What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

From a concept to a design, from a design to a simply beautiful product that is practical and easy to use. We now need your help to put it in to production.

We are a small team of designers and engineers with a passion for anything connected to bikes and cycling. We were given an opportunity to make our own product and of course it turned out to be a product for cyclists. The idea had been with us for a while but never developed into a concept.

There are a huge number of wall hangers and maintenance stands for bikes on the market today but none of them fit the bill for us. We wanted something different.

How we imagined it

We imagined a hanger that could offer an assisted lift function that allowed you to raise your bike up on a wall effortlessly using only one hand. We also wanted to incorporate a maintenance function that would allow you to stop the action at any point to enable you to perform maintenance at a convenient height. Things like; removing wheels, adjusting gears and brakes and giving the bike a simple wipe down. We also wanted to be able to lock the bike to the stand. We wanted something that would last for a long time and look great, but more importantly something that made the bike look great on the wall. It had to be practical and easy to use.

We wanted the product to be made in a responsible way using UK based manufacturers and use materials that were either reusable or recyclable.

In our minds we have realised all of these goals in our product: “TILLIT” and we hope that you will agree once you experience it.

Development started early 2017 and to date eight production prototypes have been produced, trailed and tested. We are very pleased with how they have turned out. The assembled product feels greater than the sum of it's parts and there lives a bit of unexplained magic in it. We are using these prototypes daily for promotional purposes and for our own personal use.

TILLIT

TILLIT is a Swedish word that means "to have trust".

TILLIT offers wall mounted storage, maintenance and display functionality for bikes in one irresistible, attractive package. As useful in your garage as it would be beautiful in your hallway or living room. TILLIT uses a gas spring to help you lift your bike to a fixed position on a wall for storage or display purposes. It can also be locked at any point of its travel to allow the user complete access to perform basic maintenance. There are plenty of existing wall hangers for bicycles on the market today but no one combines the, display, maintain, store and secure functionality in this elegant way.

TILLIT is made up by three separate assemblies; the wall mount, the arm and the bike rest. The wall mount is fixed to a load bearing wall, the arm provides the movement and the bike rest is what you hang your bike on. The bike is supported underneath the top tube of the frame and underneath the steering stem. This ensures that the front wheel does not fall to one side as the bike changes position. A gas spring stabilises and assists the movement of the arm. It compresses and stores energy when the lifting arm is brought downwards and expands, releasing its energy when the lifting arm is allowed to move upwards.

The movement is controlled by a hand lever that locks the arm in any desired position when released. This function makes TILLIT safe to operate as it stops moving when you let go. It is important to state that the product does not independently lift the bike, it allows for a one-handed lift by reducing weight at the same time as it guides the bike upwards into position.

Design and Construction

TILLIT is a wood and metall construction made to last, both mechanically and visually. High quality materials and engineering allows the product a long life, the visual appearance ensures it. Aspiring to transcend trends, time is a friend to this product, it looks better as it gets older. Like an old guitar or an old leather jacket its beauty and personality is enhanced by its life together with its owner.

Installation

Installation is straight forward and TILLIT will be delivered complete with comprehensive instructions. TILLIT must be installed on a load bearing wall using the supplied plugs and screws.

The basic procedure:

Simply measure a distance of 112cm from the floor.

Mark this height to give you the location of the lower set of holes on the wall mount.

Mark the 4 screw positions using the wall mount supplied, drill the appropriate 4 holes.

Attach the wall mount to the wall with supplied plugs and screws.

Attach the arm assembly to the wall mount with supplied screws.

Adjust the angle and tighten the bike rest to level your bike.

You are done.

What we need

We are looking for people to be part of our journey by supporting the next step in development. TILLIT is ready to face the world, you could be one of the first few to store, maintain and display your bike on the most exciting piece of kit around. During the last year we have identified suitable manufacturing processes and suppliers to take TILLIT into production, we now need your help to realise this dream.

 Thank You

Risks and challenges

Risks and challenges

Setting up a fully functioning production system is always a challenge no matter what the product might be. Suppliers, logistics, assembly, quality control and costs all must work in harmony. This can sometimes cause unexpected delays.

Our team has many years of experience in producing products and has faced all of these challenges before.

Our design process allows us to consider production limitations and possibilities from the very beginning. this ensures parts that are optimised for production in large numbers.

Working according to BS 8888 ensures we can communicate technical information to all of our manufacturing partners in a clear and traceable way.

We will keep all our backers up to date throughout this process.

Thank you for your support!
