About

For a minority language to thrive, it needs a great community, and the Irish language has such a great community, both online and off. I want give people a fuller Irish language experience when they create and use blogs and other websites using the open-source Wordpress content management system.

Fully one quarter of the web runs on Wordpress, an open-source application that makes creating beautiful and engaging blogs and websites easy. It's already available in many languages, but up till now Irish was not among them - but this project is going to change that!

The core Wordpress system contains some 40,000 words, for which I've gotten initial estimates for a full translation as well as proof-reading of translations already done. Any money above and beyond the translation of the core Wordpress system will go towards translating additional Wordpress resources, such as popular themes and plugins.

I don't have the skill to translate the system myself, but I know people who do. My translator (Bríd) is fully accredited with Foras na Gaeilge, and I've worked with her many times in the past. Bríd is professional, efficient, and accurate - exactly what I want the Irish language Wordpress to be.

Most importantly of all, once translated, the Irish language version of Wordpress becomes free for everyone around the world to use in their own Wordpress sites, giving the option of a full Irish language experience to thousands of sites.

Risks and challenges

My role in this project is purely as an organiser - the people I engage to do the actual translation are much more qualified than I am to do the real work! My challenge is technical - I take the translation and integrate it into the Wordpress framework. However with over 20 years' experience as a software developer, I feel this is an aspect of the project I'll be able to handle.
