Vox Pop DC Records Its Debut Album: Mandate
So, why make this album? And why contribute to making this album possible?
The first question has an easy answer. Vox Pop DC is making an album because we have something to say, something to give, to a cappella: our sound, our joy, and our love for this art form and each other.
To answer the second question, however, we need to tell you a story. Our story.
A couple of years ago, Vox Pop was a bunch of people who liked singing contemporary a cappella together (mostly in the living rooms of members’ apartments). At some point, though, that stopped being enough.
We grew restless, dissatisfied with being just another group singing a mishmash of old college arrangements and longing for the glory days. Trouble was, we had nothing in common. Nothing.
Each of us led a different life outside of rehearsal, lives that didn’t intersect. We didn’t even like the same kind of music. And this separateness was reflected in the group itself – we had no group culture, no vision for our sound or the music we wanted to make. We were ten singers, not a singing group. What were we doing? Why even try?
Matters came to a head one day, as existential crises tend to do. What we discovered, much to our surprise, was that our disparate experiences and tastes didn’t drain our strength. Our diversity was the source of our strength. Each separate life that we lived proved that we were united in the only thing that mattered.
Even our group’s name – short for vox populi – spoke to a feeling of unified diversity that, over time, grew to define the songs we were arranging and the music we were making. It was time to embrace the voice of the people. And high time to rock some faces off.
In essence, our debut album – Mandate – will tell our story with original arrangements of songs that span a wide range of contemporary music. Your generous support will help us bring this music to life. We can’t wait to share it with you.
Thank you so much.
