In Norse mythology, the giant fire-breathing wolf Fenrir, son of Loki, was ordered restrained by the god Odin. Bound to a great boulder by an enchanted, unbreakable chain, Fenrir waits for Ragnarok, when he will finally break free from his chains to participate in the great battle of the Gods, which will ultimately bring about the world's end and subsequent rebirth.
The story of Fenrir provides a wealth of inspiration for us as artists. The imagery of the wolf is personal and meaningful for many, and the associated death and rebirth mythology is a powerful concept. Fire allows us the opportunity to bring Fenrir to life; to create not just a flat, cold shape, but an organic being that expels fire, an essential element of life, with his every breath. It is with these things in mind that we are embarking on the construction of our own representation of Fenrir. Nine feet tall and wrought of stainless steel, Fenrir will stand upon his rock in the desert at Burning Man, looking over the crowd with his blue flame eyes, breathing fire and waiting for Ragnarok and his chance to break free.
While we are excited to create an amazing piece of public art and share the legend of Fenrir with the world, the primary goals of Project Fenrir are community and education. Nearly everyone on the Fenrir team is at the beginning of their creative journey: new to metal working, new to pyrotechnic effects, new to each other in many cases, and new to the experience of creating an elaborate and sophisticated work of art from beginning to end. This collaborative community of committed artists will bring Fenrir to life while gaining skills, experience, and relationships that they will carry forward with them on their individual creative paths throughout their lives.
Fenrir is a labor of love and a very personal project for those participating in his creation. To that end, much of the funding necessary to bring him to life has already been secured through the team. We have already constructed the basic form of Fenrir's rock and have begun construction of Fenrir himself; however, we still need help to bring Fenrir fully to life! We need additional funding in order to construct and install the fire effects that will breathe life in to the cold metal body of our wolf. Raw hardware, propane systems, fuel supplies, and transportaton to/from the Nevada desert and storage costs will need to be funded so that Fenrir may take his place among the community at Burning Man. With the appropriate level of funding, we will also be able to enhance the basic design with ancillary fire effects, and hopefully tour Fenrir to other venues such as Art Outside in Austin, Priceless, and Coachella, so that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to experience the piece.
Thank you for checking out our project! We hope that you will help us bring Fenrir to life!
