Welcome!

My name is Jørgen Brunborg-Næss, I live in Norway, and I have designed the Green Box of Games.

The basic idea behind the Green Box of Games is to create a boxed set of components that are (at least) as versatile and flexible as a standard deck of cards, while offering the opportunity for quality tabletop gaming experiences for both families and dedicated gamers. To make it accessible and available for a wide range of gamers and gaming situations, I strive to keep it as compact and as cheap as possible. I also hope that it will spark an interest in game design, and fuel the creativity of gamers of all ages by allowing anyone to create their own games, or change the games of others.

The "Very First Edition" of the Green Box of Games was produced in only 100 copies in the fall of 2016. Although fully complete and playable, it featured no game rules, and might be considered an extended prototype. That is why the next version of the Box, which will be produced with your help through this campaign, is called the "Second to None Edition".

For comprehensive information on the system and the games you can play, please visit the website:

www.GreenBoxOfGames.com

*) Artwork updated, almost final

**) Also note that Spiderman, Hilda and the other figures appearing in the animation video are not included.

What can you do with it?

  • Play games (obviously…), including traditional games, adapted versions of modern classics, and original games developed for the system. On www.greenboxofgames.com there are currently 40 games published, and on the Green Box's forums on BoardGameGeek new ideas are being posted and discussed.
  • Create your own games! Tweak an existing game, adapt one of your favourite games, or come up with something of your own. Share your ideas on the BGG forums to get feedback from other creators and players.

Why would you want it?

  • Because having many different games in one small box is great for fitting into a small suitcase/backpack/handbag/cabin/boat/etc.
  • Because it’s fun to create and not just play!

*) A note on artwork and changes from the “Very First Edition”

The “Very First Edition” of the Green Box was printed in just 100 copies last year. All the pictures you have seen of the Green Box are of this edition, including all pictures on this campaign page, the video animation, and everything on the website. We are working to complete updated artwork for the "Second to None Edition", and this will be posted as updates during the campaign.

The changes between the two editions are mostly cosmetic, and does not influence the gameplay mechanics of any games created. Mostly, everything gets bigger, so lets summarise:

  • Tile size is increased to 50x50mm (previous 32x32mm)
  • The card size is increased to 68x44 mm (previous 44x32mm)
  • The cube size is increased to 10mm (previous 8mm)
  • The design of the cards is updated to include *both* number and symbol in all corners
  • The cards get a special corner design that follows the border colour, so they will be identifiable by the colour blind
  • Some symbols are altered to allow for other interpretations

The "Second to None Edition" of the Green Box of Games comes with rules for 16 different games you can play. Click on one of the games below to read the complete rules on www.greenboxofgames.com.

Family games

A family game is a game that can be played and enjoyed by a family with children, or any other group where players are of different ages and/or with different levels of gaming experience. To achieve this, the rules should not be too complex, so the game can start quickly, and there should be a certain amount of luck involved, so everyone has a chance of winning. Also, to qualify for a family game, the game should be “friendly”, meaning it has little direct conflict between players.

Gold Mine (2-8 players)

Gold Mine is a game of push-your-luck, where you have to decide how far you can go in search of valuable gold nuggets. It is perhaps the quickest game to set up in the entire Green Box repertoire, just shuffle the deck and you’re ready to go.

Jump Gate (2-4 players)

Move your spaceship around the galaxy to collect cargo. Roll dice to move, but play cards to manipulate the results. Both luck and skillfull planning is needed to win!

Tunnel Run (2-4 players)

Tunnel Run is a race where each player has multiple pieces to move to the finish. Reduce the number of pieces and cards with younger players, and add advanced rules with older.

Flower Garden (2-5 players)

In Flower Garden the cards in your hand can have two functions: Play them in the shop to buy new flowers, or play them in your garden to plant the flowers you have bought.

Fawlty Towers (2-6 players)

Strategy Games

The very generic label “strategy game” is used to express that these games have more complexity and/or more conflict than the family games. Luck will play a lesser role, and players will need concentration and competitive instincts to win.

Grenade Salad (2-4 players)

Grenade Salad is a "family war game". You start by throwing a bunch of cubes onto the table, which serves as an open battlefield. Then you play cards to outsmart and eliminate the opposition.

War 2.0 (2-4 players)

War 2.0 is a game of conflict and conquest. The game relies on psychology and bluffing to maintain the suspense necessary for an engaging game of combat.

The Gauntlet (2-4 players)

The Gauntlet is a race to the finish line, with a nasty twist. The cards you play can be used to advance through the track, to attack your opponents directly or to trigger traps that will damage them.

All Your Base (2-6 players)

Draft cards and pass them to the next player. Each card you play can perform one of three possible actions, acquire a base, build hardware or install software.

Son of Kark (2-4 players)

Modelled after the mother of all tile laying games, the Son of Kark challenges you to find the best placement and the most valuable action when placing a tile and a cube each turn.

Temple of Doom (1-6 players)

Help the team of archaeologists to escape the temple, and save all the artefacts along the way. Temple of Doom is a solitaire or co-op challenge where you use different parts of the deck to move, to find treasure and to manage the temple collapsing.

Traditional Games

These are classic games with a history of a century, or a millennium, that can be adapted and played with the Green Box.

Liar’s Cards (2-10 players)

Originally a dice game called “Liar’s dice”, this game requires clever bluffing and second-guessing if you want to avoid being called out as a liar.

Othellino (2 players)

The game of Othello takes “a minute to learn, a lifetime to master”. The Green Box doesn’t have enough pieces for a full game, but a compact version can be played on a 6×6 grid.

Backgammon (2 players)

One of the truly great ancient games still widely played today. The game perfectly balances luck and skill, making it accessible and enjoyable to perhaps an even greater audience than chess.

Halma (2-4 players)

Perhaps most known in the form of “Chinese Checkers”, this intriguing game has no luck, but plenty of unpredictability when all players try to optimise their route towards their target.

Speed (2 players)

Perhaps stretching the “traditional” category a bit, but this fast-paced card game can be played with a standard deck of cards and several custom ones.

Designers Deal (inc Mechanicards)

The "Designers Deal" pledge level has a few special features that need attention.

First, the deal includes one deck of "Mechanicards". The Mechanicards is a game design tool developed by Aurélien Lefrançois at Prismatik. Aurélien and his team have used the cards in their game design workshops in France and on tour across Europe with great success. It is a small deck of cards where each card represents one aspect of a game, for instance one piece of material or components, one player skill or one game mechanic. They can be used to analyse an existing game, describing it through the different cards, or as a starting point for creating new games. Combined with the Green Box, you get a complete game design workshop in-a-box: The Mechanicards provide the basis for the rules, and the Green Box gives you the components you need to make a game. The Mechanicards are available in French, German, English and Dutch.

Second, the Designers Deal pledge will grant you one extra free Green Box of Games if you submit a game during the campaign, or at the latest before August 31. You can post your game idea in the comments on the campaign or on the BGG forums, or you can send by email to contact@greenboxofgames.com. I will publish all ideas on the BGG forums (unless you already did that yourself), and if you take the time to write up a complete set of rules I will publish it on www.greenboxofgames.com. Fully credited to you, of course. I will add one Box to your pledge when they are ready to ship.

The "I Can't Wait" Add-on (Limit: 30)

When I printed 100 copies of the Green Box last fall, I also printed 100 extra sets of components without the actual box. While the Box more or less sold out (I have three left) I have a few left of the printed components in plastic bags.

The "I Can't Wait" Addon means that I will send one of these sets to you (anywhere in the world) as soon as the campaign ends. Shipping is included in the 95 NOK price.

To include this addon in your pledge, you need to change your pledge and increase it by 95 NOK. That's all! This add-on is limited to 30 backers. Currently there are 25 still available.

Stretch goals

No. That's right, no stretch goals.

There is no limit to the kind of extra material that could be included in the Green Box, but the whole idea of a game system is to allow for creativity within given boundaries. While I am not ruling out the possibility of future expansions, the system as it is now is complete, consistent and powerful.

The other standard option for stretch goals is upgraded components. The price point on the Green Box has been pushed as low as it goes, and I'm also subsidising shipping, so unless the campaign really takes off to the upper stratosphere there is no room for a more expensive production. If it *does* reach the upper stratosphere, I'll add a stretch goal later. Promise!

Shipping -  anywhere for 60 NOK (€6, $7)

The Green Box of Games "Second to None Edition" will be produced in the Netherlands. The current plan is to ship all games through Amazon.de (in Germany), but we are also investigating other potential fulfilment partners.

We will likely not be able to provide localised fulfilment in other parts of the world, so please be aware of any taxes and import handling fees applicable in your country. One option is to corroborate with other backers in your country and go for the 12-pack.

We charge one flat-fee global shipping cost of 60 NOK that applies to all pledge levels and all countries.

The exceptions are:

- Essen Pick-up = free shipping! - The game will, if all goes well, be ready in time for Essen. If you want to pick up your pledge on this fair, please select “Christmas Island” as your country. (Any actual residents of Christmas Island will also get free shipping as a thanks for letting me borrow their country :-))

- Norway = Free shipping or “Vipps” later! - I live in Norway, so for backers in my country we will work something out. In the Oslo/Østfold region we can arrange personal pick-up or delivery, and I plan to visit as many gaming conventions and gatherings as I can, including Spill-o-Rama in Stavanger. If mail-free delivery can not be arranged I will send your pledge to you and you can pay me with Vipps.

Inspired by other games

While most of the non-traditional games included in this edition are my original creations, a few are heavily inspired by other great games created by respected game designers. I make no secret of this, and in fact a key strength of the Green Box of Games is that you can use it to adapt your favourite games. However, I avoid making direct references to the original games in the promotion of the game or in the printed material, in order not to incur any trademark infringements. The original designers of those games do definitely deserve credit, so here they are:

  • "Gold Mine" is heavily inspired by "Diamant"/"Inca Gold", by Bruno Faidutti and Alan R. Moon
  • "Tunnel Run" is heavily inspired by "Cartagena", by Leo Colovini
  • "Son of Kark" is heavily inspired by Carcassonne, by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede

If you have questions regarding this, please contact me on contact@greenboxofgames.com.

Risks and challenges

I'll be honest; This is my first time publishing a board game, and my first time running a Kickstarter campaign. Although I have done a ton of research, I am still not sure I know what I am getting myself into, but I am dedicated to make this campaign a success and a pleasant experience for you, the backers.

What I lack in experience I plan to make up for in outstanding customer service. Package gets lost in the mail? I'll ship you a new one for free. Damaged components or production errors? I'll ship you new ones for free. Product doesn't meet your expectations? I'll refund your pledge.

In summary: The risks are on me, not on you!

With that said, I feel the risks are fairly limited. The agreement with the manufacturers and the timeline for production is set. I have the money to finance the production even without the Kickstarter, so there will be no delays stemming from financial issues. There are no advanced components in the Box, so there should not be any unforeseen circumstances causing delays in production.
