About this project
(SEE PLEDGES SECTION BELOW FOR US DOLLAR PLEDGE$)
Earthworks is the story of 5 US soldiers who get lost in the fog of No Man's Land on a routine excursion. Unable to find their way back, they find that something unknown is directing them away from their trench. It is a tense and atmospheric psychologicalhorror.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
We need your help so that we can make this movie with the love and care it deserves and for a realistic budget, given that this is a horror picture set in a historical period. We need to build the set inside a studio so that we can control all the elements such as fog, smoke, explosions, rain and mud.
100% of the funds will be used for the film for such budgeted items as locations, studios, equipment, vehicles, sets, food, costume, armory, etc. We already have some great people lined up to work on the film.
PLEDGES & REWARDS
Our pledges start at £1 / $1.67 and go up to £5K/ $8350.
We offer great rewards for every pledge, starting with online contact with the director David Hackl and progressing to signed storyboards, stills and artwork, mini-game apps and interactive scripts and much more.
Donors pledging £50 or more can swap the movie download of a DVD copy of the film.
BONUS DRAW: Pledge £100 /$167 and you can win the £4.5K reward which includes a MOVIE ROLE and a European and US trip!
BONUS DRAW: Pledge £150 /$251 and you can win the £5K 'BUDDING Director Package' reward, spend a week in Croatia with Earthworks & go to a NYC or LA premiere! Full reward details below.
One hundred years ago, thousands of young men headed to fight in the brutal Western Front of WW1. Undoubtedly brave, many of the men were not aware of what was really happening in the trenches and battlefields and many returned home shell-shocked by their experiences.
Many recruits had little training and unrealistic expectations, and their goodwill was not enough to carry them through, especially through the horrific consequences of chemical gas attacks.
Some found inner mettle and proved heroic beyond even their own expectations, but the horror and brutality of the war was oft-repeated by the veterans who survived it.
EARTHWORKS MOOD BOARD
It is a tense and atmospheric horror/ psychological thriller.
We will be using very controlled and traditional film-making techniques and as such, the film will be more like The Shining or The Others set in the trenches of World War 1.

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is the the organisation of a period genre film. Having a good creative leader is key. A cohesive vision and clear communication is the best tool a director brings with him and is key for overcoming creative obstacles. Fortunately, David's combined background as a production designer an director gives him the edge here.
We have highly experienced people who are renowned for the planning, budgeting and organisation of films. This will ensure that we get the most out of the time, talent and money we have.
Our production will also be bonded to ensure that the film will definitely be completed, come what may.
The key to dealing with all risks and challenges in film-making is planning, planning and planning. We have spent a long time developing the film and planning the production and have explored every option in detail and the production will be overseen with the same control and diligence.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Kickstarter only lets us post UK projects in Pounds so we have converted the pledge amounts for you, using www.xe.com.

David has directed indie features and has no studio or distribution deal set-up so he relies on producers to raise the funds. The producers of Earthworks are indie producers and do not have the funds to finance the movie themselves. Like most indie producers we spend a lot of time finding funds and for horror films it is trickier because there are so many 'one-room, minimal cast and budget' kind of movies that are well made and cheap and they drive the cost of horror movies down. We think this is generally a good thing as it brings more indie filmmakers into production. However, because our film is a period film and is set in an external environment with fog, rain, wind and explosions, we need a complex set build and production design to make it look authentic and to control the elements which enables us to create a gut-wrenchingly tense atmosphere. Take another look at the video to see how the trenches are to be built.
Your money will be spent on the budgeted items needed for the film except for legal fees, finance charges and bonding fees. We will show you exactly where and how your money will be spent in the One-Off-Podcast Reward. For those of you who don't have this reward, we will post photos and testimonials on this page.
The films finances are controlled by a Line Producer who is responsible for bringing the film in on budget, and he reports to a bond company via daily reports. The financial control via the Line Producer is an essential and protective element of the production
Our production will be bonded so that if anything goes wrong while we start, the bond company will pay to complete the film. This is unusual though as most problems can be solved, barring fire and earthquake! This film will get made.
Yes, you will get 2 credits: a Thank-You credit in the end-roll of credits and one as an extra, also in the end-roll of credits.
You will need to do a bit of paperwork to declare that you are undertaking the role as part of this pledge and we will need a release form signed by you, in order for you to be included in the film. We will provide the paperwork prior to production. You commit to co-operating in the signing of this paperwork in undertaking this pledge.
Most of the rewards are created as part of the prep and production of the film, so they cannot be shown here. We have shown illustrative storyboards and concept art in this page and in the Updates section. We have shown 3 simple versions of the t-shirts, but additional designs will be uploaded here as part of bonus rewards.
Yes, Shaheen Schleifer has produced various shorts and a UK feature film called Showreel and is currently producing 3 films, including Late Position starring Emmy/SAG/BAFTA winning actress Dame Eileen Atkins who stars in Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight. Roger Trett is an executive fundraiser and is doing that on 2 UK films. There will also be an experienced Line Producer on the film who will control the finance. He will be overseen by the producers and the bond company.
Earthworks can be seen on imdbpro. As we are not fully financed, we can only be listed as 'in development', therefore, we only appear on the pro site. We are happy to send you a screenshot if you don't have imdbpro membership.
We will reduce the money we take from elsewhere and use the full funds for the film. We have some stretch goals but if we exceed £150,000 over our target, we would ask our donors to nominate Kickstarter projects to receive the extra funds as donations.
