I want a giant neoprene game mat that covers my entire table, is really thick and plush, and doesn't have a print so I can bring it out for every game. I want my kitchen table to have a luxurious game table feel, without buying a $2,000 gaming table.
The game mat I was looking for simply didn't exist. That is the reason for this Kickstarter. We want to produce mats that will fit most common table sizes. And in this Kickstarter we are also offering custom cut sizing, something you will get nowhere else and may not be offered again anytime soon. So, you can get a precise fit to your table, transforming your dining table into a game table.
Gaming Mat Features:
- Protect your table
- Protect your board game components
- Thick neoprene mat with nylon surface
- Plain colors work with every game
- Available in common table sizes, up to large kitchen table (75 x 39)
- Custom sizing up to 80 x 50
- Easy roll up storage + straps & support tube
Straps and Support Tube: The mats are very big! In order to store and transport them neatly, we'll provide a tube to roll the mat around and then a carrying strap. The strap will have two wrap points to secure the mat and a strap between those two for transportation.
Colors: Currently Black, Forest Green, and Burgundy available. More in the stretch goals.
Thickness: Most playmats on the market are 1-2mm. We're now up to 5mm! The surface material is nylon.
Sizes: We are making four standard sizes available, intended to fit common sizes of different types of tables. The sizes are based on averages of those available tables and assume some limited exposed table space on the edges; you should measure your table before assuming a certain fit. If you’re really classy, you may also get custom cut dimensions using the custom cut reward tiers.
Large Dining Table (75 in x 39 in) | Retail: $130 | KS Price: $105
5-Piece Dining Table (46 in x 27 in) | Retail: $60 | KS Price: $48
This is a small rectangular style of table that would come with four chairs in a set (hence 5-piece). If you have a round or square dining table, see below.
Round/Card Table (32 in x 32 in) | Retail: $68 | KS Price: $54
This will fit a collapsible, square card table, as well as most round and square dining tables. It is 44.25 in diagonally if you are checking for fit on your round table.
Folding Table (59 in x 25.5 in) | Retail: $75 | KS Price: $60
Most collapsible tables (common in gaming spaces and conventions) are five or six feet long. This will fit both comfortably.
Custom Size Reward Tiers: You'll just provide the two dimensions, up to the maximum size for your reward tier... then we cut it to that size.
One note on the custom cut mats is that the dimensions provided are based on the sheet sizes received from the factory. Those sizes are sold as "at least" a certain size. For example, the factory may say the sheet will be at least 50 inches wide. But when it arrives may actually be 52 inches.
We plan on waiting until the sheets are received and if they are a little bigger, we will expand the range for the custom tiers. It would only be by a few inches, if any at all. But we want to pass that extra real estate on to you if at all possible.
Pricing: The prices for the standard sized mats are 20% off the expected retail! The custom cut prices allow for the time and expense of hand cutting your special mat and shipping it to your door.
This means you can get a custom fit mat for about the price of the retail standard sizes! I using exclamation points because it's exciting! We want this Kickstarter to be an actual opportunity to get a deal and not just an elaborate pre-order.
Logo Options: By popular demand, we can screen the logo onto the back of the mat, as some gamers want a pristine surface for their games. I can get on board with that. An unobscured play surface is one of the core reasons for this campaign! But, we selfishly still want the logo on there.
The printing on the rubber back is, admittedly, not as attractive as on the nylon, but that's why it's up to you! This preference will be collected in the backer survey. This will definitely not be an option on the retail mats, so get 'em now!
Here are the stretch goal details and future goals:
- More Colors: Given sufficient volume, we'll be able to offer more colors. Currently, we have enough volume to offer Black, Burgundy,, Navy Blue, and Forest Green.
- Thicker! Up to 5mm thick neoprene
- Gaming Cups: You haven't lived until you've corralled your bits with little cups. Am I overstating this? No, I'm not. No more messy piles of coins and tokens or (shamefully) playing directly out of the box insert. We'll start with a set of three cups and increase to six. They will be multicolored so you can color match the tokens to the cups. You know you want to.
- Laser Cut Corners: To start, we will be mechanically cutting the corners with a corner rounding press. It does a nice job, but there's a reason laser-precision is a term. As a later stretch goal we'll get lasers! This will give a more precision corner than the mechanical cut corner. And we don't want to cut corners. Except for all the corners we'll be cutting.
Early in the pricing plan, we are overpaying on neoprene. But we would really like to get to a high enough volume to where we are able to give everyone the gaming cups to complete your gaming set! But, if we don't get there...
You can still get your hands on a 4 cup set. Just add $6 to your pledge! That wasn't a request. Do it! Colors are to be determined.
If you would like to order multiple mats, just add the prices of the mats together, back under the largest reward tier that you are ordering, and you can detail which mats and dimensions you need once it's survey/fulfillment time.
"I’d honestly never thought about buying a mat like this before – but now that I have one, I don’t know if I’d ever choose to play without it so long as the mat is nearby." ~Dale Yu, OpinonatedGamers.com
"It'll fit any game that will fit on your table. It protects your table, and your favorite games." ~Brian's Got Game
You Use It Like This:
Shipping: Because of the length and weight of the mats, international shipping arrangements are not a cost effective option right now. Sorry, other countries! We may try to push into international markets in the future based on demand. If you'd like to be notified when/if this happens, visit our notifications page.
Risks and challenges
If we get sufficient quantities, we can get our own neoprene order put on a cargo ship from the factory overseas and pick it up state side. This will take some time to arrange and to ship. Once received, we can begin fulfilling orders immediately. But this supposes a very large order!
If we get a low quantity, we'd still like to proceed, hence the low threshold on this project. But it does make us dependent on a 3rd party to include us in their next neoprene order, which only happens every few months and ads an extra middle-man. But with this low quantity, there will also be less orders to fulfill, so that part will go more quickly.
Ultimately, this is the only problem left to be solved, and we can't figure it out until we know how big the project will be. In any case, we've set the fulfillment expectation way out to accommodate a possible hangup in getting the materials.
Mat colors: The exact colors of the mats are not pictured as we cannot guarantee a certain hue. The colors may vary slightly depending on what factory produces them, and our source will depend on funding.
Mat Sizes: Neoprene may expand or contract slightly with temperature and age. These effects should be minimized because of the thickness of the material. Although they will be cut with precision instruments, it is unrealistic to expect a machine level of precision on a big floppy piece of rubber. Mats will be cut accurately at room temperature and then shipped, but a tolerance of up to 1/4 inch is possible in larger mat sizes. I say this not because I expect there to be variance, but because I can see one person in my future demanding a new mat because they said 79 inches and the mat they received is 78.8!
Royal We: If you've made it this far, you may be wondering, “Why does this guy keep calling himself by a plural pronoun?” Because I'm using the Royal We, and I've dubbed myself the King of Game Mats.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
