About this project
As seen in:
We cut and craft quality denim meant to take you wherever you go. We believe in quality. We believe in simple living, and we believe in paying attention to the world around us. Backcountry Denim is an extension of these beliefs.
- Using Dyneema® technology, the strongest fiber on the planet. Period.

- Engineered mobility crotch gusset for maximum movement while reinforcing in the exact area that jeans typically fail first.

- Using a 12 ounce weight denim. Not too heavy and not too light.
- Lifetime manufacturers guarantee on all seams and hardware, including buttons, zippers and rivets.
That's how the outdoor industry got started back in the 70's and that's what happened here. When we looked for denim that could take us from the outdoors to the city, we couldn't find anything. There were options, overbuilt and unattractive, not really ready to jump from the mountain to a meeting.
How your jeans make you feel makes all the difference. That's why we made a jean that fits the part, no matter the setting.
Our go to is the Classic Straight Leg -- it's that goldilocks of denim fits, not too skinny, not too relaxed, but just right. It's that perfect modern fit where the leg can fit over your Vasque® boots while still looking great with tennies, dress shoes or sandals. When it comes to jeans, fit is something we can all agree on as a top priority.
With a mid-rise waistline, you get enough coverage to bend over your townie bike or crouching down to stoke the campfire. This is definitely not your dad's jean.
Our gusset panel is engineered to give you the mobility you need without stealing the show. We specifically designed this feature to stay hidden, keeping your jeans fitting perfect from every angle.
Our Slim-cut is the same great straight leg as our Classic, but with a just about an inch taken out of the seat and thigh. This is for a more snug fit on those of us with a smaller butt and thighs.
Our jeans are like your favorite boot, they take a few wears, but that's what makes them perfect. Wear them everyday, do whatever your life does -- hike, dinner with friends, Monday meetings -- we promise they just get better over time.
Eventually, you'll get a beautiful fade and bend in the knee just where your body wants it. You can be proud of how they look and the feel they have. After all, you put the miles in it took to get there.
BEFORE AND AFTER 382 DAYS:
We wore these jeans every single day for 382 days. They went on the trail, scaled rock walls, got down in the garden, attended many meetings, cut wood, built shelves, and got varnish on them while finishing our retail displays. We think they look all the better for it and we know they have a whole lot of life left in them.
It's truly the best denim out there, made with premium aesthetic and unmatched performance.
CONE WHITE OAK MILLS™
Cone Mills has produced USA denim since 1905. They were the first, and now the longest, standing mill in the US and that CONE™ label means you're getting the best, most iconic denim in the world.
ENGINEERED DENIM - WITH DYNEEMA®
THE STRONGEST FIBER ON THE PLANET
DYNEEMA® is the strongest fiber known to man. 15 times stronger than steel cable, we weave our denim with just enough Dyneema to give you maximum durability while still maintaining the look, feel and shape of premium denim.
MADE IN THE USA
All of our jeans are made here in the USA. And we don't just stitch them here, we source all of our fabrics and hardware domestically. Sourcing local lessens our footprint, supports local economy and gives us the hands on accessibility we need as craftsmen.
We keep our designs simple and functional, crafting each item with purpose.
There aren't a lot of bells and whistles on our jeans -- unlike a lot of outdoor denim on the market -- but every single feature we include is important. They might be subtle, but they make all the difference. For us, we decided to take a more utilitarian approach, incorporating the extras we felt made sense.
These jeans will outlast anything in your closet. They are built for the rugged adventures in life, and also have the detailed aesthetic and perfect fit for you to look great when out in the city or in your office meetings.
The BDCo badge is a hand-branded guarantee. We promise to fix anything that fails as a result of our manufacturing --- this includes hardware, zippers, seams, rivets and buttons. We'll either repair or replace your gear at absolutely no cost to you.
Yes, that is our branding iron and yes, we make all of our leather patches by hand.
That's a real, honest-to-goodness, fire-heated brand. We heat it up over campfires at our home in Mt. Tamalpais (Mt. Tam for you locals) and we hand stamp every one of our leather patches. We've touched every piece of leather, right here between the mountains and the sea, overlooking redwoods and salty shores. Mt. Tam used to be home to bootleggers, ranchers and pioneers, BDCo is making sure it still is.
Everywhere we go -- from showcases to epic expeditions -- we always stop off to check in on that area's public lands. We PLANT native species where they need them most; we REMOVE invasive species, garbage and waste responsibly; and we IMPROVE existing trails, forging new access where needed.
MAINTAINING PUBLIC LAND IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE, IF NOT US, THEN WHO?
THESE ROLLING HILLS, THESE WIDE PRAIRIES, THESE DEEP AND WILD CANYONS, THEY'RE OURS.
EDUCATION IS KEY. ACCESS IS ESSENTIAL. ACTION IS EVERYTHING.
To bring back deforested areas, we plant native species. We remove invasive species, trash and waste. We improve our trail systems through maintenance and creating opportunities of access.
Every item you purchase from Backcountry Denim Co. is a symbol of your dedication to these efforts.
-- WE'LL COME TO YOU
Our bus, RATTLE AND HUM, has a lot of hyphens to its name:
MOBILE SHOWROOM - CABIN - HOME - WORKSHOP
Which is great because it's outfitted with all the tools of our trade, making it possible to stay on the road forever, making our mark wherever we go. Instead of holding regular sales meetings, we give retailers directions to our nearest trail, hand them some pick axes, shovels and canvas bags so they can help work on the public land we're all out there enjoying.
For us, we made it a requirement to put in some real hours on the trail before you can ever carry our brand.
We've spent years behind the scenes at the top denim companies in the world. We've gotten down and dirty working on the tech and spec within the most iconic outdoor companies and we got schooled on the trail by those problem-solving founders of yesterday. Basically, we've paid our dues and we've earned our seat at the table.
We've spent 3 years building Backcountry Denim as the only outdoor company out there making real denim for life on and off the trail.
Risks and challenges
We are confident that after working on our product and development for 3 years, we have every possible kink worked out. We completed the product over a year ago and have been testing the product ever since. This product will be exactly what we have described and we took this time to ensure we only introduce it to you with this full confidence.
In manufacturing the risk hardest to manage is delays. We are confident in our capabilities, experience, partnerships and timelines, (we have all done this before within many companies and many more factories) however...with all of our experience, we also know that sometimes things happen and you just have to fly hold pattern in those instances. We do not own the factories we partner with, and thus we cannot fully control them. If for some reason there is a delay in receiving raw materials due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, for instance, you can't just simply make up that time by adding fuel to the jet. If we are delayed for any reason, we will stay in contact with you and ensure you are informed.
We have watched and paid attention to countless Kickstarter campaigns. We will be the best in communicating and keeping you with us along the entire process. You will never have to wait longer than 48 hours for a response. This is not just a one shot product, after this campaign delivers, we will be rolling out the rest of the brand offering. You are the first to stand by us and you will be the first that we go to for all the information we need about what we should be doing next. You are our partners and we will give you the respect and attention you deserve.
The worst of the worst possible delays would only last weeks, not months. That we can promise. No matter what, we will get it done and to you, and more than likely, without any delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
