About this project
What is Spaceman about?
Spaceman is a coming of age story following a boy who has trouble accepting that he cannot fix his family's dysfunction. With the aid of his imaginary Spaceman friend, he comes to terms with his parent's tensions after an unfortunate event.
It was important for me to keep the film very grounded and realistic looking. The story is told from the boy's point of view, so even though we are playing with make believe elements, I wanted the viewer to see and perceive the Spaceman and the parents just like the boy would see them. There is nothing magical about the Spaceman in the boy's mind—he is just his friend. The boy hears the parents speak in a garbled language—he understands the situation, but does not comprehend the details or circumstances.
Who are you?
Writer, Director: Chloe Lee
Producers: Chloe Lee, Zach Meyer
Director of Photography: Andrei Rimski
The project is produced through Movette Pictures, a company I founded in Brooklyn, NY. This is the first narrative film I have taken on, so I am very excited to see it succeed! I am also currently a co-producer on a feature documentary coming out this year called "American Dream", a project from the producers of films such as Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine and Sicko: americandreamthemovie.com
What is next for Spaceman?
We have just finished shooting in Mt. Tremper in upstate New York and are nearing completion. I have collaborated with a very talented group of people who have provided support from the early planning, screenplay, casting calls, and all the way through our action-packed three day filming. Now, I'm inviting more people to be a significant part of the film project to see "Spaceman" come to life.
Why should I fund Spaceman?
Fortunately, I have been able to raise funds through the shoot, but now I need to raise addition funding for post-production and festival costs. It is already a great project from inception to the filming, but to bring it to another level we are taking the audio to a sound studio to do extensive design work. Right now all the sound we collected sounds great, but I can't wait to enhance it.
Ok, I'm in!
We are very lucky to have some wonderful original limited-edition artwork donated and specially created for this project.
Also, a big thank you to all the participating artists for their wonderful works!
David Kassan is an amazing and internationally renowned realist painter, who is represented by Gallery Henoch in Chelsea. Recently, a portrait of his mother has been exhibited at the Smithsonian: www.davidkassan.com
Watch this little video I quickly threw together of David painting this Spaceman alla prima:
B.D. White is a Brooklyn-based stencil artist who has a passion for street art. If you're in NYC, you may have seen some of his work around the Williamsburg, BK: www.bdwhite.net
B.D. White's limited edition custom color Spaceman posters ran out, so we have unlocked some of his streetart in poster form. And of course you can choose your own color! Photos of the works on the street are below followed by the posters.
Maria De Los Angeles is an impressionist painter residing in Brooklyn, NY and has recently been accepted into the Yale Fine Art Master's program beginning this Fall semester: www.mdlafineart.com/
I made this linoleum handprint in black and white ($30) and also one that's hand painted in color on a brown background ($40). www.chylee.com
Risks and challenges
We have already overcome most of our risks and challenges! With a successful fundraiser this project will be completed soon!
Scheduling, weather, and funding have all been issues right through filming. I am extremely impressed at how everyone had such an awesome attitude and contributed to overcoming these issues. Problems were addressed and solved quickly and in the most graceful way possible. Due to freezing weather before the filming we had a cracked water pipe which resulted in having to rent portable toilets. And of course in this age of technology there was no cell phone service in our remote filming locale. I could not have asked for a better team.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
