About

Moon Festival is bringing the moon to London in 2019.

Join our growing community to celebrate the moon and its powerful role in all our lives. Three days of live performances, contemporary jazz and house dance, tarot readers, spoken word, stargazing, storytelling and more.

We’re honoured to welcome novelist Margaret Atwood to deliver a keynote lecture as part of a series on the moon, women & society, curated by rising literary star Irenosen Okojie. With your support we can gather together thousands of Londoners from all corners of the capital to create a festival unlike any other.

WHY THE MOON?

“The moon is a stone and the sky is full of deadly hardware, but oh God, how beautiful anyway.” says Margaret Atwood in the Handmaid’s Tale.

Source of light, icon, object of worship, beacon of hope, commercial enterprise, the moon has held a central role in the human imagination across ages and cultures.

Astronauts have walked on its surface, artists have drawn inspiration from its glow and farmers follow its cycle for a good harvest. Some people let go of the past as the moon wanes, others raise arms in the wake of its red eclipse. The strength of its light alters the behaviours of animals – even the sea falls under the spell of its magnetism.

The 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing gives us the perfect opportunity to revisit this cultural icon and explore why the Moon is so relevant today. The last few years have been tough for London, whatever you stand for, and the next ten months won’t be much easier. Today, more than ever, we need something that excites us, unites us and makes us put our differences aside. The moon can do that.

Wherever you are in the world, we need your support to make it happen.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

“London is a captivating place to be. i’m pleased that the moon festival team are raising the profile of our city at night and encouraging Londoners to get outside, meet one another and take time to appreciate the natural beauty of the moon.”Amy Lamé, London Night Czar - Mayor's Office

The Moon Festival will take place at General Gordon Square in Woolwich, in the heart of Greenwich, the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). It’s the ideal location to host an awe-inspiring event encouraging people to look up into the sky and consider the mysteries of the cosmos.

With its Royal Observatory and its dependence on the daily ebb and flow of the tide, Greenwich has always had a special connection to the moon.

London needs the Moon Festival. It’s a city with over 300 languages where 55% of the population define themselves as non-white British. Within London, Woolwich meets and surpasses these statistics. It’s a highly diverse and, because of this, culturally alive part of London.

Its shifting landscape is characterised by a new creative district launching in 2019 and Crossrail opening in 2018. Woolwich is a rapidly changing neighbourhood, and as put by as Moon Festival’s Diversity Officer Rasheeda Page Muir, “It’s imperative that local communities are able to shape some of that change. Across different class, age, racial and religious backgrounds, all communities in Woolwich are involved in this exciting project and not because they have to, but because doing so will make Moon Festival infinitely better.”

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Moon Festival is will illuminate Woolwich’s streets with a diverse and dynamic range of performers and artists, astronomers and a lunar garden.

We’re thrilled to host a lecture series on Maverick Women and the Moon curated by rising literary star Irenosen Okojie. It’s with great honour that we’ll welcome author of The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood, to deliver a keynote lecture on Arcana XVIII in the Tarot deck, the Goddess Fortuna, myth and magic.

‘Founder of Attica Blues, Blacktronica and Run Dem Crew Charlie Dark has signed up to host a large-scale club night and poet Inua Ellams will be leading a storytelling ‘moon walk’ around the borough. There are also plans for a lunar garden that only comes to life at night, tarot readings, talisman-making and moon art on the pavements. The main performance will see all the lights in the square switched off as an audience of 3,000 people quietly listen to a story about the moon."

-----------------------------------------------------

A big institution's monthly spend for this kind of project at the stage we're at would average around £25000. We're light and nimble and can do it for much less but our monthly expenditure is still just under £6000 a month.

We've set our target to £11,500 because Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform but the real cost to keep the team going for 4 months is actually £24000.

 -----------------------------------------------------

WHO WILL HELP US MAKE IT HAPPEN?

Meet our friends, our family. They've got our backs. We've got theirs. As well as programming and commissioning with museums, universities and arts organisations, we’re working with Nepalese communities in Woolwich to unveil the presence of the Moon in ancient Nepalese literature, training young people to become the broadcasters of tomorrow, primary school children to create waterlilies out of recycled materials, Muslim groups to disclose the importance of the Moon in Eid.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is that we won't be able to raise as much money as we would like to. To mitigate this risk we have built the project a bit like an onion: a core activity that will happen no matter what and a bunch of great activities to complement it that will depend on how much money we raise.
