What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Bland Sugar is a zine series that was written, designed and created as a way to encourage honest and open relationships by commenting on and calling out the B.S. in our lives. The zine leaves space for the reader to interact and respond. I hope to expand this series by covering a variety of subject matters from empathy to imposter syndrome.

My goal for this project is to encourage people to do the following;

  • Start a conversation with people about people.
  • Become more empathetic and understanding.
  • Say what they mean and mean what they say.

I believe that it is only by cutting out the bland sugar in our lives that we can accomplish those keys.

I am looking to sell Bland Sugar zines at local stores and coffee shops like Quimby’s and eventually expand to an online marketplace

Risks and challenges

A lot of the difficulties I have ran into trying to print and distribute these zines is that I do not have the materials and various design tools to print, cut, and bind the zines. When I made the original zines I was in a school where I was lucky enough to have access to all of the things I needed to make these zines. I had access to a risograph, a large laser printer, a guillotine paper cutter, high quality scanner, binding stapler. Now that I have graduated I do not have these things readily avalible to me. That is why I am setting up this Kickstart to help me get the first run of zines printed and out as well as set me up to continue to make more.
