UPDATE: We've made it over our first hurdle of $10,000! Thank you to everyone who's contributed thus far! Also an advanced thanks to all of you in the planning stages of pledging!
This initial offering is for $45,000. As the name of this site states, money will be used to kickstart Bulkhead. Once we have your support, we can keep moving forward.
Who We Are
Bulkhead Brewing is the culmination of a 30 year dream. We will be a 20 barrel production brewery with plans of opening in the summer of 2014 at the Jersey Shore. Bulkhead will focus on beer recipes made with premium ingredients and executed with passion and precision. Creativity paired with tradition will be our trademark. From classic beers for the traditionalist to delicious handcrafted liquid works of art for the most sophisticated drinkers, Bulkhead will contiually deliver the finest brews.
The inaugural brews will incude: a well hopped IPA, a Pale Ale, an Amber, a Stout and a Belgian-style Abbey. Lagers and more unique and agressively awesome beers will follow in time. Exceptional and unique ingredients, specialized brewing techniques and creative presentation of our beers will be our priority.
All our supporters will be added to our Bulkhead Hall of Fame. At least twice a year you will be invited to special events like holiday parties and launches of seasonal brews.
We are working with several realtors to find the perfect location in Ocean County for Bulklhead. High visibility in combination with a unique building sized for growth is our main criteria.
Our commitment to the Jersey Shore goes deeper than the actual brick & mortar location. Through special events and launches, Bulkhead Brewing intends to be an active part of the Restore the Shore movement.
Bulkhead Brewing is going to be a distributing brewery. Our beer will be kegged & bottled for initial distribution throughout New Jersey.
Brewery Tours will be provided regularly, by one of our knowledgable staff members. There will be a tasting room at the brewery where you can try our beers and hang out with other cool beer lovers.
Adjacent to the brewery will be the Bulkhead Bakery. Utilizing the same time-honored family traditions, our bakery will offer delicious breads, muffins, cakes, pastries and cookies that will be distributed at both locally, through our website, and, eventually, more distant markets.
Initially our beers will be distributed throughout New Jersey, with future plans to move into the surrounding states of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Maryland & Delaware. Bulkhead brands will be available by the glass, six-pack, case and keg at our tasting room, along with growlers-to-go on regular & special limited edition brews. Bulkhead will also be available both kegged, tapped and bottled at liquor stores, restaurants and taverns.
This Kickstarter project is to raise money for our first phase, and will be used to get the ball rolling. We’ve got the desire, the incentive and the passion all bottled up. Now we need the cash.
Pledging money is easy, simply choose a reward on the right, click it and follow the easy steps. You will need an Amazon account to complete the pledge.
Please Note: Kickstarter will only charge your card if we meet our project goal of $45,000 by the deadline date. Please spread the word. The more the merrier. We welcome you to join our Bulkhead family. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will be handled with the same degree of appreciation and respect.
Together, we can make it happen!
What You Get
Cool stuff! Everyone gets something! From awesome Bulkhead gear to private dinner parties, to a vacation -- your pick! Here are some visual aids to assist you in your selection process. Choose well, my friends.
In 1852 our ancestor George Enzbrenner opened the Enzbrenner Brewery in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The brewery passed through the generations, surviving both women’s temperance and prohibition, reopening as Altoona Brewing. Due to pressure from larger breweries, the business closed in 1974, leaving fond memories of the fresh tastes of both Curve or Pop’s Brau beers.
In homage to our family history, we will be brewing an all barley malt, non-adjunct version of the original pre-prohibition beer.
What IS Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a "crowdfunding" website that allows creative people to reach out to their friends, family, neighbors, and prospective customers to help get their ideas off the ground. Whether it's a musician pressing a new album, an inventor looking to fund a first production run, or a brewery trying to make history, each creator sets a goal to reach.
If the total pledges don't reach the goal, then the project is not funded at all. The pledges aren't an investment in the business in that you don't get a share of the company- this fundraiser is to aid us in the creation of our brewery.
Kickstarter has a great FAQ here: http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/kickstarter%20basics.
Risks and challenges
Once we reach our goal, we can put this baby into action. We’ll chase after some serious coin (big time investors welcome -- give us a ring). We’ll begin the acquisition of equipment.
Tap Room & Bakery Equipment (ovens, stove, refrigeration, etc.)
We'll finalize our search for a permanent location and actually begin the buildout of the brewery, bakery and tasting room.
Constructing cold storage space and fermentation area
Commissioning a custom bar
Assembling the brewhouse and draft equipment
Renovations to the building
Construction of the bakery & tasting room (and bathrooms)
The next big hurdle will be getting licensed by the state ABC and TTB. That can take as long as 3 months, and all the while we have to be paying rent, testing our equipment, buying up ingredients, and paying our utility bills all while not being able to sell beer!
Then after all of that, if everything goes well and we are licensed without a problem, we can start brewing beer for sale. Once we have enough for our grand opening, we'll officially open our doors!
