Oxen. Plough. Bicycle.  is the final book designed and published by Jack Werner Stauffacher at the Greenwood Press. It was completed and printed shortly before Jack's death in late 2017.

Jack Stauffacher was one of the pre-eminent letterpress printer/book-designers of San Francisco. His career spanned nearly eight decades, during which he produced landmark editions of Plato’s Phaedrus and Horace’s Odes, as well as the definitive history of the typeface Kis/Janson. He designed a wealth of beautiful books for Stanford University Press and the Book Club of California, among others. His placement of text on a page was always perfect, incorporating the spirit of modernism with the traditions of classic typography. At the end of a 500-year tradition of letterpress printing, he used his skills to carry on both the craft of printing and the transmission of intellectual ferment that printing was born to empower.

Photographer Dennis Letbetter, a long-time friend of Jack's and a collaborator with him on projects over 30 years, paid the printer's bill to make sure that Oxen. Plough. Bicycle. would appear in tangible printed form while Jack was still alive to see it. This campaign will raise the money to cover the printing bill.

120 copies were printed on Mohawk Superfine Soft White 80lb paper in a portrait format of seven-and-a-half x eleven inches (12 x 29cm), bound in flexible soft covers with generous cover flaps. Thirty-two black-and-white photographs were scanned and edited by Dennis Letbetter; thirty dated and undated entries were typeset in a digital version Nicholas Kis types.

This book is a meditation and a delight. It is finely made in a limited edition. It is made to be held and read, perused again an again over time. It is a fitting culmination to the publishing career of Jack Werner Stauffacher.

A Clear Eye : These photographs of the 1950s were made with a sharp & economical eye, the camera raised for an occasional exposure, only twenty-six rolls of film in three years. I'm tempted to say an amateur eye, but that would be wrong. Jack Stauffacher's pictures rest comfortably on the shoulders of his beloved masters of Italian neorealist cinema. His is that magical confluence in photography of the thing seen & the well-seen thing.  — Dennis Letbetter

14 June | Muted colors & coffee at Impruneta when evening bells break this hilltown stillness of fresh cypress.

10 August | Rode out of Francesca's Arezzo — each ascent & descent is isolated as the  west wind rises & transformation warms the valley below.

23 May | Ploughing the intricate event as oxen mingle a breathing labor — this plough, this earth summons our trust.

A copy of "Oxen. Pough. Bicycle"

"Oxen. Plough. Bicycle." by Jack W. Stauffacher is composed of his photographs and diary entries made when he was living in Tuscany for three years in the 1950s. His photographic vision was informed by Italian neo-realist cinema, and all these photographs made during his peregrinations on his bicycle. His diary entries are terse and well-observed poetic prose: words evocative and suggestive more than explicit.

This is the last book of one of the great book designers. It is the only book of his very well-seen photographs of a long-lost postwar Tuscany. The book is his most revealing meditation on issues close to him, of the wisdom of the farmers and the beauty of their agrarian land use and architecture. Having worked on several versions of this book since the ’50s, he considered this the perfect realization and the final statement he wanted to make in book form after a lifetime in the book arts.
