Great news: Stretch goals unlocked and in-development feature film 'Wolfwalkers' is added to the book. Every art book will also ship with a unique character sketch from Song of the Sea and 5 art cards!
Final sprint: Help us reach 300% and we'll donate a batch of books for a non-profit kids art charity.
We truly believe in the power of sharing the creative process.
So much inspiration, knowledge and material often gets left on a hard drive after a project finishes, when it could instead inspire the next beautiful indie projects.
This mindset has driven us to our newest concept: "How We Crafted", where creators share stories from their work.
This first issue of the high quality printed art book will (if funded) feature animation directors, producers, supervisors, illustrators and a graphic novel author giving insight into their their creative process. "But who?", we hear you ask...Not just anybody, but beautiful projects and experienced creators, all ready to break down a super-practical topic and inspire you with their artwork.
By backing this campaign you're also supporting the creators from the 12 featured projects.
50% of the profits goes back to the artists and studios, evenly distributed, to help them continue making their art and share more stories like this.
The final topics may change, but we'll promise to make it awesome no matter what :)
We are making this book with our users in mind. You are often creators yourself with professions and/or aspirations in animation, illustration, game development and similar visually oriented craftsmanships.
This will be mirrored in the book - you'll get applicable knowledge and in-depth, gritty details of the challenges behind the projects.
Two words kept creeping up on us, as we developed the idea: High-quality and applicable. We wanted to make something beautiful that feels great in your hands, but also light enough to easily carry around, so the great insights don't have to stay on the shelf.
Our solution is to merge the aesthetic and in-depth experience of our favourite art-of books with the lighter and more functionally flexible attributes of a high-end magazine.
With the "How we Crafted" art book, you'll get the sensation of aesthetically pleasing uncoated cover, thick high-quality paper and beautiful high-resolution images from the process behind the projects.
The goal is to feature insightful knowledge together with beautiful material, that inspires creators in a wide variety of fields like character development, background animation, stop-motion directing, doll manufacturing and other .
We've been working with these projects and their material for two years now, which gives us a great advantage in going from online to offline showcasing. With your magazine you get an online interactive part of the chapters, that will keep growing with new material added over time, essentially expanding on your art book for years to come.
The book will be around 176 pages and will consist of 12 chapters, one per project. The larger-than-a4 format gives the artwork and stories room to breathe and will look stunning on every workstation or coffee table. All artwork pieces are high resolution and printed on quality uncoated paper.
The beautiful artwork will be weaved in the inspirational stories from the creators, with highly applicable stories (a concept we're really excited about).
The hard case sleeve
Get a luxurious high quality hard card sleeve for your artbook/magazine to intrigue guests to your studio or home. The back continues an all white clean design and the spine features the text "How We Crafted Volume I".
12 in-depth stories will take some time to read through, so a bookmark comes in handy. Luckily, we got this unique quality bookmark ready to help you, featuring artwork from every project in the artbook.
The credit in the book
Every backer from a tier that include book credits will be featured with name, email and portfolio url (optional). You rock and we want to acknowledge it!
The 1 year web access
An annual plan to Craft is usually $95,88, but through this campaign you get a whopping discount, making the lower tier only $50 (including the book).
With the plan you get access to all existing material and all future content released online on itsoncraft.com the next year. That's tens of thousands of concept art pieces, animation tests, background designs and How We Crafted interviews overall and five major updates every week.
If you choose a tier that includes a question you get to influence the content of the artbook. You pick 1 project and ask anything related to the topic at hand. The question will be featured with your name, email address and portfolio link (optional). It's a way to not only get the book, but also ensure it touches the exact areas you're interested to know more about.
The "request a topic"
If you choose a tier that includes a topic request, you get to choose a brand new How We Crafted topic for one of the 12 creators. The How We Crafted will not go into the artbook but instead be released online in a rich digital experience with video, audio clips, background music, interview bits and of course a lot of artwork examples and insights. The topic is decided by you, so you can get insights specifically for a topic of your interest. How about "How We Crafted The Vikings" for The Secret of Kells or "How We Crafted The Miniature Models" for Machine? It's all up to you.
The 1 hour interview
If you choose a tier that includes a 1 hour interview, you get a dedicated 1on1 Skype interview with a creator of your choice and a topic of your choice. It's a unique opportunity to get their advice, do's and don'ts and improve your own craft with inspiration from their experiences. If you prefer, you can choose to spend the hour on having your portfolio reviewed, and get a head start for your career.

We've been thinking long and hard about the best possible solutions for both printing and shipping with many great options to choose from. In the end we chose local options here in Copenhagen for both.
Our printing solution is Kandrup, which is an old printing house dating back to 1920. Going with a local printing service ensures, that we can check the quality and quickly get in touch with them if problems arise.
Our shipping solution is Parcel Feeder, who have previously shipped for Pernille Ørum's wonderfully succesful "Coral"-campaign, which had more than 1.000 people backing. This experience in shipping for Kickstarter made us sure, that Parcel Feeder was the option for us.
That's us from start January (missing me, Emil; in the hectical period of setting up the campaign I couldn't find the self timer on the camera, so I'm the one taking the picture).
We've worked on creating Itsoncraft.com for almost two years now, working with indie creators on showcasing the creative process and material from their projects. Frederik is also the co-founder of animation studio Nørlum (Song of the Sea, Longway North), I'm a service designer myself, Niklas a former animation producer, Anders our content manager and Claudia handles festivals, community and funding. The team also holds animation veteran Jamie K. Bolio, producer Claus Toksvig Kjær and director Jericca Cleland.
We're based in Copenhagen but cater to creatives worldwide :)
Risks and challenges
The interviews won't be conducted before after reaching our goal, but we will soon begin releasing online versions of How We Crafted, so keep an eye out. As we are a small team, it takes time to make the content, and that is why we have the shipping date set for spring 2018.
As we've gone with a local option for both printing and shipping, we will be able to quickly handle any possible challenges. Both also have experience in providing for Kickstarter campaigns, so your rewards will be in good hands.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
