1879 RPG, Miniatures and App (Canceled)
Help us launch FASA's new 1879 game line with an RPG, iPad app, 15mm miniatures game, and miniatures.
1879: The Game is Afoot!
1879 is a steampunk miniature war game and roleplaying game based on an alternate history of Victorian-era Britain. At the Great Silver Exhibition of 1876, a scientist of dubious repute attempts to show off his latest invention. An explosion causes him and all his equipment to disappear, leaving only a glowing, disc-like display. This turns out to be a portal to another world. By 1879, the forces of the British Empire have established a beachhead on this world and have just encountered the first sentient life. Calling themselves the Samsut, they have a thing or two to say about British plans for their world. 1879 explores the politics and intrigue on Earth of the discovery of this unprecedented portal and the military, scientific, and technological campaign to subdue a new world through the front door outside London.
The 1879 game line will include our core rule books, both miniature and RPG, supplements in the form of force books listing units and history, campaign books providing history and battle information, RPG adventures, novels, great miniatures to use for tabletop gaming, and our iPad app, which will let you play 1879 miniatures battles with gamers around the world.
“Spare us a shilling, Guv?” Our funding goal is $325,000. That sounds like a lot (it is), but this isn’t your normal project. It encompasses miniatures, roleplaying, and a computer game. That amount feeds our artists, writers, editors, coders, and designers while they labor on this unique take on expansionism in the British Empire. New products include core rule books, force books, campaigns, and adventures. A full range of 15mm miniatures and our electronic gaming app round out the product range. For an up-to-date list and descriptions, follow our web site at 1879.fasagames.com.
Seriously though, as FASA’s first original production in over a decade, we really want to make this a game you will want to play for years to come. We want 1879 to immerse you in this new gaming world, providing all of the look, feel, and detail you would expect from a FASA game.
Since 1980, FASA Corporation has consistently created great game lines with all of the supporting products that you have come to expect. Best known for BattleTech and Shadowrun, our game lines include our originals: Earthdawn, Renegade Legion, Crimson Skies, Vor, and Crucible, and our licensed lines: Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Traveller. Along the way there were many other games: Behind Enemy Lines, Top Gun, Battlestar Galactica, Combots and Grav Ball, to name a few.
My name is Ross Babcock and I have been here the whole way. I am going to make sure that 1879 meets the FASA standard. Being one of the creators, designers, writers, developers and having been involved with all of FASA’s games and lines I know what it takes. Our new team includes all of the experienced writers, artists, sculptors, developers, and staff that it takes to do the job.
Our miniatures are being created by the awesome folks at Ral Partha Europe. They already provide us with stunning miniatures for Demonworld, and from the prototypes sculpted so far, Ral Partha’s production quality is still unsurpassed.
Our app team is made up of experienced programmers and computer artists and promising young talent with impressive credits including Starsiege: Tribes, Tribes2, Starwars: Starfighter, Lords of Everquest, Metal Drift, and Touch Pets Cats and Dogs.
The RPG team includes new and familiar faces, and involves artists and game developers who have worked on properties as diverse as Blue Planet, Shaintar, and Champions, through to FASA stalwarts like Earthdawn, Shadowrun, and Renegade Legion.
Yes, we have stretch goals. When we meet our initial funding goal, we have (like any good project) a long list of features that we want to add. They include making Windows and OS X versions of our app, adding new factions to the app collection list, and adding advanced gaming features to the app, including aerial units, vehicles, and fortifications. Obviously, if we're stretching our horizons to include new units, these will extend to the miniatures and roleplaying games as well. We look forward to telling you more about these when we get close to meeting our initial goals!
If you look at the list of rewards (to the right) there are certainly a lot to choose from. We're happy to provide these to say "thank you" to everyone willing to support us and our new project. Have a read and see if any of them tickle your fancy. We have provided different rewards to cater to your desires, whether you are a wargamer, a roleplayer, both, or are just looking for a new game for your iPad. Check out 1879.fasagames.com for all of the details. We have included shipping, including international, in all reward amounts. So, if you want to bump up your pledge, take advantage of the next reward tier, instead of worrying about how much it's going to cost to get hold of your shiny new miniatures and game books.
Everyone who has pledged $5 or more will have their names listed as Kickstarter backers in the initial print and app products. App users will have a Kickstarter backer icon attached to their screen name as a special thank you.
If you pledge $10 or more, you are eligible for the following bonus rewards as we meet our goals:
First Stretch Goal $400,000: all backers at $10 or more will also receive a 22" x 33" folded color game line poster.
We will add more here as we get closer to our initial target and stretch goals.
If your pledge does not include the 1879 App and you would like a copy, just add $10 to your pledge and we will make sure that you receive it.
As you can appreciate, this is a comprehensive game line, covering wargaming, roleplaying, and computer gaming. The video covers just the bare minimum. Visit us at 1879.fasagames.com for examples of play (both miniatures and RPG), sample artwork, application updates, progress reports, developer blogs, and more.
Have a question for us? Please add a comment on our project here with your question or send us a message and we'll be happy to get you an answer! The most frequently asked questions & answers will be collected here once you've asked some, so ask away!
Once again, I want to thank all of you who have gone through our project and have decided to become a backer. Thanks to all of the fans and followers of FASA through the years. I know we will not disappoint you with 1879. For those of you new to FASA, you will discover great games with elegant play, brilliant visuals, and unmatched depth. Please tell your friends and fellow gamers about us and our project and look here for updates and more information throughout our Kickstarter campaign.
Risks and challenges
All projects carry risk, whether building a tall building, making a movie, or any other complicated endeavor. Projects can run out of time and/or money, people may leave, assumptions made at the beginning may turn out to be incorrect or the results may simply not be as good as expected. Games development is no different in this regard.
While much has already been done to validate our assumptions wherever possible (you can see our prototype iPad game in the video above), there is always the possibility of something unexpected cropping up. Games take time to create and we don't always know which challenges are going to the most time consuming. Our project managers and software developers have taken this into consideration, but there is always the risk it may not be enough. We will deliver a game and we have years worth of future features in the planning pipeline so, with your help on this first piece, the game you get should continue to get better and better with time.
"Feature creep" is always a danger in software development where the team fails to resist the lure of neat new features, however our seasoned software developers and project managers are adept at resisting this trap and we believe this risk to be well managed by our processes and experience.
The RPG and Miniature games are well underway and in the video you've also seen the results of initial sculpting and castings for the 1879 miniatures. As with the App, we will deliver the game and miniatures and we have years' worth of additional figures and products in the planning pipeline. Barring the unexpected we feel confident we can deliver the basic games and starter armies as scheduled.
We believe our target funding goal is sufficient to complete our vision for the products. If you're as excited about this game as we are and help us exceed that goal, we have much more we wish to do in the 1879 world. This is just the first step in an exciting journey!
