I have loved working with wood since I was young. My grandfather had a shop I loved going over and building projects. I always cherished the finished product. Even more than the project, I cherished the time with my grandfather.
I am now at a place in my life where I can have a shop of my own. I love working on the lathe. Turning pens is a great way to use small pieces of exotic wood to make a beautiful finished product.
I also make my own French Polish and wax blends. I finish each pen with my artisan French Polish and a blend of beeswax and carnauba wax. This method brings out the unique natural beauty in each piece of wood. It keeps the natural color and highlights the grain in each piece.
I am doing this project to build my shop and experience as a craftsman. This will enable me to do more and bigger projects in the future. I would like to be able to offer hand turned pens, bowls, baseball bats and other projects made from beautiful exotic and domestic wood.
Risks and challenges
It is always a challenge when working with wood. There are times when a piece is almost done and it comes apart. Working on a lathe takes skill and practice. Some of the chisels and gouges take many hours of practice to master them. If they are not used with proper technique a project can be ruined. I have an expert wood turner I work with who helps me with technique. I can go to him for advise when struggling with a piece.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
