About this project
As transgender women, my sisters and I experience a variety of attitudes as we try and go about our daily lives. There is a general perception that transgender individuals are somehow flawed, not “normal,” or in some other way do not make a positive contribution to the social construct. This work hopes to portray our community in its most human terms. We have careers and families, dreams and hopes like anyone, yet we do this in the face of extraordinary amounts of misinformation, blind hate and ignorance. The hope is that this work will shed light on just how few differences there are between individuals who are transgender and those who are not.
Interviews will be held with 10 transgender figures who exemplify what is good about our community, people who work and give back, who dream their own dreams and make dreams happen for others. People, who by the very way they go about living their lives, represent what is good about them. Over a two- to three-day period, the author will observe and interview each subject as well as their families, friends, and co-workers, examining how they serve their communities at large and the transgender community in particular.
This work will make a “Profiles In Courage” style examination of each individual which highlights their work and their character. Each chapter will be devoted to a separate individual, with their story told in words and photos.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge facing the author is travel related. Interviews will be conducted in the following locations:
New York, NY
Rocky Mount, NC
Kansas City, MO
Los Angeles, CA
