WHAT IS THIS?

This is a biological conference called Science@SAFE. Presenters will report on their research from the SAFE Project in Borneo, the SAFE Project is an giant ecological experiment looking at the effects of deforestation and oil palm plantations.

I want to produce videos of these presentations (with slides), and also interviews with the researchers. The videos will allow everyone worldwide to hear about their work.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Research is not made accessible enough. Academics work incredibly hard to push the boundaries of what we know, and this is particularly important for climate science / environmental studies.

Understanding deforestation and the effects of palm oil plantations will help us save species, and reduce our overall impact on the rainforest.

WHY ME?

I worked at SAFE during my MRes for several months. It's a fantastic initiative that the whole world should hear about, and the science there is fascinating and varied.

I regularly produce video media for my day job and also creative side-projects. I have been to over 20 conferences producing videos like this.

WHY £500?

To hire a film crew, cover expenses, pay editors, admin, and kit cost would normally amount to well over £3000. I am doing this because I know it is a benefit to the researchers involved, and the SAFE Project.

This is the lowest estimate. To be totally transparent, if I don't end up spending the full £500 on expenses / accommodation, then the remainder will go to myself as payment - likely straight back into this sort of work. A freelancer would charge ~£50/hr for this work which would be £800 filming and £800 post production minimum. Taking the remainder of what might be <£100 is no biggie!

If I raise more than £500 then the above still applies. (Unless this thing goes totally viral in which case I'll have a think!)

WHY SHOULD I FUND THIS?

  • By funding this you'll be helping promote this research, and also the SAFE Project
  • You'll also indirectly be helping me demonstrate to other organisations that this kind of media output is important
  • It won't take a lot to make this a reality, so your help will go a long way
  • In about two months you will be able hear about some of this research from your chair at home, and actually experience the outputs for yourselves

I've made a bunch of videos about SAFE a while back, you can see them all below:

Risks and challenges

There are a lot of videos to make and film. The reality is a couple of very intense days of filming, and an even longer time spent with an editor making everything look good.

The main challenge is raising the funds to do it, I'll be asking for people's help to share this across social media.
