The SmartiPi Twist is a flexible arm and case that holds a Raspberry Pi Zero ( all versions), official Raspberry Pi camera ( all versions), and Pi zero pHATs (HATs that are the size of a Pi Zero). Both the standard Raspberry Pi camera and Raspberry Pi IR (infrared light) night vision camera will fit in the case. The arm can be lengthened and shortened by removing the sections by hand. The arm includes a base that can attach to a flat surface. Your power and usb cables can run down the center. The included pHAT cover will a clear window will allow you to add pHATs to add light to your scene if wish.
We could not find any infrared LED pHATS on the market to use with the PI IR camera. You could create your own with prototype boards such as Protozero , Adafruit Perma Proto Bonnet, and FE-PI PROTO Z V1 and some infrared LEDS. The SmartiPi Twist does have enough room inside to mount Bright Pi. Bright Pi will put out infrared infrared and visible light.
There are many different factors that affect adequate lighting of a scene. Lighting is generally cumulative. We can't guarantee using a specific pHAT will adequately light your scene in a completely dark environment. Distance to the subject, ambient light, and type of camera are all factors.
The cover also has enough room to hold Bright Pi from Pi Supply. This handy little board puts out visible and IR light and connects to the GPIO pins on the Pi.
Display pHATs can also be used with the case. Below showing the Pimoroni four letter pHAT.
The case can be used with or without the pHAT cover. When used without the cover, the case is very slim and compact and can also be used with the arm.
The Raspberry Pi Zero and Raspberry Pi camera are not included with the kits.
The Pi Zero and Official Pi camera are held inside the main case. The power,USB port, and HDMI port are accessible. The SD card is not accessible once the case is closed.
Once the main case is closed, a punch out part in the plastic case can be removed and the pHAT can be inserted onto the top of the case. The cover with the clear lens is then assembled over the top. Any pHAT without connectors extending out the sides should fit inside the cover. Many of the LED boards on the market are very bright and you have plenty of height in the cover to add your own LEDS to prototype boards to create your own custom LED light source.
Clearance between the top of the main case and inside of the pHAT cover is 14mm. The Pi Zero GPIO pins tips are flush with the outside surface of the main case.
The SmartiPi Twist Kit comes with everything in the photo below. You can select to receive one, two, or three kits based on the reward that you choose.
If you would like extra individual sections for the arm, they will be available for purchase as an add on after the campaign is over.
The case in the pictures are samples and 3D printed prototypes. We need your project support in order to order to make the molds to make the injection molded parts. The funds that we raise will go to purchasing the mold and ordering the first minimum run of injection molded parts. By pledging to this project you will allow us to bring this case to the market.
The base has a hole in the center that the arm attaches to. The mounting holes on the side allow for screwing to a surface.It can also be attached to a surface with double sided tape.
Eight arm sections come with the kit, but extra sections will be available after the campaign for purchase. Extra sections allow for even more flexibility. There is no limit to how many sections that can be added. But, we recommend not adding more than twenty sections if the camera is to be held in a straight line horizontally. The friction holding the sections will eventually slip. More can can be added if the arm is to be positioned vertically as there will be less stress on the friction between the sections.
The case has a 1/4"-20 standard camera tripod thread on on the bottom. This means you can attached it to a tripod or to any mount that has a standard tripod thread. These types of mounts are available for purchase worldwide.
The SmartiPi Twist is the ultimate Octoprint case. It allows you to position the Pi camera to monitor your 3D prints while also managing power and USB cables. The arm can be attached to the included base in a perpendicular orientation and also a parallel orientation as shown below.
With the extra arm sections you have even more reach to catch those out of reach shots that are hard to get.
The case also can hold the Bright Pi LED add on board for the Raspberry Pi. This is a simple board that connects to the GPIO and can provide white or infrared light.
With the modular sections the SmartiPi Twist can be flexed in all kinds of positions.
The arm could also be connected directly to your own base bypassing the included plastic base.
We plan to start shipping to backers in late January 2018. Backers will begin receiving rewards in February 2018.
Risks and challenges
