About

It’s election 2016, but you’re not Rand Paul, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, or any of the other candidates. You’re you, sitting wherever you are, with whatever skills you have to bring to the table. In The Campaign, you’re trying to become President of the United States - those are some pretty high stakes. If we have to explain how high the stakes are, you probably shouldn’t be running for President. The future of the free world depends on you.

Gameplay takes 60-90 minutes, and you’ll spend that time manipulating people on both your team and the other team, winning states through wild, creative means as you work your way through the 63-card deck. When you’re not competing for states, you might be filibustering through your opponent’s turn, turning a Republican state into a Democratic state, or blundering your way through a Today Show interview.

In the end, the team with more electoral votes wins and the person with the most electoral votes on the winning team becomes the POTUS. It’s a game best played with a bottle of wine (or an equally attractive non-alcohol beverage) after a long day at work, as you and your friends see sides of each other that you didn’t know existed.

General Gameplay

The Campaign is a game for 4-6 players where the candidates split as evenly as possible into two parties: The Democrats and The Republicans. Once teams are decided, each player takes $120 in campaign funds to use at his or her discretion to enter, or not enter, races in different states. Each player uses his or her turn to draw a card from the "Campaign" deck and performs the action printed on the card - whether it be collecting money, drawing a game card, or playing a PAC card on another player.

Players continue to draw cards until they get halfway through the deck, at which point they will be prompted to "poll" and tally up the number of electoral votes each team and individual has up until that point.

Gameplay continues as normal until the last five cards in the "Campaign Deck" remain. These are the Victory States (California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois) and they are worth the most electoral votes. These states are decided in a blind auction, creating tensions between friends, deceitful dialogue, and tenuous alliances. Once these cards have been awarded, the electoral votes are tallied, and a winning party and POTUS is announced.

The Cards

There are three different decks of cards in The Campaign. The main "Campaign Deck," the "Party Games Deck," and the "Battle Games Deck."

The "Campaign Deck" contains 63 cards and drives the game play. This is the deck that candidates take turns drawing from. Depending on the card that they draw, they may have to draw a card from the "Party Game" deck or the "Battle Game" deck.

In the main Campaign Deck, there are three kinds of cards that you can draw:

1. State Cards - These are divided into Battle States, Giveaway States, and Party States. If it’s a Party State, one party draws from the "Party Card" deck. The members of that party will be prompted to do something ridiculous like give a speech about why we need a military base on the moon or define a term such as a “Handsy Eisenhower.” If it’s a Battle State, any player can buy into the race using their money, and the participating players engage in any one of a number of competitions drawn from the "Battle Card" deck; one might win by having the best estimate of number of TSA employees. The winner keeps the State Card and gets the corresponding number of electoral votes.

2. PAC Cards - These are fun power ups that each player can use against other players. When drawn, these can stay face down in the candidate's hand until they are played. One can play a Recall Card to force another player to put back the card they pulled, a Filibuster Card to cause another player to lose their turn, or a Socialist Card to collect money from the other players.

3. Press Cards - These are part of the game that lampoons politics; they are events that might happen during your campaign loosely based on events from real presidential campaigns, mirroring the unpredictable nature of the process of running for office. You could sue a dead NAVY Seal, invite Pitbull to your rally, or save the flag on national TV. It’s all up to chance.

Winning the Game: Your party has to end up with the most electoral votes to win as a team, and you have to have the most electoral votes within the winning party to become the President. The best part is deciding when to prioritize teamwork and when to screw your own party members over! Stay quick and on your toes, though - the last five cards in the deck are not only the most valuable, but won through a blind auction using any money you have left.

We are Eric, Eric, and Max - three Stanford students who love board games. We have little knowledge of the intricacies of politics, so we naturally decided we were qualified to create a politically-themed board game - The Campaign. We’re completely new to the world of creating games, which drives our enthusiasm for the project as we finish our senior year of college and stare into the forbidding unknown of “real people” life. As seniors in Stanford's Product Design program, we have learned a process that has allowed us to develop such a game -through rigorous research, user testing, and many, many iterations.

The most popular board games at school were completely strategy-based or only focused on humor. The users we interviewed complained about a lack of opportunity to showcase their creativity in either format, so we created a ridiculous party game that centers around creativity and humor but has just enough strategy to keep the game interesting all the way through.

We noted that community in post-grad life takes on a new level of importance as recent graduates cement their friend groups outside of work. We hope our board game creates a bond between friend groups both new and old through allowing people to open up and show their creative side. We think it’s important that the game is different every time, creating a new experience with each play and exposing unforeseen facets of players’ personalities

By supporting our campaign, you will help cover our initial manufacturing costs. If our Kickstarter is successful, we will be able to manufacture a 1,500 board games to deliver to everyone who backs our "Campaign."

Risks and challenges

Manufacturing a board game comes with a number of challenges, particularly, we've found it difficult to manufacture a smaller run of our games to meet the need of the Kickstarter community. Regardless of whether or not we meet our Kickstarter goal, we would like to manufacture and deliver copies of The Campaign to those who want them.

We have an incredible network of mentors and advisors who are excited to help us along the way. We would not be here without them!

We also wanted to send a huge thank you to our friend, Cynthia Truong, for the artwork featured on each of our cards.
