About

What in the World is Quinoa?  Why is Everybody Talking about It?  And Why is it so Good for Me?

Quinoa is an ancient grain which has been eaten by South American cultures for thousands of years.  The Incas called it the grain of the gods.  Quinoa is a super-food.  It is twice as high in protein as most cereals and grains, it has all the necessary fatty and amino acids, it is gluten free, high in anti-oxidants, it tastes great, and can be prepared in 15 to 17 minutes.

 Our Unique Position

Our position is unique.  Most businesses have a product and are seeking help with distribution and finding a market.  Eagle Cap Quinoa has the opposite challenge.  Everyone wants our quinoa!

Experts and major distributors have praised our quality (see "our quality" below) and the demand for organic, Oregon grown quinoa is extraordinary.  A desire for our product has been expressed by high-end Portland restaurants, local stores, markets, value added products both local and regional, as well as from distributors both regional and national.

We simply need help in creating the infrastructure to produce the product.

What the Money is for

We want to get our quinoa to you and to the marketplace.

To do this we must expand, and to expand we need your help.  We need help with the costs of labor, equipment, land leases, fertilizer, organic pest controls, transportation, processing, packaging, and as important as anything, research and development (see below).

Right now we are planting and harvesting 4 to 5 acres by hand (we feed the cut quinoa into a combine which we must rent).  With a hoped for yield of 1 to 2 thousand lbs/acre, this year we are able to fulfill only our initial contracts with a host of Portland restaurants.

With the Kickstarter funds we will be able to harvest, process and deliver our quinoa to our Portland market.

These funds will also enable us to have everything in place for next year and will put us in a position to expand up to ten acres.  Consequently, we will be able to supply local markets and stores, and regionally distributed health food bars as well as the Portland restaurants.

The following year (two years from now) we implement our 2nd phase of expansion incrementally up to 50 then 100 then 1,500 acres.  We have local farmers interested in offering their land and working with us.  Funding for this phase will come from government and municipal grants (we are well positioned for several business and agricultural grants), investors, community public offerings or possibly a second wave Kickstarter.

Any money raised above our goal will go towards this continuing expansion.

Why Grow Quinoa?

World demand for quinoa has exploded over the last decade.

Until recently virtually all the quinoa we consume comes from South America.  South American farmers cannot keep up with the demand, and there is a need for North American production.

Our Quality

North American production has begun, and for the most part it is a mass production of a lower quality non organic quinoa.  Eagle Cap Quinoa is on a mission to produce the very best, high quality, organic quinoa just as the Bolivians have for thousands of years.  Below is an analysis of Eagle Cap Quinoa by Andean Naturals placing our quality much closer to the Bolivian supreme than to other North American producers.  (Eagle Cap Quinoa is the USA in the photo)

Why Grow Quinoa in the USA?

Nearly everyday we hear from food critics, bloggers, chefs, and health food store owners, "When are we going to get a local organic quinoa?"

Why Grow Quinoa here in Wallowa County on Prairie Creek Farm?

Though quinoa will grow almost anywhere it will only produce a healthy yield under the right conditions.  Wallowa County has some of the most optimum conditions in North America.  Prairie Creek Farm is famous for the flavor of its produce, and Wallowa County needs a new cash crop to strengthen the agricultural base of this farming community.

We are benefiting the soil, the community, the consumer and the food industry.

Research and Development or Why the Bolivians Should Come to Town

We lean heavily on Washington State University for information.  With over a hundred years of study on most crops this is only the fourth or fifth year of quinoa research.

Quinoa in a new land faces many new stresses from weeds, bugs, and climate all of which we know little.  A Bolivian farmer typically works with dozens of varieties of quinoa on his farm and has a subtle knowledge passed down through generations.

In conjunction with Andean Naturals we are working on a plan to bring some Bolivian farmers to Wallowa County to teach us.  In exchange we will offer equipment, technology, royalties, or whatever is deemed fair.

 The Book.

"Of Gods and Grains: A brief history of quinoa and its modern adventure"

This book, written by Eagle Cap Quinoa founder Ted Golder and illustrated by renowned photographer Ellen Bishop, tells an epic tale and is visually stunning.

To tell the story of quinoa is to tell the story of human civilization.

This book explores the birth of agriculture, the great Tiwanaku civilization, the Incas, the Spanish conquest, and four brave men from Colorado who initiated the modern quinoa revival.

Fascinating are the firsthand accounts of this start up quinoa company in the wild west of agriculture.  Learn how a laundromat saved an entire crop.  From divine status to obscurity to something the entire world wants, this is the story of quinoa.

What People are Saying about Us

 In Capital Press:

Risks and challenges

Any farming operation has obvious and inherent risks. We are dependent on the weather. Being such a new crop in North America, there is no crop insurance for quinoa. We can with great effort control the weeds and insects to a certain extent, but as with all farmers the weather is out of our control.
To lessen the threat of being undermined by weather damage we are lining up contracts with value added product providers (like b.good health bars). This increases the value of the crop and does not demand a large volume, so if there is a bad year this will mitigate any financial setback. Also, we are working closely with Washington State University, one of the worlds leading researchers in quinoa, to get varieties that will better handle climate stresses as they become available.
