ADCAN was co-founded by Brydon Gerus, Dan Heighes and Deborah Casswell who met while working together on Apple.
At the time, Brydon was shooting proactive films to build a director's reel. He entered a competition with an ad for a big brand and won a trip to the Cannes Lions Festival. The pink wine glow soon faded and he came home questioning the whole awards industry. Surely there’s a more socially impactful way for talented people to get seen than advertising sugar water!
The idea for ADCAN was born. Combine these key communities and everyone wins.
1) The best companies in the production community (our judges and workshop partners).
2) The best emerging talent in the creative industry (our contestants).
3) The charities trying to make the world better (6 new ones each year).
Our driving force is entirely in service of good causes and creative talent. We carefully curate our roster of charities and work with them hand in hand to develop their briefs. We scour the globe for the most talented up and coming filmmakers and animators and point this diverse creative force to the briefs. Then, the best shops in the production community get first looks at these emerging talents and take the opportunity to provide guidance via our educational winners workshop programs. It’s WIN, WIN, WIN!

ABOUT OUR PROJECT:
ADCAN has been UK only for the last 3 years and as the world gets weirder and weirder taking CREATIVITY AS A FORCE FOR GOOD global is more important now then ever.
Up to this point, ADCAN has run purely on good vibes and an entire global community of passionate industry leaders and volunteers donating their time and talents to addressing the big issues we all face, while at the same time nurturing the next generation of creative talent.
Here’s what folks have to say about ADCAN:
- Ezrael Alem, ADCAN winner
"ADCAN is a welcome route to support and guidance for up-and-coming talent: the lifeblood of our industry".
- Daniel Kleinman, Director of James Bond 007 Titles & Founder of Rattling Stick
Each year we curate and execute a programmatic year of networking events, speaker series, parties, and ultimately our 2 day educational winners workshops and awards show for our winners.
This year we will be holding our 4th awards gala and workshop series at the Mill in Los Angeles, CA on October 19 and 20th to celebrate and award the best films made for our charity partners.

THE CHARITY FILM BRIEFS FOR 2017:
WERK FOR PEACE
WERK for Peace was set up in response to the Pulse nightclub massacre. It uses dance as a form of activism, empowering the queer community to heal, express love and reclaim their space through movement. WERK needs a film to encourage donations to expand and hire staff and also to encourage more people to participate in this beautiful organization.
GA provides free solar panels to low-income homes. The benefit is three-fold. Families save 80% on their energy bills, renewable energy reduces reliance on harmful fossil fuels and people in need of opportunities are trained to install the panels providing employment. This brief asks you to convince skeptical Latino communities to take advantage of this unbelievable service.
HELEN BAMBER FOUNDATION
HBF delivers a compassionate response to survivors of torture or extreme human cruelty. The world is in the grip of one of the worst forced displacement crises ever. Refugees and Asylum seekers are often reduced to numbers in the news. This brief invites you to challenge the way people see asylum and refugees with a surprising and provocative creative film.
It’s 100 years since women won the vote, but complete gender equality is still a long way off. The Fawcett Society works with politicians, academics and activists to push for equality in government, the workplace and even the internet. This film should celebrate 100 years of the vote but drive membership by reminding people there is important work yet to be done.
NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS ASSOCIATION
Over 30 million people in the US suffer with eating disorders. NEDA’s programs focus on early intervention, raise awareness of the risks and ensure people receive the help they need to recover. This brief asks you to challenge the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding eating disorders so that more people feel comfortable reaching out for help.
HEALTH & WELLBEING:
Every year 18 million tons of food is wasted in the UK. But at the same time 4.7 million Brits regularly go a whole day without food. City Harvest rescues fresh food going to waste from supermarkets, restaurants and wholesale and distributes it to London charities who feed the hungry. This film must raise the profile of CH and also raise much needed funds.
JOIN THE MOVEMENT:
Your donations to ADCAN supports our 6 charities and the next generation of filmmakers while nurturing an industry wide culture for doing good. If we can continue to grow our global community with creativity as a force for good, the next generation of industry will have it as part of it’s DNA and the world will be better for it!
Our contestants fund their own film entries so we’d like to make sure they can get to LA for the educational workshops and awards gala at no cost to them. This is the main thrust of our fiscal needs this year.
We are anticipating the need to travel and accommodate up to 12 filmmakers from around the world. Your donation will also help to cover the day-to-day running of ADCAN from server space to the legal fees of opening ADCAN to the global creative community.
