The sequel to the 2008 Tron/Battlezone inspired, first-person tank action game!
About this project
Tank Universal1 appeared on Steam and other selected outlets in 2008.
"An arcade tank shooter with oodles of variables and that special addictive quality that pulls you back again and again" - IGN [7/10]
Inspired by the shapes and spaces of Tron and the gameplay of Battlezone, the game was heavy on action. Shells arc in, explosions batter your tank as you judge an enemy's distance and lob shell after shell their way.
Every level was different but in combat the player was just one unit amongst many on the battlefield.
Tank Universal 2 (TU2) is now under development!

Support the game on Steam Greenlight!
(NOTE: $69,000NZD = approx $45,000USD)
Easy to use FPS controls. WASD for movement, mouse look to swing your turret about. Easy to pick up and play.
HUD. All the information you need at a glance. Objectives listed on-screen. Radar displays nearby targets + direction to objectives.
Dodge incoming shells. To stay still is to be an easy target so keep moving. Shells have exaggerated arcs - they can be avoided if you have enough distance and skill. Check your radar and use the sights and sounds of the battlefield to gauge when to pull back or when to charge in and deal damage.
Return fire. As enemy tanks fire at you, return the favour! Judge distance and travel and send your own shells arcing their way. If there's time, hold down the fire button for a charged shot to do more damage.
Upgrade your tank. Bonuses both permanent and not so permanent if you lose your tank in battle. Upgrades include rockets and drop turrets. Can you keep the same tank for the entire game?
Shields, systems and armour. Your tank has shields but once those are gone, core systems will begin to take damage. Jump out of your tank for a quick spot of repair or jet-pack over to a new tank and take control. Additional protection can be had by collecting armour shards for extra 'bolt-on' protection.
Attack / defend / capture. Take the fight to the enemy or defend your base from epic waves of enemy tanks and other vehicles. Each level is different and presents different challenges.
Nineteen levels are planned in the base game. See stretch goals below for further options.
New terrain-gen algorithm means levels twice the size of the first game with improved graphics. Larger levels allowing for more free-form play.
Bigger battles. More units each pursuing their own goals means thrilling assault, capture or defend the base style missions.
Take control of light / medium / heavy tanks. Decide according to your preferred play-style.
Eject and take to the air. Go on-foot when you need a spot of repairs completed. Or use the jet pack to escape a battle gone astray. Fly above the carnage before swooping down to take control of another teammate's tank.
Music. New licensed tracks from Arteria3d.com. Music just right for Tank Universal's exciting digital world.
The digital world - a huge slab of terrain floating in the void. The metropolis sits at one end, a mystery at the other.
A mysterious threat known only as Gorgon, has crossed the void and is colonising the sector. His troops have taken the metropolis and pushed the Resistance out into the wastelands. Now they must bet their survival on a desperate journey north in the hope of stopping the very source of the invasion.
Meanwhile, in the real world. Meet George.
George is not your usual video game hero. Retired and living quietly in a small village, he is an unlikely candidate for a digital pioneer. He feels life has no more use for him and despairs at his abandonment by the only family he has left, his son.
But George is about to realise his fate is far more entwined with the digital world's troubles than he may care to realise.
Stuff for your screen, your wall, your desk.
Not too far into the game, the player will have the opportunity to visit a strange and unusual structure. An enormous spire, ancient and mysterious, sits brooding on a wide plain.
Sneaking into its interior, the player climbs via jet-pack. Each level reveals the names of the structure's mysterious masters (KS backers). Higher and higher, onwards towards the top. But perhaps the spire is not slumbering quite as deeply as the player expected...

TU2 has seen a lot of development over the past few years. The digital world is better realised than when shown in the first game, gameplay has been improved and new systems implemented.
However there is still considerable development needed before the game can be sent out into the world as a finished product.
This is where you can help.
Funding raised through Kickstarter will ensure the following:
- that the AI is appropriate and competent for all gameplay styles
- extend the game beyond the 3 demo levels, to a final 19
- introduce set piece events and a definitive ending to George's story
- upgrade the environment to include more components and tilesets
- move development to a full-time basis
- complete the game.
Phil Jones - Phil has been a graphic design professional for over 17 years now.
Living and working in Hamilton, New Zealand - about 30 minutes from Hobbiton (never been there). He is currently hard at work on his second major video game; the 'imaginatively' named Tank Universal 2.
A passionately creative person but a bit of an asshole, Phil enjoys a spot of video-gaming, perusing Reddit, amateur stargazing and 'testing' beer for flavour. Favorite games: Total War series (patched), FTL (played way too much of this one), The Mass Effect Trilogy (ending could have been a tad better?), Gothic RPG's 1-3 + Risen 1. N.B. just kidding about being an asshole - hopefully. Not kidding about the beer tasting though.
Again, many thanks to all who choose to support this Kickstarter project. I look forwards to working with you all.
Risks and challenges
Game dev is hard work and time consuming. Meanwhile there's always uncertainty. After all, life is what happens while you're making plans (or developing games) and things can take a turn.
But with one game under my belt and TU2 well along in its development, I have the utmost confidence that with your support, TU2 will see its journey completed. Once again we'll bring the TU world's virtual tank action to your screens, this time bigger and better than ever.
So thank you again for your interest and support. I can't wait to collaborate with the game's backers in making the game we all want and deserve!
