The feature documentary film Viking Crossing (working title) follows the preparation and mental development of the professional SUP athlete Casper Steinfath, in his attempt to be the first person in the world to paddle from Denmark to Norway. A journey that received Expedition of the year at the 2018 SUP awards in California, USA.

In the winter of 2017, Casper made his first attempt to cross Skagerrak - the ocean between the two countries. But after paddling for 16 hours with only 12km to shore, his legs collapsed from fatigue and an incoming storm in the dark winter night made his dream fall apart. A year later, Casper tried to cross Skagerrak once again. This time he succeeded. The frame of the film is the two attempts, opening with the drama of the failed first attempt, and finishing with the achievement of a successful crossing. The main part of the film is an up and close look into the mental development of Casper in the year between the two attempts portraying his learning curve, and showing what it takes to make a dream and project like the crossing come true.

Why this documentary matters

This documentary is not just a standard sports story about a hero that conquers all. It shows us what goes on beneath the surface of Caspers life as a professional sports athlete and portrays how he reflects on his choices and deals with the expectations from others as well as from himself. It aims to inspire people to follow their dreams despite obstacles and invites you to reflect on your own life and the choices you make.

What are the funds for?

We are now at the final stage in the making of Viking Crossing. We have all the raw material we need, but we still have a long way to go. We need to raise a minimum of 100.000 DKK (15,000 USD), but the more we raise the better the end result of the film will be. The funds are for the post-production of the film. This includes editing, grading, subtitling and translations, music and sound design as well as marketing and community outreach to help this film reach wider audiences. With your help, we can make it happen!

Timeline

With sufficient funding, we can finish the film by the end of 2018. From there, we’ll submit the film to film festivals around the world, and have it premiere in the spring of 2019. We will make sure to keep you posted on our progress throughout the campaign as well as keeping you informed on relevant matters afterwards.

Risks and challenges

When we first sat sails alongside Casper in 2017 on his first attempt to cross Skagerrak, we didn’t know how it would end. Nor did we know how it would turn out on his second try this year. That’s what we love about making documentaries - you never know where reality and the story will take you. At the same time it can definitely be challenging not knowing what will happen. In this case - following Casper on his journey, we quickly realized that no matter the outcome, we definitely would have a story to tell, as this movie is more about Caspers mental journey than it is about his success.

The risk we're facing now, is the possibility that we won't be able to raise sufficient funds to finish the film. However, the good thing about using Kickstarter is that it’s all or nothing. Your donation is guaranteed in that way that the money will only be withdrawn, if we reach our funding goal. And of course we expect that we will!
