About Arthur Russell
Arthur Russell was a cellist, composer, and singer-songwriter, who lived and worked in the East Village in New York City from the 1970s until his untimely death from AIDS-related causes in 1992. Arthur created genre-defying music spanning folk, rock, dance, and experimental. His work was admired and supported by artist peers such as Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, Nicki Siano, and David Byrne in his lifetime, although he was largely underground and not well known. Two decades after his death, Russell's groundbreaking and unique sound has grown to be a seminal influence on contemporary music.
"I moved to New York because of Arthur Russell -- he's my favorite musician. Over the last two years, I've listened to him constantly and have been reading this book called Hold On to Your Dreams about how downtown, experimental, underground disco and classical composition and all those scenes blended together. There's all these addresses where Arthur would go hang out and it was so beguiling and just pulled me towards moving back to New York." – Devendra Banhart
“The first time I heard him, I assumed that he was a currently active artist. He sounded to me like someone who was working right now, and right now sort of despite everything. He has an access to his creativity that’s uninhibited and so it feels very natural.” – DM Stith, The Revival Hour
"It was like hearing a voice that I’d heard in my mind before or something. It felt very familiar and it was just so beautiful." – Sam Amidon
first time I heard it, I didn’t realize it was him the first 10 or 15
seconds in, I was just thinking [he] was just some new blog sensation.” –
Ernest Greene, Washed Out
“Arthur Russell is kind of the first modern musician. He did everything well, confoundingly, confusingly, upside-down, backwards, etc. The music is simultaneously thoughtful and carefree. I aspire wildly to that combination.” – Nico Muhly
About Red Hot
Red Hot was founded in 1989, and ever since then has been utilizing the medium of pop culture to promote awareness of AIDS and HIV. Over the decades we have produced multiple compilation albums featuring artists such as The National, David Byrne, Bon Iver, tUnE-yArDs, Beirut, The Roots, Sade, Beck, and José González. In addition to these compilations, we have also produced concerts and films. One of our most recent projects, Dark Was The Night, received wide critical acclaim and praise from the fans of the many artists featured on the record.
This is not the final list – we'll continue to add more artists to the roster as they sign on to the project!
Twin Shadow is the nom de plume of Dominican-born George Lewis Jr. The troubled son of a hairdresser and a “teacher who lived many lives” (semi-professional football, massage therapy, film maker), his formative years were spent in suburban Florida. It was there that George made he first forays into music, experimenting with sound from the age of 14. He’s not looked back since. His most recent album, Confess, was released on July 10th, 2012 on 4AD.
Washed Out is the stage name of 28 year-old Atlanta-based songwriter and producer Ernest Greene. Long adored and critically lauded in the blog world, Greene first came to prominence in the summer of 2009 after unassumingly posting a handful of bedroom-recorded tracks to his Myspace page. His debut album, Within and Without, was released on July 12, 2011 and has received lots of critical acclaim.
José González is a Swedish-Argentine indie folk singer-songwriter and guitarist. González is also a member of the Swedish band Junip, along with Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn. He previously appeared on Dark Was The Night, collaborating with The Books to cover Nick Drake's "Cello Song".
Rubblebucket, a band led by the musical couple of front woman Kalmia Traver and bandleader/trumpeter Alex Toth, has spent the last four years building a reputation as a group that blurs the lines between psychedelic indie rock, upbeat dance, and radiant, left-field arrangements. The Brooklyn, NY by way of Boston and Vermont band has evolved into something that is "utterly post-genre—horns, synth, guitars, harmonies—a smile-inducing point on the tangent that connects Björk and Broken Social Scene", which is to say that you never know what you'll see or hear next.
Laurel Halo crafts lush, electronic avant-pop that is as theoretical as it is playful. An Ann Arbor, Michigan native and Brooklyn resident, Halo began playing piano at age six and added guitar and violin to her repertoire while still a child. However, she didn’t begin composing until she was 19, using not only the classical theory of her childhood but her fascination with translating geometric shapes like arcs and domes into music and the sounds she absorbed as a free-form DJ at the University of Michigan’s radio station WCBN as touchstones for her work. Her most recent album, Quarantine, was released in June 2012.
Robyn a Swedish pop singer known for her hits “Call Your Girlfriend”, “Dancing on My Own”, and “With Every Heartbeat”. The electro-pop star emerged in the late nineties, but gained mainstream success in recent years because of her dance-anthems, impressive live shows, and unique style. In 2011, the single “Dancing On My Own” was nominated at Grammy Awards for the category Best Dance Recording.
Glen Hansard is the Academy Award–winning principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for Irish group The Frames and one half of folk rock duo The Swell Season. His song, "Falling Slowly", co-written with Markéta Irglová, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2007. He released his first solo album, Rhythm and Repose, in June 2012.
Javelin is a band/production duo consisting of cousins George Langford and Tom Van Buskirk. The two started out rocking house parties and making mixtapes in Providence, RI, 2005. They moved operations to Brooklyn, NY in 2008 and have since made their distinctive mark on the ears of listeners and audiences alike. Javelin is currently working on new production and remixes, as well as finishing their sophomore album, due out this year.
Hot Chip is the music making partnership of Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Owen Clarke, Al Doyle and Felix Martin. The group, who hail from London, have been making electronic/dance music since 2000, and have released five studio albums since. The band is best known for their hit singles "Over and Over" (2006) and "Ready For The Floor" (2008).
Nico Muhly is a contemporary classical music composer who has worked and recorded with both classical and pop/rock/folk musicians, and is also known for his film scores. He is a frequent collaborator with artists such as Björk, Jónsi, and Grizzly Bear, and he has recently composed two operas. His upcoming premieres include commissions from the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and a new collaboration with choreographer Benjamin Millepied for New York City Ballet.
Owen Pallett is a composer, violinist, keyboardist, and vocalist. His violin-looping live project spawned several records under the moniker Final Fantasy, including the Polaris Prize-winning He Poos Clouds. He currently releases records under his own name, including 2010's Heartland.
Cut Copy is a synthpop band formed in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia, and made up of Dan Whitford (lead vocals/keys/guitar), Tim Hoey (bass/guitar), Mitchell Scott (drums) and Ben Browning (bass/synthesiser). Their sound is much in the vein of artists such as Daft Punk, drawing considerable influence from older bands such as New Order, Electric Light Orchestra and Kraftwerk.
Sandro Perri is a songwriter and producer of new music. Within the broad spectrum of his work are elements of pop, folk, electronic, dance, jazz, noise and rock. His latest LP, Impossible Spaces, experiments with new song and production beyond any of his previous efforts to date.
The Revival Hour is comprised of DM Stith, a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and John Mark Lapham of The Earlies and The Late Chord. Their first single, entitled "Hold Back", will be followed by an upcoming album release and tour.
Will Sheff is the frontman and founder for the critically acclaimed rock band Okkervil River (1998–present), and is also a solo artist, writer, and producer. His writing has been published in McSweeney's, and he was nominated at the 2011 Grammys for his liner notes to Roky Erickson's True Love Cast Out All Evil, an album he also produced.
sings, plays banjo and guitar and fiddle, draws comics and makes little video-stories. A musician who glides through unlikely set of genres from traditional folk to free jazz, Amidon has released three albums of radically re-worked folksongs and will put out a fourth early next year.
Ólöf Arnalds is an Icelandic singer. Her voice has been called "otherworldly" by The New York Times, "stunning" by SPIN, "bewitching" by Rolling Stone, "remarkable" by the NME, "ethereal" by Vanity Fair and "impossibly lovely" by Paste.
Devendra Banhart exploded on the international music scene in 2002 quickly winning a coterie of devoted fans as well as an unusually hefty amount of critical kudos right from the outset. Banhart’s most recent release is his label debut for Warner Brothers Records, What Will We Be; his artwork and packaging for the album has been nominated for a Grammy award.
Dan Boeckner is a Canadian singer, songwriter and guitarist. He currently fronts the indie rock band Wolf Parade and was previously a member of Atlas Strategic and Handsome Furs. He is also currently involved in a project called Divine Fits, with Spoon frontman Britt Daniel.
Chad VanGaalen is well known for rarely leaving his rickety house in Calgary, endlessly drawing, recording and making art. With his new release, Diaper Island, VanGaalen distills his approach, producing his most sonically cohesive album to date, and the closest thing he has done to a rock album.
Scissor Sisters took the music world by storm and had the biggest selling album of 2004 in the UK. Elaborate costumes and controversial lyrics have won them fans around the world. Hailing from the New York underground club scene, Jake Shears, Ana Matronic, Del Marquis and Babydaddy are currently working on promoting their fourth studio album Magic Hour.
Oh Mercy is an acoustic pop band from Melbourne, Australia. Their second album, Great Barrier Grief, earned them a nomination for a 2011 ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist – Album.
Thao with The Get Down Stay Down hails from San Francisco and consists of Thao Nguyen and Adam Thompson. They started making music with an indie-pop and folk vibe in 2005, and have since released three studio albums: Like Linen, We Brave Bee Stings and All, and Know Better Learn Faster.
The manufacturing costs for CDs would have made our budget even higher and thus our Kickstarter goal even more difficult to reach. We may look into CDs at a later time, but right now it is limited to digital downloads and vinyl. As soon as we know, you'll know!
The exact loft party date is TBD, but we are planning for Spring/Summer of 2013. As soon as we know, you'll know!
We are still exploring our options. The funding and production of the album depends on the Kickstarter's success, but we are looking into MP3s as well as lossless options. As soon as we know, you'll know!
We crunched numbers, then crunched them again, and $55,000 is the minimum we need to produce the album - that includes things such as paying the artists, booking studio time, getting artwork done for the merchandise, and making/shipping rewards like the vinyl. If you want to know an exact breakdown of how your donations are being utilized, feel free to message the Red Hot Team!
