About

THE BOOK

All Fall Down gets its title from the nursery rhyme Ring Around the Rosie, which was written about the Great Plague that decimated a third of the population of Europe in the 17th Century. The disease is not a page note in the history books. It exists today. It is caused by a bacteria that is transmitted by fleas that typically infect rats and occasionally humans. If a patients survives long enough, the bacteria infect the lungs, enabling the plague to spread like the common cold.

In the novel, the plague strikes a college town in Texas days before a presidential visit. When the first victim dies and the cause is identified, university immunologist and plague specialist Dana Sparks leaps in to help. But the disease spreads quickly and there is soon evidence the bacteria are unusually resistant to antibiotics that would otherwise kill them. Domestic terrorism is suspected, CDC experts are called in, and Dana is soon the number one suspect. In a race against time, and in effort to clear her name, she must locate the source of the disease and find an antidote against the bacteria before Black Death consumes the town.

Here is a page of sample text

The hospital was on lock-down. Given the seriousness of the situation, Dana expected pandemonium. Instead, the hospital was eerily empty and quiet. ICU appeared to be closed. There were no medical personnel or auxiliary staff in the corridors. No candy stripers and cleaners, no smell of breakfast cooking, no flower delivery people. “What’s going on?” she asked.

“It’s a nightmare,” Sam said. “We're closed. Locked tight.” He fixed his gaze on her. “How did you get in? What are you going here?”

“I came to see Jack Dowel. How many people are sick?”

“We’ve got six new cases and St. Joseph’s has four. The hospital  turned ICU into a quarantine room for people with pneumonic plague. They’ve cleared out half the patients and sent the non-critical patients home. We’ve called in all our medical staff. I was due for a four-day break and now I have to work straight through. We’re on day and night.” Sam lowered his voice and looked around the deserted hallway. “This is a bad strain.” He added in a whisper. “It might be deliberate.”

 BACKGROUND

I am a member of the Mystery Writers of America, and 'All Fall Down' was my first book. I have since written 'Gold Street' (about the economic meltdown) and 'Harm' (about health care for profit). I have a PhD in Toxicology and did post-doctoral work in Infectious Immunology. I have worked as a science editor and writer, and lived in Africa for over a decade (1991-2012).

The idea for "All Fall Down" came from two simultaneous events in 1998. The first was the Embassy Bombing in Nairobi, Kenya; the second an outbreak of bubonic plague in India. One friend was killed in the embassy. Another friend flew to India, one of two passengers onboard a 747 that was fully booked on the return flight. People were leaving India in droves. He said the streets were empty, except for the rats, and they were everywhere. The events made me wonder: what would happen if a bioterrorist engineered a plague bacteria that was resistant to antibiotics?

The book was published in 2003. As a consequence of 9/11 and the ensuing Anthrax scare, it came out a year later than scheduled. The publisher didn’t think the public was ready for the book. At least that’s what he said, though I suspect he ran out of money. He had planned and promised a huge publicity campaign, books in every book store, and ended up doing nothing. After nine years, I finally got the rights back for the book. That meant that I am now free to republish.

The book is written. I am looking for supporters to help me bring the book back to life. To achieve this end, I need to format the text. This involves hiring a page designer who will properly deal with the paragraphing and widow and orphan issues. I need to hire a graphic artist to design the cover. This is picky work that is way beyond my capabilities. Then, I need to list the book with the printer. I use Lightning Source, which is the biggest printer and distributor in the U.S. Lightning Source holds my typeset files and cover file on their computers. When an order for the book is placed, Lightning Source will print a copy of the book and ship it out in a turn-around of about one to two days. I plan to sell an ebook for $8.00 and a soft cover copy for $15.00. Donations of either of these amounts will reward the supporter with a relevant copy of the book. In essence, I am looking for supporters to buy the book in advance.

Risks and challenges

This is a risk free venture if I am successful in raising the capital to fund the project. The book is written, I know the type-setter, and I have a cover designer. I have recently published a novel, "Gold Street" through Lightning Source which distributes books through Ingram and plan to publish "All Fall Down" using the same services. I have just finished a third book, "Harm" which is in the editing phase and should be available shortly. I am not new to this and just ecstatic to have the publishing rights back to my first book, which was a well-received page-turner.
