The First Record
The Shadowboxers have been writing and recording since we started playing in late 2009. We banged out our first three-song demo in a weekend a couple months after we'd started, and released an 8-song EP in June 2011. Still though, we have yet to really capture our sound and energy on a recording and we know it's time to do so.
The Recording Process
We've got three years of material that we've whittled down to 15 songs we think work as a cohesive representation of our band. Some are road-tested fan favorites that date back to that first recording session, others are brand spanking new. We've found a producer with a gorgeous new studio in Shreveport, LA that we are SO pumped to work with; we think he'll really bring out the best in us and in these songs. We can't promise that all 15 tracks will make the final cut, but we also wouldn't be surprised if they do. What we can promise is that with the funds that you provide, we will have all the tools and resources we need to make the record that we have all been hearing in our heads since we started.
Where Your Donations Are Going
We'll be spending close to 3 weeks in Shreveport recording and mixing our basic tracks. That alone requires:
- Renting living space
- Booking studio time
- Paying the producer and audio engineer for their time and work
Those three things, especially paying those at the studio, will be very costly. Our producer and engineer are highly experienced professionals. Even with our high goal, most of our Kickstarter funds will go toward paying these individuals. The rest of the funds will go toward the following:
- Hiring pro musicians to compose and record horn, string, and percussion parts.
- Hiring someone to master our album (another very expensive aspect of the recording process).
- Paying our friend Max Glaser (http://maxglaser.com) for the awesome album art he's concocting.
- Paying for replication of the album (both CD's and Vinyl).
- Digital and hardcopy distribution of the album (i.e. iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, your favorite record store, etc).
- Promotion of the album (and eventual album release tour)!
Because of all these very necessary expenses, we would love to raise more than our posted goal to ensure that we don't put ourselves in debt!
Now It's Your Turn!
We've got the songs, we've got the personnel, we've got everything mapped out....now all we need is your help! We can't tell you how much we appreciate all the support you have given us so far: on the road, on the internet, at home in Atlanta. You've made us feel like we really matter to you and that we have something to offer. We'd like to really prove it to you by knocking this album out of the park. With your donations, we can make this record a reality and take our band to the next level.
Thanks for taking the time to check out our project. You'll be contributing to something that will be really special. See you on the album release tour!
Much love and other goodies,
Adam, Ben, Jaron, Matt, and Scott
I see all these other fans gettin' thanked on Facebook and Twitter on the day that I donate. So why haven't I seen my name yet??!
We PROMISE we haven't forgotten about you! We've been overwhelmed by the amount of people who responded so quickly to this project and didn't want to simply cram 100+ people into one big "thank you!" We felt that that just didn't seem very personal and would've de-valued the importance of each donation. So we've been thanking folks in small clusters (in the order that they donated) so that we can flaunt EVERY name. Yes, that means it may take a few days for your name to wind up on our page (and for that, we apologize) but only because we value each and every person who helps us out.
