False Vengeance is a modern day spy thriller, laced with lust, action, and intrigue…but its not a film, it’s a book, more specifically, an eBook, with film seamlessly integrated into the story. This is the future, the birth of a new genre, where the written word collides with the digital medium.
Imagine reading one of Robert Ludlum’s Bourne novels, turning the page and watching Bourne kick someone’s ass. Now imagine the same thing with a car chase…. That would be cool right—the best of both worlds, where the strengths of both the written word and film are combined on one canvas, that's False Vengeance.
Here's the video we were going to use as our Kickstarter video before we shot the Helicopter scene...but then decided to just go for it.
If you haven’t watched the above Kickstarter video, check it out, that’s a small taste of the footage from our chase scene. Check out our eBook trailer(below), which was also composed from the footage of our chase scene, its longer but it gives you an idea of what we're up to...and its pretty cool. It was the most ambitious and challenging scene we set out to film, and we decided that getting it done prior to this campaign was the best way to show, rather than tell, just how committed we are to the project(what are credit cards for....right?). The results of which we're pretty psyched about to say the least....Which brings us to the HUGE debt of gratitude we owe to a good friend, who set off a chain reaction of events that made it all possible. All of which started with him providing us with his helicopter(among other things), for free. He then hooked us up with our rock star pilot Evan Van Gilson(skyriverhelicopters.com He's an instructor, and can basically do anything in a helicopter!). From there, Evan hooked us up with our helicopter sniper(He's the real deal!) And as if that wasn't enough, Sky Manor Airport (skymanorairport.com), where Evan works out of, gave us the green light to shoot there...We didn't even have the chance to ask! Sky Manor...You Rock! We could go on(yes, there's actually more) but suffice it to say things really fell our way.
With just over 110,000 words written and edited (that’s roughly 450 pages), False Vengeance is on its way to becoming the first(as far as we know) adult fiction eBook to incorporate audio and video. Our story is going to show readers what the digital medium has been begging authors to do, utilize it.
Utilize it as the original canvas, and in doing so, opening the door to creative options only offered in this format. For us, that means integrating film clips, not a lot, and not just for the sake of it, but where its inclusion clearly enhances the story in some way(at least in our opinion). As we mentioned above, in our story, there’s a helicopter chase scene, it’s a scene that you want to see, not just read. It’s an action scene that the written word struggles to fully capture, especially in terms of pace, and this is where film steps in and naturally excels.
Imagine simply turning the page on your iPad, iPad mini, iPhone, iPod Touch, Kindle Fire, or Android device and watching what comes next... cool, right. Call it mixed media, call it enhanced story telling, call it what you want, it's the new genre on the block and we’re going to give you a large taste of it now.
What's this eThriller about... An explosion rips through a residential building in Peshawar, Pakistan and the members of an elite US anti-terror team are all killed, but in the last moment before their deaths they’re able to alert the government of an impending terrorist attack on American soil: the assassination of nanotech scientist Jack Scott. Assigned to protect him and his groundbreaking research are two FBI agents: Sara Flynn, an unproven rookie who is old friends with the reclusive scientist, and Nick Price, an agent whose unorthodox methods include the use of two highly trained German Shepherds with fearsome and extremely unusual abilities. Under the guidance of NSA department head Alan Cashman and the eccentric tech analyst Irving Whitely, Sara and Nick race to intercept the assassins and the shadowy mastermind who always seems to be one step ahead of them. As this original, gripping narrative unfolds, the reader is transported into a steamy triangle of passionate sex, high-speed car-and-helicopter chases, and unforeseen corruption.
What its not: Its not interactive, why do we feel its so important to emphasize this, because when we talk about fiction, one of the key attributes of the reading experience is that it’s a passive activity. As a reader, you want to grab your book, get comfortable, and drift off into the story, and we’re not looking to rock that boat.
PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS:
Simon Scott - Member of TLB Media Productions LLC and the motivating force behind getting False Vengeance off the ground, has over two years of time invested in the project.
Last summer, TLB Media Productions went on the hunt for Directing talent. Simon contacted Claude Kervan, the Chair of the film making department of New York Film Academy (www.NYFA.edu ), explaining his intention to film a helicopter chase scene and did he think any of his students would be interested in working on the project. Claude kindly passed the word on to recent grads, which led to a marathon couple of days lodged in the corner of an Upper Eastside Starbucks speaking to interested candidates. Prior to meeting, all of the candidates were briefed with the Helicopter scene in mind, and were asked how they 'saw it' and what they thought it would take to pull it off… with no budget. Not everyone understood, that no budget, was not the same as unlimited budget (perhaps that was our fault). Mike Harden was the first candidate to walk in the door, and we could have saved a lot of time had we just wrapped things up right then. He seemed to understand exactly what it was that we were trying to accomplish, he was motivated, and at the end of our meeting, he said, “I don’t care if we have to shoot this Gorilla style, I want to be part of it.” And he is.
Mike Harden is our Director & Editor (MikeHardenFilms.com )
It was an easy choice. Funny thing is, when you pick the right people good things happen, False Vengeance needed more than just a Director, to bring the scene to life, we also needed a film crew, without missing a beat, Mike got down to business, calling on his friends from NYFA, all of whom shared his passion for film and all of whom readily volunteered to join the team and make it happen.
Mike’s Friends and now members of the False Vengeance film team:
Chris Eng - Director of Photography
Catalina Vela – Assistant Director
Nick Landa – Camera operator
Jon Eng – actor/sound recording & mix
Jesus Sanchez - actor
Use of Funds: Up until this point editing costs have been our greatest expense, however, now that we have an edited manuscript in our hands, that's all about to change. We need your help, to tackle our greatest upfront cost, the software platform that will allow us to merge the scenes we’ve filmed with the text of our story, and turn False Vengeance into an App. We’ve already identified the software provider and had discussions with them, they're just waiting for us now. This cost alone will consume 80% of our Kickstarter goal, the rest of the funds will be used to pay down the debt incurred from our helicopter scene and additional editing work. Are there other expenses or things we’d like to do… of course, but if we can raise the $17,600 that we’ve set out to raise, it will guarantee our project comes to life. So, if you like reading great stories and want a glimpse into the future, help us bring False Vengeance to life by making a pledge to our campaign and reserving yourself a copy of this thriller.
How Kickstarter works: For those of you who are not familiar with how Kickstarter works, it goes like this: If, at the end of our funding campaign, we reach our goal of raising $17,600 as a result of your generous pledges, our project will be funded and we’ll be off to the races. If, however, we don’t reach our funding goal… we get noth’in… no matter how close we get...nothing, which of course would be a bummer… and will put the brakes on things for a while. On the flip side, if we raise more than our goal, False Vengeance benefits and gets an extra kick in the pants(a problem we look forward to facing...remember those other expenses or things we'd like to do...)
So what can you do to help us reach our goal.
Have a look at the rewards we’re offering and see if there’s one (or more) that tickles your fancy, select it, and the Kickstarter website will guide you thru the instructions (it’s a breeze) and remember, if for instance, you choose our 1st Reward, which is for $11, and you really wanted to pledge...say $14,000.00...I mean...$14.00, then just pop that amount in, very cool and thanks. Afterwards, the next time you’re on Facebook, tweeting, or texting your 100 closest friends, give us a shout out, and spread the good word.
Feel free to contact us either thru Kickstarter or at FalseVengeance@gmail.com
And check out our website: FalseVengeance.com We've got some great behind the scene photos of our helicopter shoot.
Risks and challenges
Without a doubt, the catch all phrase that keeps us awake at night is… production delays, some of which have already been experienced in one form or another, but we believe we’ve gotten better and better at anticipating them and therefore mitigating them, and while we can’t rule them out, at worst, it will only be a delay. With your help, we're going to bring False Vengeance to life, and then to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
