SCHOOL FOR ADVENTURERS
High school drama meets fantasy adventure in our fun, whimsical novel series, School for Adventurers! This Kickstarter is for the first two books, THIEF and WARRIOR.
At Eastridge Academy, the realm's best and brightest learn fighting, magic, and even thieving--in short, all of the skills needed to become a great hero.
And even the best heroes start somewhere... Or at least that's what the Eastridge first-years like to tell themselves...
STRETCH GOALS AND BONUSES
And just in case we hit $12,000...
If we hit $11,000...
Together, these four will learn how to work together, how to fight, and how to survive... Especially when the closeness of war threatens their kingdom.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
SCHOOL FOR ADVENTURERS (SFA) is a passion project by Kara Loo and Jennifer Young. We've been working on this novel for the last seven years. We wanted to write something that combined two of our favorite genres: high school and fantasy. We also wanted to write a novel that would have positive role models, strong female characters, and a clean, exciting adventure that people of all ages could enjoy. We have a sample of the novel available on our website here.
SFA will be a series of four books. We are running this Kickstarter campaign for the first two books in the series.
The first book, THIEF, has had a long journey. Similar to Kelly Thompson's story (which incidentally inspired us to run this Kickstarter campaign), we've gone through several different drafts--we even self-published the novel a few years ago when we thought we were done with it. But, after that, we were accepted by a wonderful agent who helped us further refine the story in a new draft. That manuscript came close to selling at some impressively big publishing houses, but didn't quite make it. Our novel is written as young adult fantasy, but people felt the multiple perspectives would be too confusing for younger readers. When we scaled back the narrative to just tell one character's story, it didn't quite work. So now we're hoping to take a chance that people are willing to follow our multiple perspectives (hopefully, Game of Thrones has paved the way...) and prove that there is a place and an audience for THIEF.
The second book, WARRIOR, is half written. If we get the funding that we need, we would aim to finish editing THIEF by Christmas and to complete WARRIOR by March 2013.
Kickstarter funding would go towards the printing of physical copies, cover and character art, ISBNs, taxes, shipping, and other expenses related to the costs of editing, publication, and marketing both novels.
So who is this book for? It's for:
Fans of Fantasy
Fans of action and adventure
Fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and 50 Shades of Grey (just kidding on that last one)
Fans of comic books and manga
Fans of stories with strong female leads
We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone in advance for visiting our page and supporting our project!

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
We are two girls who love writing and do it every day. We've been writing together for the last thirteen years--since we were both freshmen in high school. We stayed in touch through our love of writing even though we were separated by rival colleges: Kara went off to Stanford for Creative Writing and Film Studies and Jennifer went to UC Berkeley and the University of San Francisco for her Masters in Teaching.
We've worked together professionally as writers and editors for the past few years on several narrative video games. Titles we've worked on include Electronic Arts' 'Surviving High School', 'Claire Hart: Soul Searcher', 'Cause of Death', and 'Clue: Secrets and Spies'. We also have experience with novels: we were involved in the brainstorming and editing of the novel, Surviving High School by M. Doty, which was recently published by Little, Brown's Poppy imprint.
The beautiful cover and character art throughout the book come from the talented K.M. Ricker.
This is the first Kickstarter campaign we've attempted, and we would HUGELY appreciate feedback. We're unusually excited to hear what we're doing wrong so we can make it better.
REVIEWS FOR SFA
"A compelling and unique take on a fantasy universe... Read it now!"
-M. Doty, Author of Surviving High School
"School For Adventurers is a fun, captivating story written by two talented writers. You'll wish you'd gone to high school at Eastridge Academy, where thieving is homework and even adolescent problems are colored with magic and swordplay." -Steph Cha, Author of the upcoming novel Follow Her Home
"With great wit and humor, SFA is a fantasy that brings the swords and magic while leaving you with characters that have a lasting impression. In short, you come for the swords and magic; you stay for the characters and the humor."
-KM Ricker, Illustrator

Risks and challenges
One of the challenges is going to be sticking to the aggressive timetable of finishing, revising, and readying the books for publication. If the Kickstarter is a success, we'd have less than two months to revise THIEF and three months after that to finish WARRIOR. However, we're confident that we can meet our goals: in our line of work, we're constantly under pressure to write quickly on a weekly deadline. Rest assured, we take these promises very seriously and will hold ourselves to them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
