional baskets may be added to your pledge at the rate of $35 per standard basket, and $40 per heavy-duty basket. See "Add-On" section below for details.)
The basic All Rack colour is black, but certain reward tiers allow you to choose a colour for your All Rack. In addition to black, the following colours are available:
(Note: The wheel baskets are always black.)
The Next Step...
Everything is in place; materials, machine shops, welders, powder coating... I just need $13,000 from Kickstarter backers in order to place some bulk materials orders and for shop rental fees, and then I can start to manufacture the All Rack at a larger scale and get it out into the world.
Pledge Level Rewards:
Once you're a backer, go to the "Manage Pledge" button at the top of the page and adjust your pledge amount accordingly in order to include any add-on items you wish. There are no additional shipping charges for Add-Ons. (You will let us know what the extra money is for when we send out backer surveys after the Kickstarter campaign ends.)
Additional "Standard" Wheel Baskets: $35 each — Every family is different, and so is every bike, so we're giving you four standard wheel baskets with each rack, and letting you add more as needed. For each additional basket, add $35 to your order. Baskets come in five different sizes to accommodate any standard tire width, from adult to child, and you get two additional wheel straps per basket. (Your size choices will be collected in the post-campaign backer survey.) No additional shipping costs required.
Note: if you want the four baskets that come with your rack to be 'heavy-duty' rather than 'standard', add $20 to your pledge. (That's $5 per basket.)
Additional "Heavy-Duty" Wheel Baskets: $40 each — You may prefer "heavy-duty" baskets if your bike is unusually heavy, or if you plan to do much off-roading, or intend to use the All Rack on a travel trailer.
T-Shirt: $40 – A beautiful black shirt with our stunning logo silk-screened in white across the front.
Storage Dolly: $300 – The trailer hitch on the All Rack allows for my favourite add-on, which is a dolly on wheels, so you can use the All Rack both to transport your bikes across the country by car, and to store them conveniently in your garage. Just add $300 to your order to get your own dolly. No additional shipping fees required.
Sticker: $10 – Look, if you really want a sweet sticker of our awesome logo, who am I to stop you? Just add $10 to your pledge, and it's yours. (Add $20 and you can get the decal instead.)
Ask me anything...
I want you to be confident when you become a backer, so if there's anything you don't understand, or want to know more about, let me know. I'll update the FAQ as questions start to come in.
Q. Does the All Rack fit a three-wheeler (a.k.a. the 'adult tricycle')?
A. Yes it does! (But you'll want a "heavy-duty" wheel basket for it.)
Risks and challenges
I've been working on this product for almost two years leading up to this campaign. The design is complete, we've built, tested, and iterated multiple prototypes; everything is working great and production is ready to go! I'm working with a small team, but we're all skilled professionals and we're ready to ramp up production. If this campaign is successful, we'll be hitting the ground running the day this Kickstarter closes.
I've tried to be as conservative as possible with the shipping times, and I don't anticipate any delays. If all goes according to plan, I should even be able to ship earlier than the specified ship dates! Under-promise and over-deliver; that's what my Dad always taught me.
The biggest challenge, frankly, would be if this Kickstarter becomes a huge, unprecedented success and I have many hundreds of racks to manufacture. (I know, we should all have those kinds of problems...) I used worse-case-scenario shipping times in anticipation of this potential outcome, so unless I get ten thousand backers all pledging for a rack, we should be good.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
