About this project
I'm a creative writing major whose work has stagnated since graduating from college in 2008.
I have a story to write. It is my own story, although names, dates, places, etc will be changed to preserve the confidentiality of those featured, much of the novel will be based on truth. But since I don't want to end up like certain other memoir writers who have been criticized for less than truthful anecdotes, I'd prefer to write my story as fiction, giving me the chance to freely alter whatever needs altering in order to make the story coherent, and to allow me to approach it with a somewhat dark sense of humor rather than the total seriousness I would feel necessary for a work of strict non-fiction.
If you are interested in genetic illness, or the stories of people who must live with them, consider contributing. I feel my story will raise awareness, aside from just being interesting.
If you have any connection (and chances are growing every day that you do) with drug addiction, and the horror through which it can put individuals and families and communities, then consider a contribution. My story, if it were simplified, could easily be read as a cautionary tale to my generation about the need to be informed.
If you care about our country's failing health care system which lets thousands of people fall through the cracks every day, consider contributing. My book will take a hard look at what is going on in our doctors offices and hospitals that is making it so difficult for the lower and middle classes to access the healthcare we need.
I am a writer. I have spent years writing. But now I have a story, I have time, and I am healthy enough to finally get it all down on paper. Better than that, I have a purpose - my book may be classified as fiction, but as any avid reader knows, any story can fundamentally change the way we think. And I believe that my story is different enough to help people come to terms with some of the difficulties that we face in our world today.
Risks and challenges
Risks? Challenges? The biggest risk I'm taking here is that somehow after all my work I won't be able to find a publisher for my book. However, with enough money from this project, I could potentially self-publish.
The other biggest risk is that I might not finish the book on time.
But I have already started, and I have plenty of time to see this through.
At 26, I've already tried to write several novels, and I was unable to finish them, due to illness, general business, or lack of commitment.
In this case, however, I have just recovered from a major health set-back, and will have at least a few months, and most likely longer, before I could potentially end up too ill to write. Also, most of the time, when I am ill, I can still write.
I am also firmly committed to finishing this book regardless of the funding I get here.
The funding would just be helpful to get things off the ground, hire an editor, find a publisher, or in lieu of a formal press, the funding would go toward self-publishing, in print and as an e-book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
